Serious question, what do against Karin and Rashid?
Karin: It feels like they can randomly spam anything they want and Zangief can’t do anything, everything from Karin feels safe.
They always spam brainless and randomly their special moves and I can’t punish with anything except lights… from 20 matches I have 10-12 Karins…
Rashid: This matchup is THE HELL, I don’t know how to do anything against him… His projectile is perfectly designed against Zangief, it’s like a hadoken + anti-air in a single move, his V-trigger mixup is also so strong.
I need my Ibuki to compensate the bad matchups for Zangief.
I’m still really salty that normal throws beat out SPD. I’ve even been thrown out of EX versions. It’s just so weird to have command throws lose to normal ones.
I think good sims are countering this idea already.
Fought a few good sims today. What they do is throw a fireball and follow it up with a limb (usually st.mk). As soon as they figure out I will use my v-skill to absorb both the fireball and the limb and hit them with the flex, they start insta-teleporting behind me as soon as they see gief turn red. The flex does not autocorrect, so I’m treated with a dhalsim combo, on top of lost grey life.
gief is last tier imo. anyone can rush him down, and anyone with zoning tools can zone him out, untill they get bored then rush him down. his grappling “oki” is not scary tbh…even necalli command grab is scarier, bc you have to worry about getting combo’d to death…unlike gief just backdash and you may get jabbed or poked but it leads to nothing due to no combo power and is not big damage. 5 frame grabs looks to pressure and normal grabs, v-trigger is -3. slow as balls…crush counter easily telegraph and don’t lead to much without v-trigger…mega punch = million frames, unarmored to low attacks…yeah not feeling him at all…
i think his headbutt should have crush, lariat should hit crouches…so he can reliably combo into it…
Well yeah if you are trying to absorb both the fireball and the limb that’s a bad idea. That’s not what I am talking about. The thing is to do that he has to set up a lob shot, but if you are close enough to Dash > LP SPD he can’t do that because the fireball has a long start up. Also predicting a limb and jumping it gains you a ton of space. Against Sim you only need to make sure to get the life lead and you can sit on it since Sim’s fireballs are easy to dodge.
I don’t think this is a bad match up, but it is a match up you got to know your options.
Nash on the other hand you can’t really get around the sonic booms without him being able to anti-air you or punish things like V-Skill and when you finally get in on him he warps out to safety. By far Nash seems like the worst match up.
This is exactly my feeling about him, that makes me so sad, because I play Zangief since ST as my main in every game he appeared…He doesn’t feel like Zangief, it is like you remove Hugo’s combos and put him in SF5 with a Zangief skin.
I feel like Rashid is like Leo from GG XRD, Brian Battler from KOF 98 OG or Blanka from SFIV. He’s a scrub/newbie killer with a ton of fun gimmicks but not really that good of a character. A lot of his stuff is not that safe and he has to make some stupid guesses since he has really little comeback potential.
The Nash and Karin match up require the same thing: patience. You have to be on point, punish everything and basically fight a war of attrition, especially against Nash. Study frame data, know what is safe and what is bullshit, especially with these two characters.
Lariat needs a buff imo, it loses to almost everything and does no damage. You can jump in on Zangief for free.
Remember, Nash has piss poor wake up and Zangief actually has probably the nastiest oki game in SFV imo. Use and abuse knockdowns.
Considering half your post was total nonsense. Didn’t need much of a rebuttal.
For instance you do realize air SPD grabs back dashes right? Also running bear grab also can catch them right? Or you have the option in many situations of early forward dash and SPDing right? Back dashing is annoying, but there are ways to stop it that actually deal quite a bit of damage. Getting Air SPDed is an easy 200 and actually leaves you in position to pressure the opponent. Just because you haven’t figured this out doesn’t mean Gief is bad.
Second Gief’s best oki is not off SPD and the reason for that is because you can get SPDs in the neutral game by absorbing an opponent’s button. If you got a ton of free offense from it that would be absolutely stupid. Although the positioning after dashing isn’t bad at all. The moves that give you the best oki are the running grab and air SPD. And actually I would say the best mix up is actually when someone tries to jump at you, dash at you, etc. because when you counter them by c.HP, jab, etc. you reset them into a position where you can cover every last option of theirs. So the “rush gief down” people haven’t figured out that actually getting your throw teched, your dash jabbed, or jump anti-aired is the way to put yourself into the mix up.
Crush counter don’t lead to much? In what world? Off a crush counter you can combo super or SPD for crap tons of damage. In fact if you can get a HP SPD it is even more damaging than f.HP > s.LK > Lariet. In addition you can almost always get the EX SPD for a good amount of damage. And of course if you have V-Trigger you can also unload on him. Again just because you haven’t figured this out doesn’t mean Gief is bad.
And seriously you are complaining V-Trigger is -3? His V-Trigger is easily one of the best in the game and a massive comeback factor. You can whiff punish things with it easily.
Lastly when Gief has super all of his buttons become deadly because you can actually hit confirm into super off a single button. c.MP is excellent for this and you can even get it off buttons like f.MK.
I think Gief has a couple trouble match ups, but against the rest of the cast I think he is excellent.
lol so he can air grab back dashes. just because he can do something doesn’t make it viable. okay he can combo a grab into his crush that is slow and easily baitable. he is free to jump ins, and quick rise. I’m not talking about when he has full meter. but yeah, anyone with full meter is more of a threat, full meter is the only thing that will make him not free to wake up and rushdown. but basically gief is good as long as you make good HARD reads and be super patient. In other words, you opponent has to be bad…usually gief worst matchups were people with strong zoning tools but half the cast has a far range fast strong poke to keep him out, fireballs, and command grabs of their own. Not only that they don’t have to be afraid of rushing him down due to his slow command grab. If you freak out and think he’s SF4 gief then yah you’ll lose. If you play him like SF5 gief, you’ll win. Not to say Gief doesnt have a strong tool or two and can build momentum…IF YOU LET HIM. but he can bullied back just as easily…more so even… The point is… he’s the weakest of the bunch, someone has to be last and clearly it’s him.
cr.LP > st.LK > Lariat hits crouchers when you’re at the right distance…for example, after a cross-up splash.
It’s his BnB.
You definitely can NOT jump in on Gief for free.
Besides the threat of air SPD, stand LP is REALLY good, actually. And, they reset right in front of you at a huge frame disadvantage…that’s pretty much all Gief ever asked for in life. Being right next to someone and having frame advantage = GIEF PARADISE.
