too funny how zangief is one of the worst characters close range, fucked against pressure/throws, still people here who protect capcom or think he is strong?
If I’m not mistaken air ex spd damage has been nerfed quite a bit. Also you cannot lariat when landing V trigger anymore, not a big deal but you could before at least in beta 2.
I don’t play this character anymore, I just destroy all the giefs with buttons/throws and thats it, no respect because he can’t do anything against it with his 598097 frame grabs. and thats all he has, some slow grabs and very bad lariat.
Gief’s st.HP only has upper body armor, so it’ll lose to all low hitting normals and specials. The armor only activates when u hold the punch button and it kicks in at frame 3 or 4.
Against non fireball characters I’ll use his V-Skill randomly in neutral to catch limbs and build meter, u can also combo into Super when u land his V-Skill follow up (when he flexes and hits the opponent).
Once I have my V-gauge fully loaded, I’ll activate VT and and wait for an opportunity to whiff punish with it, or i’ll buffer it with pokes. U can only combo into his Super when pulling them in tho.
And as for the Sim match up, the little “flex” after the V-Skill hits almost all of Sim’s limbs from anywhere within the limb range and the heavier ones if you V-Skill you can always have enough time to hit the limb. You can nickle and dime him for 50 damage to slow down the limbs. Also you can get under the lob fire and SPD him since his hurt box sticks out while he is throwing out the fire.
Also unlike Nash you can actually pin down the bastard. So when you do get in you can go to town.
Couple of matches from the current beta.
The quality of my play is definitely not as good as it was in the previous beta tho. My opponents were stronger this time around, and I was being very impatient and stubborn
Nice matches Ralenzo, I fought many times against those 2 nash players and lost almost all of them. From my experience I think Nash and Birdie are gief hardest MUs, didn’t play against any good dhalsim so I can’t talk about that one.
I need to really get used to AA properly, it’s hard to get rid of the habit of doing crouching lariat against deep jumpins when you have been playing gief in sf4 for so many years. St.jab seems to be the most reliable aa for many situations, even better than C.HP against non crossup attacks.
Everything Sharin said. I’m having a really hard time with AA. What’s the most reliable right now? Lariat’s a crapshoot, crouching fierce takes too long to startup, and gief’s hitbox while standing leaves him quite open with st. jab.
What do you guys think the Gief v Nash matchup is? I think it’s 7-3/8-2 Nash
All Nash has to do is throw a boom to zone gief out all game or have safe offense.
You can’t jump the boom because Gief’s jump is slow, and Lariat will get punished, VT is the only option, you can v-skill but it’s risky because if he keeps throwing booms you get tons of white life.
You can also headbutt booms but that can be punished too
Nash has long normals with fast recovery or hurtboxes that retract all the way back past the whiff punish distance extremely fast
V-Trigger or V-Reversal is a free escape from the corner, which makes you have to do all that hard work again
The only solace is that if you knock down nash, he can’t do anything
Thanks. I’ve lost against a couple of Nash players as well, and they weren’t even good, nowhere near the level of these 2 Nash players.
I think Nash is a hard match for Gief as well, but I also think it’s very winnable. You just need to stay calm and composed, study your opponent their habit while pushing them to the corner and building V-gauge.
The only problem is that you sometimes don’t have enough rounds to make use of your opponent their habits, u might get in by luck once, but that doesn’t mean you’ll get in again.
And yeah, Zangief his AAs require u to be on point. cr.HP and Lariat work well, but they’re just a bit slow.
One of my biggest flaw right now, is that I always delay crouch tech and try to AA neutral jumps with Lariat (like how Gief players do in SFIV), but that doesn’t work at all in this game, and I should really stop doing that.
