Zangief General Thread: Our Russian Skies Are Protected

Gief match from the Dhalsim build here:

Got a video testing some Gief stuff as well. Expect that soon.

thanks man!

Some Gief testing and a good estimate on the damage he can dish out (it’s a lot if the Ryu video didn’t give that away):

So zangief now has 3 bars

Reminding me of Karin’s V Trigger now too. They must have changed something or know something we don’t about his V Trigger if they upped it to 3 bars. Very interesting.

Capcom just halved the dmg of his air grab and now he needs 3 bars to get his goofy trigger. hahahahaha good job crapcom.

Lolzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Fuck Capcom, the damage of his air EXSPD looks like almostly halfed
However, the grab range & damage of his heavy regular SPD looks like buffed (not sure, just seems to be)
Is it a buff for having 3 v-bars now?

He just needs one more bar to get is v-trigger but it is still very limited like before, you can use it 1time on hit or 2,3 times on block and thats it. The air grab nerf ruins everything even more.
I hate capcom more and more for this. people say his ex spd is very slow now, slower than his regular spds.

when a guy like Snake Eyez says “I go with Birdie, Zangief feels not like Zangief” and Hagejin says “He is pretty much the worst character in this game, I really don’t like Zangief in SFV”…then it’s just sad in every fucking way.
but hey, wanna be pros say he looks good and “interesting” let’s believe everything they say, they have probably more idea than 2 of the 3 Zangief gods.

Fam, fam, it will be fine. 4 months until the game drops and they’re still balancing everything relative to the other characters. It ain’t over until you hit him with the Ultra 1, we all know this.

It’s easy to parrot top players who are very finnicky and end up changing their minds on twitter like a month later. Not gonna fall for that. Just gonna stick to my own evaluations and see what other people come up with. This is a new game so Hagejin, Cantona and Snake Eyes aren’t going to be the only top level Gief players and this new Gief may open up opportunities for someone else to take over as the new IT Gief player. The best Ken players in 3S aren’t the best Ken players in IV and won’t exactly be the best in V etc.

New game, new engine, new opportunities for new players to be the top Gief players.

Must be strange be a TP in that situation.
One side you got Capcom inviting you at events asking to be “positive/nice” on the other side you MUST whine a lil bit to get teh buffs

Strange politic

Btw can’t see videos on phone , anybody confirm spd dmg got buffed?

also already miss atomic suplex :frowning:

Heavy SPD looks like it does more damage. The problem is Gief is doing the SPD on Chun who has among the lowest health in the game. Not sure if it’s actually doing more damage or if its just Chun Li being lower health.

I dunno I like the call that the whole “sky is falling” effect. Even if your character isn’t that bad, if you act like things are really bad at least you can slowly keep your character out of the nerf radar and get keep them more likely to get buffed. That’s why I love @otter because he pretty much kept saying Nash sucks until he wasn’t so bad LOL (even though I always felt he was decent in all his iterations). It’s an interesting way to play the nerf/buff game.

Gief may not be that bad, but what’s going to get you changes faster? Saying “he needs a few adjustments” or “he’s the worst character in the game fix him PLZ Combo”. Yeah, the answer is obvious. Even if your character is good you might as well act like the sky is falling so the urgency is there LOL.

I feel part of the issue is Greenhand or a lack of it.

I’ve been playing Zangief since Super and his greenhand is the omni tool. Punishing, footsies, combos and even trolling (Blocked Greenhand into Ultra anyone? Lol.)

But its gone and it feels awkward. He’s not the same character at all and that is going to take some getting used to, time that no one has with the game yet.

Yup. The key with SFV has been change for most of the cast. They want everyone to keep enough of what makes them traditional, while not making them traditional. They want you to feel like you are playing a character with new tools and new things to play with. Not just what worked in SFIV or Alpha.

Only playing Gief since Super doesn’t really give you a wide range of all of the Giefs that have been around. There have been plenty of Giefs in other SF games that have had situational to no use for green hand or just didn’t have it period. If you’ve only been playing or have only really seen SFIV Gief, you only have so much to go on as far as what Gief has been capable of.

Look at all of the new stuff you have though. V Skill which gives you multiple points of armor, V Trigger which sucks in whiffed buttons and specials and gives your V Skill infinite armor, air SPD, comboable spd, crush counter s.HP that can be charged for a point of armor, RBG with faster run than SFIV, low crushing knee, standing headbutt that absorbs projectiles…that’s just off the top of my head for a character I’m not even going to main. Come on.

So much more interesting IMO than “im going to use green hand here cuz that’s the default”. I"m scratching my head as to how people can not find that exciting, but I guess that’s because those are all tools that you will have to puzzle together and don’t stand out on their own. All of those tools combined should make Gief quite a threat at multiple ranges and areas. Especially since characters like Dhalsim are now going to be floating in the air with Yoga Float half the match, swinging around green hand only gonna do so much vs a character airborne that often.

More Gief:

We just need to look at the risk and rewards of V-Gief.

Whether or not he can play smart low ball, small pot, low risk Poker, which is inherently more solid and consistent than going ALL IN every hand.

The important stuff is how V-Gief handles Momochi, Daigo, and Xian.

That’s because even though, it looks like a Russian Wrestler, its actually the German Hugo Haas. Just putting it out there.

Does having 3 V stocks mean his V-trigger lasts longer than everyone else’s? I sure hope so.

You’ve been playing gief since super? Wow that really makes an authority, you didnt even play him for the full period of one single game of his entire history. If you said super turbo maybe you’d have something, but that wouldnt make sense because green hand wasn’t good in ST. SF4 is the only game where green hand has been one of his primary tools. Blocked greenhand into ultra? Lmfao, yeah that works under 2000pp maybe considering blocked greenhand is a free punish everytime.
