I think what I’m liking so far about Gief is that he looks very damn buff compared to his SF4 self, which IMO was probably the worst character model in the entire game (like it didn’t even look like a model, it’s like Capcom just slapped some textures on top of each other and smoothed them out later)
SF5’s Gief actually kinda reminds me of the Alpha 3 model
As someone who has mained Zangief for a long time, I must agree. Alex needs light, and should, or WILL be in the initial roster. I wouldn’t mind if Alex were in Zangief’s slot. He will come as DLC, or in season 2. I am quite sure, reasons below.
If I recall correctly, CAPCOM stated that they found the season thing interesting, and they also did test how well it would work to add characters to the game in the way that they did.
Now, why would they do such a test if it only were for a few characters? To me, it seems unnecessary if all of the hassle were for 4 characters or so.
I am absolutely convinced that CAPCOM did not go through such a thing for the sake of 4 characters as DLC.
I suspect that since they are so greatly wished for (Urien, Alex), CAPCOM will simply add them in later seasons. Why? Cause Bison Dolla.
They know, and they will have us pay for what we want.
(Apologies for semi-off topic.)
I dont mind the fact it’s changed, it’s just that its so plain and boring.
that spinning lariat thing is pretty much derp city, i dont think i can remember a move looking so stupid
I honestly think all this “We want Alex”-crap is a very vocal minority.
I bet 99% of the people buying this game, don’t even know who Alex is.
Show the same dudes a picture of Ryu or Gief though and they’re like “Yeah this karate and bear wrestling dude!”
If history is any indication, RIP the grappler archetype, forever restricted to the bottom of the tier lists.
Of course, the real questions that matter are still in the air: Is SPD still 360 (read: 225) or will it be half circle this time? Are they going to pull out the “since his input is now easier, we had to compensate with lower startup and worse range” excuse to kept him nerfed? Is Iron Body the nickname for parry? I get close to the opponent, why would I risk my position parrying or countering his attacks instead of just grab him ASAP? Why would I need an extra move to disperse fireballs when I can already parry them?
Breakdown of the trailer. Well, I’ve got some questions here and here, you could help me with that.
[list=1]
[] “My iron body is invincible, so beware”
[] CC Heavy Kick (launcher) > Lariat (Quick Lariat ?). I wonder if we can low profile his Heavy Kick, just by crouching with a little character like Karin or Cammy (I don’t think that could be the case)
[] T Bone Powerslam, just his regular back throw. Let the opponent at his feet
[] Impact Punch. Certainly a command move (6 or 4 HP maybe). Could be a regular HP though. Armor, chargeable, knockdown on hit (don’t know the change on block and without charge). No wallbounce like Hulk in Marvel.
[] Atomic Drop, his regular throw. Looks like the range is enormous (compare to the other grab).
[] CC Crouching Heavy Punch > Ex Air Grab. That normal’s animation reminds me of something but I can’t put the finger on it. For the grab, I wonder if his regular spinning piledriver could be done in the air, the startup animation looks the same (but Bison and Gief are in a different position at the end of the grab). Oh, and I don’t think we could do that combo in another way. I mean, he CC an jumping opponent then combo into air grab, that seems crazy to me to think that he could do that without the opponent in a jumping state.
[] CC Impact Punch > Ex Running Bear Grab
[] Grizzly Heabutt. Looks like Birdie’s Bull Head. Can destroy projectile (mono hit), Gief don’t move forward (his hitbox extend horizontally but he stays where he is). Command move I guess.
[] Raspoutine Special, his V reversal. Works like Chun-Li’s one.
[] Iron Muscle > Iron Muscle > Iron Muscle > Regular Spinning Powerbomb. I may be wrong but I think he used three times in a row his V skill (I don’t think that works like a red focus)
[] Red Cyclone V Trigger. A mix between Rashid’s Mixer (hold the button for more hits) and Ryu’s Ex Tatsumaki (for the vacuum effect). Anti projectile.
[] Suplex City Bitch CA. A CA grab. Just a german suplex but we can see that he exerces enough force to break the ground after the initial impact.

We can see his sweep, his Standing Medium Punch and parts of his regular grab in the facebook gallery.
Yeah, Green Hand has always been weird. It is a good move, but it is odd to do a SPD and immediately follow with Green Hand to cut the distance. Let’s hope Zangief’s dash is better than in 4.
Wonder if Gief has crouch grabs again. Maybe they can still be just tech standing.
As if anyone had played lame tier Gief during SF2 either. Gief players were as rare a sight as Dhalsim ones in the casual circles.
I bet then 99 % of the people that wanted Zangief don’t play him, can’t even get a strict 360 input right and when they are on the opposite side of a command grab, they start complaining “Can’t block, that is so OP!” and then they join to the chorus of “when grapplers are good, the game becomes miserable”.
Of course, Snake Eyez and the Gief players are already used to be doormats when it comes to the balance updates, ready to shrug, lose and say that they the odds weren’t in their favor to start up with to console themselves.
