Zangief General Thread: Our Russian Skies Are Protected

lol super honest…I was soooo churning the butter there hardcore, lol mostly because I have a hard time with those 360 supers in general lol.

side note: Does headbut > crouching MP > lariat work?
seems like it doesn’t even pressing forward.

Congrats on placing 25 on a totally different game in 2013 that’s been out for years, than the current game at hand.

Wonnng said Dudley was S-tier op all because he could combo from his OH and most people agreed with him…but a game riddled with mechanics not favoring him with invincible backdashes, focus, large reversal windows, fadc, ultra comback, invincible srk type moves, free ex escapes…suddenly these things are non existent and are not gonna be problematic for his op shenanigans? Which is why i knew Dudley was not top tier at all in his reveal. And Justin Wong said he was op and he actually wins majors. So yeah, winning locals and placing 25 at some major doesn’t mean much to me.

But go ahead and continue with the Zangief is not bottom of the bunch but it’s also convenient for you to say it’s not true, but unwilling to provide someone below him. Even if the game is the most balance game in the world…someone has to be last. That doesn’t mean he can’t win anything or win a tourney or two…it means he’s clearly lacking and too dependent on hard reads compared to the other 15 characters. I don’t think most characters need an alt character in pocket, but Gief feels like he does despite the game’s “honest” gameplay.

This is really bad logic. If the margin between 1st and last is quite narrow then how is the last ranked character significantly worse than the others? I’m not claiming that the game is a paragon of balance but I don’t see how Gief is significantly worse than other characters.

Instead of disputing anything he said your just going to attack his credibility? Learn how to argue.

Not going to lie I kinda wish the Banana was like KanRa’s swarm in KI where you can clear it by attacking it. It still forces the opponent to be careful around it, but allows you to remove it if the Birdie player isn’t going to defend it.

U can punish it on block with cr.LP, and st.MP if you’re close.
And if u have VT activated + a fully stocked CA, u can punish it with cr.LP xx VT into CA, that’ll discourage them from abusing it

As far as I know, u cannot. Maybe it’s possible to walk a few frames after landing f+HP as a CH, but with how slow Gief’s walkspeed is, I highly doubt it.
f+HP, st.LK xx Lariat however works well, but I’m sure that’s common knowledge by now.

i wasn’t attacking his credibility but merely stating it doesn’t matter who you are, Justin Wong was at the time winning tons of majors and he was very wrong about Dudley. A character looks good on paper doesnt make it so. He has to show results with Gief now. Not with Akuma on USF4 in 2013. I’m sure he is a fine player, but it doesn’t make him any more right. Lets see his play vs LI Joe’s Charlie, vs Combofiends Mika, vs LPNS Birdie, vs Graham Wolfs Vega. so on and son.

He brought his credentials up after you started saying that his tactics only work on scrubs. If you don’t know how to use Gief’s tools that’s your own damn issue but Gief isn’t “the worst” because of that.

lol @ not being good with Gief’s anti airs.

Dude has A JAB anti-air. It’s not 150 points of damage but that sits dude RIGHT THE FUCK DOWN.

Sorry i dont know how to use tools that require my opponents to make the wrong moves to get the most of it, and mostly require hard reads. Oh, my how difficult it must be. Again, if your landing most of it them often they are either scrubs, or people unfamiliar with him… nowhere did i say he was terrible and unwinnable but he was the worst of the bunch. i know you can air grab backdash, easier said than done when people use it sporadically in a high intense match. I have not been grabbed by running bear grabbed this beta? was always a free punish for me. Again, the worse someone plays the better Gief looks. So i’m sticking with him being last because of relying to much on that. If he doesn’t fizzle out and the coming weeks after SFV then i’ll eat crow. I think the salt stems from the fact i call him the worst of the bunch as if everyone is tied for being the best in this game…someone has to be weakest…but it does not necessarily make them weak per se.

I played against Rashid a few times and they were really bad cause when I fought one that knew what he was doing I almost cried. Out of nowhere a spamming Rashid appeared, I guess he had his way with past Zangiefs that way. He destroyed me the first round, I had no idea what to do. You can't even jump towards him, I could not touch him! So I thought really quick to myself "what do I do!?". Then I remembered that his pissed off mode thing (Sorry, this is my first serious go at Street Fighter) can stop any projectile. I just kept pushing forward and doing mp+mk (2+4 in Tekken terms if that's not right) and won. His EX run grab was useful as well. I legit was proud of myself lol. Wish I had recorded it.

It’s actually quite funny you make statements like this

Then turn around and try to say because J-Wong is wrong anyone can be wrong.

Ok then if anyone can be wrong why are you so sure you are right in this case?

Sorry, but no. It doesn’t require stupidity to grab someone’s back dash. If they back dash, you read it, you catch them. There’s nothing that is dependent on ignorance there. There’s nothing special they can to do stop it other than not back dash which means if you predict they are going to sit still you can do a regular SPD.

What do we call that? Oh yeah, a mix up. Now of course it is harder to read a good player, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be done and it doesn’t mean that isn’t a viable option if you get the proper read.

An example of taking advantage of stupidity would be something like me jumping in on a neutral Ryu from a non-ambiguous range. The only way it will work is if he fails to anti-air and most good Ryu will always do so. Thus that’s a gimmick that is reliant on ignorance. That’s why jumping constantly doesn’t work at high levels unless you know the ranges at which it is safe to jump. What we are talking about isn’t even in the same category.

He has tools yes, and the more tools the better. but most of them are reads…and like you said it’s hard to read a good player…that my point is he’s to much about reads and yeah they are devastating but you cant always predict the future or make people do what you want them to. Which is merely me suggesting why hes the bottom of the cast not that hes our right terrible…but his flaws are there compared to everyone else…maybe he’s not the worse…i dont have extensive background on say, cammy, or ken, or bison, or x. but he’s definitely not at the top of the totem pole. But digress, i hope your right. I like gief, i want to see him do well…but maybe it’s grapple syndrome where a character looks/is really strong week 1, then drops lower, then for some reason is strong again.

Am I missing something? Of course you can catch backdashes with air SPD but why would you? If you’re in position to do that, can’t you just do st.FP? Unless I’m missing something it covers more options that air SPD and leads to more damage if you guess right

The range and the speed are good enough to catch the back dash in a lot of situations that HP would be too slow for. If you are directly in someone’s face like after an anti-air reset then you can do whatever to stop the back dash.

Yea, I get what you mean. There’s some times I missed st.FP and probably could’ve caught them with ASPD. TBH tho, I’m not about making reads like that unless its life/death or they’re jumping/backdashing > 80% of the time. Would much rather just let them back themselves to the corner, especially if it’s a char (fuck you Nash) that can’t get out easy.

St.HK is also an option to catch backdash. It’s a lot less risky than EX Air SPD and u can combo from it.
And personally, I’d rather safe my meter for CA.

For the record I think Dudley is pretty OP in 4, although not quite as bad as he was in 3S

This gave me a laugh when I saw it.

I have no fucking clue what to do about that banana, it might as well be a 50ft electrified wall.
