Zangief General Thread: Our Russian Skies Are Protected

wow, you can headbutt fireballs, back to maining gief

hey guys, just having some difficulty in the basic gief gameplan… i am trying to make people respect my strings and frametraps all to eventually work in spd… but at my level (bronze) people are just indiscriminately hitting buttons left and right and trying to reversal every single time. then when i feel like i’ve established my strings i go for an spd tick and BOOM i’m being DP’d or something… i feel like because of this i’m not building damage/momentum like i need to be. how can i make people not hit buttons? is vskill the answer here?

Well as of now I’ve already found that st.hk as a meaty is really good atm. If you use it as a meaty against quickrise after ex spd/fierce spd it won’t whiff on crouchers and when it’s spaced to where giefs boot is what’s touching the opponent as they get up, you’re left in a pretty advantageous situation since instead of -2, you’re now at even frame advantage due to hitting with the last few active frames of hk. At this distance, whatever button they might press after blocking the meaty st.hk aside from doing an invincible reversal will lose to lp spd and ex spd due to the positioning

If they didn’t block and got hit, at worst, you didn’t get a cc and are +3 in the same situation as above and same distance

At best, you got a cc and can go for one of the followups (meterless, ex spd, vtrigger).

Im posting this as I discover it though, so I encourage someone to double check on this stuff in case it’s shit. I’ve only tested this with ryu.

My god, is his ex air SPD stupid good. I’ve grabbed people from what looks like further than a grounded jab spd range like a vacuum rofl

Vskill can catch whiffs. Against reversal dp, try to bait it out, and punish with st. Hp cc>f. Hp.>St. Lk>lariat or st.hp cc>spd. Sweeps are punishable as well but not as hard. I like punish them with cr. Mk> ex rbg/l. Rbg.

After establish that you won’t spd every chance you get they are forced to respect you, which will lead to free spds.

A lot of bronze level play is decided by who punishes better as players are making tons of mistakes.

Tl;Dr. Bait>punish. Training your opponents is fun.

Man… I really want a hitbox viewer in the game.

I’m carefully waiting for that one guy to make the hitbox viewer available as a mod for the PC version.

I am getting the same thing. I lose games to mashing lowe rank players cause everything beats gief speed or priority wise. How does ryu RH sweep always punish a low forward? Then people have target combos they can just mash when you go for spd, so you lose 30%.

F.MK - If it hits on the last active frame, you get st.LK xx lariat. You also get this if it counterhits and you can do it off of knockdowns from certain lariat combos. I do it off of cr.LP, st.LK xx Lariat and jump in whatever, st.LK xx Lariat. You can still do meaty F.HP from these combos (which is good if you have super), but you’ll be too far to get a lariat combo.

cr.LP, st.LK - Easy to hit confirm into lariat or super if you have the meter. cr.LP is +3 so once they’re afraid of the hit confirm and start blocking, you can tick into SPD. I haven’t tested but this should beat most V-Reversals as well. You only get the combo off of close or CC sweep

st.FP - Obviously it’s good because it can CC, but it’s also the only thing you can really get off of a back recovery midscreen, however that’s only if they decide to press a button when they get up. Not likely, but it’s an option I guess. This meaty works a lot better in the corner, since there’s nowhere to back recover and a st.FP CC is almost always going to yield a jab SPD or st.HK at the worst. You can still get this meaty off of HP/EX SPD, air SPD and bear grab since those can’t be back recovered.

lots of great discussion here and i’ve improved tons just by soaking this all in so big ups to y’all.

what does everyone think of this developing notion that gief could be the lowest tier character in SFV?

It’s probably true… he has more unfavourable matchups then anyone else. He gets zoned hard by rashid, sim, fang etc.

What is CC?

Could be. Doesn’t matter overly much imo since tiers are pretty tight in this game (with Chun lording over everyone in S+). As was mentioned earlier in the thread, nothing is unwinnable, and there’s nothing close to an 0-10 matchup.

OK, so I was fiddling in training mode a bit and found pretty easy way to do 720 ouf of lights:
cr. lp > qcf + lk > 2147 + punch

Man, doing super of lights is as easy as doing lp > meats squasher with hugo in sf4.

I went on serious tilt today playing vs nothing but karin, sim and zangief mirrors. At least i got some mu experience but went from 2400 to 1500. RIP me. Not that matters.

Did VT, dude blocked, did walking 720, won. Ragequit. Lol.

Hey guys. Here’s my OS for sim teleport on his wakeup

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYuBMYG1_DQ

you just essentially meaty him on f.mk and then mash vtrigger since it doesnt cancel.

I feel you bro. I popped a salt vein last night and ended up rage quitting like 4 matches. This happened after I had two people rage quit on me and then proceeded to get eaten by flowchart Mikas, plus Rashids who had their stick stuck in the jump motion all match. Currently for me the Rashid matchup is like licking a cactus. It can be done but the patience and finesse has to be real. One slip up and it goes downhill xD

I mained Cody in SF4, so I can’t help but notice the similarities with SF5 gief in the sense that you are a beast while you are standing (epic pokes/anti air). But when that knock down comes… it’s time to become a blocking/reads genius as your wake up option. Obviously I’m still ass, so maybe that’s got a lot to do with it. However dealing with Necalli/Rashid/Mika wakup pressure hella painful.

I think its true. He does not suck necessarily, but if a character has the most worst match-ups in the game, he is probably lowest tier. Add that he is the hardest to use, and the slowest, I mean…eh…

He had tools in ST and 4 to get in, and they are all gone. I mean honestly some match-ups are just a joke. Nash? Fireballs, air over heads, un-punishable flash kicks??? Don’t get me started on Mika…just a faster easier version of zangief with target combos.

Yet gief feels really fun, and a win with him just feels great.

Nash flash kicks can be anti aired by the whole cast with s jab. The move sucks. You have an answer for other things.
Mika is faster but does less damage, fair trade off. As long as Laura and fang are in the game I don’t think grief will ever be the lowest. He is hard to use but I think very good.

yeah your right, but usually you trade hits and take more damage. A standing jab is a very high requirement for something somebody can spam and use space with.
