Zangief Q&A Thread

Thanks bro. My game just went up a notch. Now I believe I have legitimate pressure.

This sounds sarcastic as fuck lol.

I want to play @Evansgambit . What is your cfn?

As I know gief has no option to catch their backdash after LPSPD.
Backdash escape everything including 720CA

If you KNOW they will backdash, do a double dash forward. Can be risky, but it helps against Nash who will backdash 95% of the time.

lol. I kid you not! I actually didn’t know EX SPD shifted the hurt box back.

I always thought villain had advantage from checking with medium pokes after LP SPD - Dash. But if EX SPD can relieve some pressure, and mitigate their advantage. Then it’s a strong position, because you can threaten them to take an evasive option.

I wish I could check it out, Ryu’s wake up crouch MP against LP SPD - Dash - EX SPD, but computer is in storage for 2 weeks.

I would love to play you too. But I suck donkey balls at the game, at the moment. But on the flip side, every Gief is Beefier than me right now  And a mirror match would only prove, which one of us is stronger in the Zangef VS Zangief match up. Plus as @Carter would have you point out, I lose to transalantic internet lag  I’m in Melbourne, Australia.

With all of your poker and gambling references I would have sworn you lived in Las Vegas.

So I havn’t played properly for a few months - picked it back up yesterday.
1 Question:
Is Zangief dead?

He’s the worst character in the game by far imo but some of us are still trying. He’s not dead but it’s always a struggle.

Macho Man Gief makes all the struggles worth it. Don’t look so down, comrades.

Is Vskill against projectiles worth it? A chip fireball does around 8-10 damage, but if you absorb 1 or 2 and get an unlucky trade it’s all gone …

V-skill is worth it for gaining v-meter and avoiding the push-back. Just don’t absorb consecutive fireballs.

Nope. Not intentionally.

You have to factor in the 3 second, 180 frame cool down period to regenerate your grey life.

Absorbing ONE fireball from fullscreen as you make your approach, would be alright.

But you want to prescribe to the general principle of V-Skill followed by immediate payback, to reduce the risk of bad debts. =)

I know it’s a huge gamble but what about using white life as a way to make the opponent come to you? Basically to make them greedy for that damage…?

Of course your anti airs should be consistent (but they should be anyway, right?)

Your should be trying to move them to the corner for the BOURNE ULTIMATUM.

If you carry too much white life, you give them exceptional good odds on the pay off of any exchange. In a game like SFV, why would you want to do that? Why negatively reduce your risk/reward ratio.

Forget about them jumping, against anyone who knows how to play the game, you’ll lose your white life at the mid-range against their faster walk speed, faster dash, offense vs defense counter pokes.

If you carry white life baggage, you pay more than a Zangief who doesn’t on a failed counter poke exchange. This is the inherent problem of stacking V-Skill onto V-Skill onto V-Skill. The white life doesn’t regenerate fast enough, that you have to play carefully and cautiously to recover that life.

You need to make a read with the V-Skill for immediate damage or the frame advantage for an immediate mix up.

Why is Zangief so fucking slow?
I feel like a snail surrounded by squirrels.

People dash back and forth nonstop while I walk two steps forward…

Well at least we have gh to cover some ground quickly…oh wait smh.

Yeah ok, I give up. I just CANT get used to the underwater playstyle caused by this delay.

I just straight up walked into 4 fireballs in a row trying to walk block against a ryu player… I was so furious after that I could barely end the match, quit the game and deleted it from my ps4.

I will continue to follow the game (and forums) because I actually like to watch it but I just cant play it as it is right now.

Are any of gief’s SPD’S invincible?

Specifically, can he be meatied out of them?

None of his spd’s are hit invincible; only EX SPD is throw invincible from frame 1 and EX Running Bear Grab/st,hp armor doesn’t start until frame 3.
However, V-skill armor starts on frame 1 but being hit during the first 2-3 frames increases the time before he can flex. This is really the only thing you need to worry about if you’re using meaties vs a Zangief, and only if it’s an attack with a lot of recovery.
