From the datamined beta 4 changes:

  • Universal: Backdashes now only throw invincible 1~2F, airborne 3F~. Previously some backdashes were invincible during airborne frames too. This only affects air throws like Gief’s. Otherwise the situation is effectively the same. *

We will be catching backdashes with spds ala usf4 zangief with u2 :slight_smile:

Can you catch a backdash with an Air SPD though?

As long as I can still backdash away from ground throws I don’t care.

I had done it in Beta 3. You can Tiger Knee the SPD low enough to catch some back dashes.

Am I the only one who has a hard time dealing with people that love to dash up press buttons/throw/neutral jump.
I swear that shit is very effective against me.

it’s effective vs all gief, gief only option against that is super…since his grab is unlike SF4 where it’s not a 3frame invincible mash option. people shouldnt be to afrain to press upback on him like it were SF4 really.

I have no problem with having slower buttons and slower grabs, but dashes are just so freaking fast in this game, then there is rollback and my average reaction speed…sigh…
In normal circumstances I’d walk myself out of certain ranges, but Gief’s walkspeed is just so slow. Another option would be throwing out buttons pre-emptively, but I find it such a risk because it opens u up to CHs, especially spaced Sweeps.

If only Gief would get a walkspeed buff in VT like Birdie :stuck_out_tongue:

They nerfed his walkspeed a bit more. that’s so anoying. I actually thought they will buff it slightly.

Cr. jab is good for stopping that since it reaches so far and is fast at 4 frames. And yea, it’s always worked, just have to be already in VT. Doesn’t work on activation.

Do HK’s beat Gief’s st. HP? I feel like when I use it I always get knocked out by sweeps and other Gief’s standing HK but when I try to sweep and HK them during theirs it’s not the case.

I’m also curious how you guys mix up your block pressure. Lights into tick grabs are obvious to me but are things like fwd MK good for mixing it up? On counterhit it gives you a combo assuming you’re close when you do it and it gets you back in on them.

Also I’m curious when you AA someone with cr. HP is that it or is there a followup of some sort? I’ve just been doing that into jump pressure or SPDs mostly.

Lastly, about his v-skill and v-trigger. How do you go about using them in non fireball based matchups? Like how do you use v-trigger in most your matchups when you’re not just punishing projectiles? I feel like I just use it randomly hoping for whiff punishes since it seems like a really bad reversal and AA. As for his v-skill, does the punch at the end of it grant you a combo or good enough frame advantage to do anything?

Also, matchup wise. How have your guys matches gone vs Karin, R. Mika and Rashid? They seem to have great whiff punishing, fast gap closers and lots of multi hitting strings. In particular Karins always do this special that ends low, jumps over you or goes into an overhead I believe. Obviously I need to go into training and look at her frame data but I’m curious what you guys think about this shit too. Rashid also is obnoxious for me to deal with right now, rolling in and out of footsie range, spamming projectiles and doing specials that appear to be unsafe but leave him at a far range where I only seem to get a cr LP off. I actually beat the only Rashid I’ve played so far just by letting him hang himself, not challenging him. Just cr lp every time he tried to roll in, neutral jumping and occasionally ex bear grab to go through obvious ground pokes. I also have similar problems with R.Mika that mostly occur due to lack of frame data knowledge. She does that charged kick thing or some other thing that seems safe and plus and continues with grab or some block pressure.

These are just questions I have after playing Gief for the first time today.

The only match ups I find troublesome are Nash and Birdie. Those seem like match ups you need to learn in detail.
