Mesenk, what did you think of our mirros, besides the fact that I’m old and slow?
EXRBG seems pretty free if you see someone winding up for st HP. IMO it was the only thing I did that was legit and caught you off guard lol.

Hi rich. I’m very susceptible to RBG in this mirror match since I rarely use it the move catches me completely offguard!
I’m going to look at the replays of the mirror match because I can’t quite remember how that all went down but I can give some insight into the Ryu matches. I thought you did very well when I was zoning you. You were only a move or two away from winning those matches (maybe a missed headbutt of a fireball that made you take extra damage too). The issue was when I rushed down I could sense…maybe panic. You were much more comfortable playing without Ryu in your face. This is really a matter of just better blocking and finding a way to create spacing again. I’d suggest using more v-reversal to deal with the pressure and to be cognizant of controlling the space in front of you. I really need to go back and watch the replays because I can’t remember anything else right now. I’ll come back and edit this.
OK I watched all of the ZvZ matches and the most glaring issue was when I knocked you down I was able to meaty headbutt hit you several times when you woke up. On my wakeup though, there was no meaty attacks coming my way. Since I was aware going into the match that you like to fish for air spd I was able to jab you out of it. Other players will catch on to that too. The anti-airs were ok but there were a lot of missed opportunities. I like to jump and can easily be hit with cr.hp or lariat. Lack of V-reversal is a big problem, especially for a character like Gief that can’t deal with people in his face. Once you get used to using that you’ll see how great of a tool it is in your game.
And also remember this https://youtu.be/X5CPf5R-yxg
V trigger always beats ryu super every time regardless of being point blank. Just have to mash the hell out of v trigger buttons on that super freeze screen.
Dude, I cannot thank you enough for the feedback and for taking the time to play some sets with me. The meaty was a pain in my ass, because I very rarely deal with wakeup meaties at my rank. I kept trying to cr. jab them, thinking it always beats everyhting, and then you would light me up, lol.
My only options there are: Block, V-reversal, and wakeup CA? Please correct me if I am wrong. Can I v-skill it or is it too fast?
I think the biggest flaw in my meaty game is the fact that I am conditioned to always LP my SPD’s so I never get good position afterward. I have to work harder at knowing my ranges instead of always relying on the LP.
I’m also still terrible at following up unexpected CC’s, I leave a lot of damage on the table.
I appreciated what you were doing with Ryu when you would keep jumping in and out rather than just fighting me. If you saw I eventually adapted and started knocking you out of it with st jab, but I was never able to follow up with something brutal. I was also a little sweaty hand and missed some stuff. There was one time I jumped in empty on you and had you lined up for CA and borked the input so badly.
Glad to help. Any time you want some practice I’m down to help you. I have some friends that you’d be competitive against too.
I like to mash wakeup jab too but you’ll just have to figure out when to stop against meaty users and also use the meaty headbutt yourself more often. It is one of our best tools. You’re on the right path, just a few tweaks here and there.
R. Mika just ruins me every time, she has all of Gief’s moves and then much more. I can’t believe they weakened the lariat at the same time that they removed green fist.
Same here. I remember people saying early on that Gief bodies Mika. What the hell are they talking about? Again, these are probably people that never even played Gief smh. I always get them low on life with cr.jabs and they get one irish whip on me and I’m dead. It’s just a joke when she gets you in the corner.
Nash is a tough matchup
Best advice I can give is build up white dmg with vskill to bait nash
My game plan for Mika is that no matter what, I am trying to avoid the f.mp corner whip. Not only does the whip+drop kick+ex press get you put into her corner blender, but it does respectable damage on its own. I like to play this match very defensively, keeping her a bit beyond CR.jab range and ready to anti air if they get impatient and start to jump. Most Mika players REALLY want to hit the whip going so far as to spam that, right? Easier said than done, but don’t let it happen. Anything is better than that corner whip. Eventually they lose their patience (hopefully) not being able to land the whip.
For Nash our strategy of walk forward block works well. Like most characters we want to get him in the corner and keep him there. It is tough to do that admittedly. V skill punishes a lot of his heavy moves like spinning backfist, step HK, moonsault, and sonic scythe. He has nice normals and frame traps and also overheads. Tough matchup for sure that requires patience and lots of blocking.
It is early yet but I played about 40 Alex matchups with very high success. V skill parry blows up his St.Mk and St.HK ground game. He is slow and easy to pressure. His only reversal to be aware of is ex chop, because it has armor and will beat meaty headbutt. I think his super is invincible too, so careful of that on wakeup. His powerbomb is 6 frame startup, he loses a lot to ex SPD in close when you feel a throw mixup coming. His normals are very heavy and slow. Be aware of jumping in against him. His CR.HP is similar to ours but it combos to chop or chop xx super. Again, it is early but I felt this matchup was in our favor.
Alex can outpoke gief so well with s.mk or c.mk
What can we do?
Parry it or jump the St.HK if you get a read on it. Also you can St.hp armor or maybe rbg through it.
Alex’s normals are pretty slow. Learn the range he can do them at, and be ready to parry or just whiff punish them.
Flexing on anyone and everyone is a must, fellas. Can’t stress that enough.
When is the best time to do the flex? I haven’t really implemented that to my game yet, seem its not worth it due to all that white life
Flexing projectiles is great, you get V meter.
Flexing pokes and then cancelling into SPD is great, you gain back a lot of the life during the move.
I have not gotten good at using flex+counter, I just tap it and use like a parry.
Do you guys have specifics when to flex for certain character? It would be nice to see a list of matchups when to use the flex.
The only one i know of is Mika’s dropkick.
You can flex Ken/Laura V-skill, Bison/Vega slides (Dhalsim hard slide), Nash spinning backfist/moonsault/step kick, sweeps, Alex’s st.rh (maybe st.mk), Cammy divekick. Obviously more, but these are the ones I see a lot.
No totally easy answer, but if you’re looking for a general rule flex on heavy attacks and mediums that seem to have a lot of recovery.
I don’t flex that much anymore. It’s just so hard to use effectively and if I have a read I feel s.HP and preemptive s.HKs pose less risk. Judging from Itazan replays he doesn’t seem to really use it much either. Snake Eyes on the other hand goes ham with it but I’m not sure it’s doing him much good, he lost a lot of white life during NCR.
Right now I’m better off without it unless I’m playing a really predictable Nash or something. I’m sure it has a ton of potential though.
I almost never used it either. I’d rather just block. Personally, I think flex sucks at higher levels and is borderline useless.
I’m so salty, how do I fight Nash? Like the match up looks brain dead easy for him goddamn.
Dumb fireball, VT can’t catch, air buttons are insane, good pressure that’s annoyingly safe.
