Zangief General Thread: Our Russian Skies Are Protected

We need people who wake up with buttons so I can keep getting my meaty crush counters  But seriously, just wake up and block or try a V Reversal, if you can’t do that you’re likely in for some tough times

Nothing better than headbutt counter five times in a row on wakeup because the guy won’t stop mashing.

Ok this might be common knowledge but for air spd I think I found an easier way that won’t mess up your st. spd timing, and let you get really low.

I used to do a standard spd and then delay the button press to get the air. This was inconsistent now I start at up forward and go to back.

Here is the calculator method for people that don’t know the old terminology think of the stick like a number pad
789
456
123
So in numbers it would be 963214punch if facing right and 741236p if facing left.

Uh-oh, people are starting to catch up. They… they’ve read the FRAME DATA. No more free 50/50 from V-trigger. Don’t push the buttons :frowning:

Yea you can hold it if they block and the pushback keeps you safe, bad part is it uses most of the vtrigger

Do we understand the difference between light/medium/heavy air spd yet besides the damage? Startup is the same across the board. Must be an issue of range right? I have been using exclusively HP because I hadn’t thought of this yet. What do you guys think?

It’s definitely range. I tested this a bit in training mode. Light goes so far it looks like they teleport right into Gief’s arms.

Perfect thought so. HP version gets stuffed a lot when they press a button early in their jump. Thanks!

Yep. lp version has incredible suction power. This is a great tool.

Surprisingly it does work. It’s on the front page of eventhubs. Very situational but still cool.

Here is the link

I made top 16 at the tournament, but, it’s back to the drawing board big time for me personally in making gief work.

I got bodied by a vega that had all the ranges down and had good pressure, and then I lost to a bison.

Outside of that, I got to play around with some ppl in casuals and at least two things I’ve realized:

1.Fang isn’t really free against zangief. I met a friend who’s basically put the pieces together and made top 8 with the character and his setups/pressure is actually REALLY good. We shouldn’t sleep on this matchup at all

 1. FUCK DHALSIM. Playing against a good sim (also made top 8) in a long set made me see how agonizing this matchup is. If sim plays straight runaway, it’s whatever, we know that song and dance, but a competent sim applying all of his defensive and offensive options (setups, pressure) is the worst. It wasn’t terrible, since it’s not like I went in knowing how to handle all of the mixups and ranges, but still, I can tell this is the matchup a Gief will dread the most in tournament.

I just lost like 5 matches vs yolo, DP mash or cammy random piledrivers.
So frustrating, but I know the char was not the problem here. I need to train, block and don’t push so many buttons. Also on real combat on “panic” situations 360 are a pita.

Was thinking to switch to Birdie, but he seems gimmicky.

I actually love the Gief’s patient approach which is required, reminds me of Guile, though the archetype is vastly different.

Gief takes serious skill and patience to win with at higher levels. On the other hand I’m convinced that Cammy, Ken, Bison, and Rashid take NO skill at all to win with.

I just leave this list here, do with it what you want.
[] 600 Stun Air Headbutt
[
] Atomic Suplex
[] f.Jump HP
[
] Banishing Flat
[] EX-Banishing Flat
[
] Final Atomic Buster
[] Sibirian Blizzard
[
] Quick Double Lariat
I wish we had atomic suplex, the others I’m happy trading for our new v skill/trigger game, air spd, and charge s.HP.

…lariat hitting crouching would be nice too.

Does a reaction air spd seem feasible? I’m trying to completely kill my reliance on lariat as an AA, while at the same time, I want solid damage from being able to AA. Getting a reset with st.lp is definitely useful, but , you know, should gief really have to guess after being on point with defending his space for something that’s not guaranteed while the opponent basically risks nothing compared to them potentially getting a full jump in combo? Even cr.hp doesn’t seem to balance out the risk/reward enough to legitimately terrify opponents (aka make them stop) like it should. I feel like being able to AA with air SPD could be the answer.

I’m guessing I just need to train myself to react as soon as I see the opponent leave the ground and jump forward into spd.

If lariat aa’ed like it did in 4 and hit crouchers then I’d be happy. I’ve lost so many matches simply cause of one freaking random jump in. You outplay someone the whole time and then you lose because of a lucky jump in which would never have worked in 4. It’s just really aggravating.

Every character in the game has a trigger/skill, you trade it for Ultra and focus attack.
You lost more than you get, hands down.
Lariat is so ass in this game, it’s more than ridiculous.

 1. Give lariat invincible startup frames and let it hit crouchers but make it fair, so if you get punished for whiffed or braindead lariat, you get crush countered like srk.
 2. Give him Atomic Suplex back: LP,MP,HP-version are all the same - Not throwable, 3frames, 180Damage,Range like MP SPD, you are in f.MP range after landing. EX-Version +1 armor, 200Damage.

It still can be used as a decent anti-air. The timing is just different. Snake eyes hits pretty consistently.

watching his stream right now, and he just said that Lariat needs a buff pretty fast and that it is ridiculous that a WRESTLER lose with his grabs against normal throws.

should’ve replied earlier, was honestly surprised. So judging off what I tried and seeing it combo in the video, if you v-reversal a move that makes the enemy move forward (like the kick move thing Karin was doing) then it leaves them in range for super. How many moves hit more than once, are not airborne, and make them go forward though?
