Zangief Match-Ups Thread

Any outs to Cammy Unblockable or do we auto-lose>

It would be nice if there were separate threads for each character which other character forums have, since eventually there’s going to be a lot of information scattered in this thread which will make it very difficult if there’s a specific character you need help with.

Zangief loses to everyone in this game. He has no good match ups. I’m done.

He’s the only character that relies heavily on reads. You need to guess pretty much everything.

Yes his moves are safe, but if you keep blocking and slowly walk/v-skill/headbutt to him he can’t do much to you. He will try to moonsault you but your HP beats moonsault. Blocking also beats his frame trap, if you attack and got hit by his frame trap, he will kick you back to the other end of the screen, so don’t do it. Just block everything and pay attention to his throw. Since you are blocking all his attacks, he would try to throw you.

I’ve tested this stratagem on several silver-gold players and it seems working OK. It’s still a tough fight but I got better chance.

I feel zangief is much better in set play because of this. First to one is so difficult due to the lack of information. Sadly most people’s opinions are based off ranked matches.

So… Birdie’s banana…

Any advice? Birdie can keep out Gief oh so easily it’s kind of sad. Not to mention he has easy ways of building massive amounts of (v) metre while sitting behind his banana.

you can crouch block it, v-skill it, if you see he likes doing chain a lot then you can ex running bear grab to absorb both hits and grab him (this is iffy) , if you empty jump and land on the banana you will block it and not slip. All of this applies to the can as well.

I generally prefer to just armour that one.

Any Idea how to approach the Chun MU? I can’t seem to get close enough to do any damage as all her buttons seem to beat Giefs ranged ones. The only time I do well against my buddy is if I make a few hard reads on air SPD but even then its a way uphill climb. Not sure if this matchup is just impossible for Gief or I am doing something wrong.

I’ve come to the conclusion Gief v Chun is 7-3. All her normals bully Gief badly.

Take your pick at the worst mu in the game. Gief-Chun, Gief-Sim, Gief-Nash, even Gief-Birdie is terrible imo. I don’t think he wins a single mu.

I’ve found that people that rush me down give me far more trouble than those that try to keep me away with footsies or zoning. Just gotta accect the fact that you’ll have to be really good at blocking and teching throws at a higher level of play. I’ve also found that a good and aggressive Necalli is frightening. Gief really got his balls chopped off this version. But I still love the dude, so I’ll keep on keeping on. Don’t give up on him guys.

Absolutely. The range we want to be in is about CR.jab or jab SPD range where we can stick out St.HK or St.HP. I love St.Mk in the corner too. After getting rushed down and blown up I became more aware of the spacing issue and how great a tool V reversal is. Against good players V trigger is pretty hard to hit on them so I’m opting for V reversal and if I happen to gain enough for trigger then so be it. I’d rather have that meter for reversal and keep the spacing in my favor.

Once you get close to them you have to play a reverse zoning game of sorts. Luckily crouching and standing jab are fantastic for keeping people in the place you want.

I watched stupendous play at wnf last week (unfortunately an overlooked player due to snakes prescence there. He embraces the yomi aspect of gief alot more, so while he has moments of harsh inconsistency, he can produce some amazing plays) and he was landing v trigger quite consistently by fishing with st.fp with no charge up.

It actually works quite well in alot of matchups to suddenly throw out the faster version of his haymaker and converting it into a v trigger combo

Does he play online? If so would be nice to check out his CFN and replays.

I honestly like the threat of being able to combo into V-Trigger. Also, having Super stocked while in V-Trigger makes people really hesitant to approach recklessly. Just suck them in and cancel into Super. Scary tactic.

uncharged standing fierce punch from distance is an awesome poke. If you space properly no one can punish. People with long sweeps can beat it but standing mk beats that most of the time. i got so many random crush counters yesterday with that.
It puts a hurt on Alex.
I am feeling like Gief, while the worst in the game, really isnt that bad. ill try to upload some videos soon showing this in action.

Agreed filldoh. My friends rave about how great Gief is, because I kick their asses with him only, but he is clearly not very good compared to other characters. That being said I think he’s fine but requires solid Street Fighter fundamentals (spacing, footsie, knowledge of frame data) and patience. I feel that we are winning with having one special in SPD/air SPD since rbg and lariat are so bad.
