Haha I think our pessimism rubbed off on you man, you were always one of the few who kept a positive attitude about Gief’s abilities, or lack thereof. I agree with everything you said. V-skill to EX SPD is far safer and doesn’t reset to neutral.
I didn’t know Tundra Storm had 4 frames of startup, that makes it even more worthless.
You’re probably right about Gief vs. Juri. I was basing my assumptions on nothing but personal experience. I guess I just haven’t played any Juris that know the matchup.
Gief was top 5 in vanilla SFIV as well, I think. 1200HP, invincible Lariat, Green Hand and a 2-frame SPD. His only issue was that he had 2 hard counters in Seth and Sagat.
We’ve yet to see the 4 hit variant of the V-Skill, used in a match, but the potential is there. Would be just like a Red Focus absorb from USF4. It’s just that you need to know your opponent’s character frame data like the back of your hand.
The sibberian express reset after stand LK strings seem fake. Say they are getting hit by the combo cr.mp. st.lk xx Lariat and mashing up or back dash. They either take the full damage of the entire combo, jump away or back dash if the follow up after stand LK doesn’t combo them.
So what are Zangief’s doing after cr.mp. st.lk to stop this kind of auto pilot defence? For the express to work, there needs to be a gap after stand LK, and a reason for them to block. Doing st.lk xx express resets mindlessly isn’t the way to go. Yet, I haven’t seen any Zangief’s setting up the express reset and conditioning well.
Yup, that clearly explains that haitani was one step ahead of Itabashi’s meta. Mash EX reversal in between the stand LK xx Lariat / RBG reset. If reset happens, Necalli’s EX reversal comes out. If no reset happens, no EX reversal comes out.
Answer, Itazan has to step it up, and re-counter with a bait or better.
Still second place for a Gief is a hell of a feat! He made some really weird decisions during that Final match which i think cost him but still congratulations are in order for an amazing player!
I think he needs even more situational tools. How about a counter that only works on weapon based attacks? I.e. Vega’s claw and birdie’s chain, but doesn’t do anything at all vs anything else. It won’t work on projectile type weapons though, having an option vs birdie’s can would be too strong. To balance it out, it’ll be crush counterable for 30 frames. Lastly, because nobody should feel like they are limited by high execution, the input for the move will just be forward mp!
But… but… Gief vs Nash is even in S2? And Chun is the worst character in the game? That’s what all the Super Gold experts in the main forum say! Clearly, this Stupendous guy is just a scrub who doesn’t know anything about Gief.
Don’t all the experts say that these mu’s are soooo much better now? The Bonchan set was actually 2-1 but it looked super free tbh and Ricki just completely shut him down. Both these characters might have gotten worse in s2 but they both still body Gief and what does that say lol. Then Snake loses to BjUnchaineds Necalli and that didn’t look good either, not exactly a top player imo no offense to Bj. Doesn’t even use Gief against Gamerbee. These are the two best US Giefs right? Top ten character right?
Heh good point Scratch but even Snake has admitted Zangief isn’t up for the job these days. Otherwise he wouldn’t be running around with Akuma and Alex in his back pockets.
Well he went around with E.Ryu and others in the pocket in Ultra as well so I guess Gief hasn’t been cutting it for a while
He dropped Alex a long time ago also. Alex was like a one month thing at best. He at first saw some potential in him, but now mostly thinks he sucks like most others do. Most Alex players I’ve talked to say Birdie is a better character to play over Alex. That could change after 2.1 patch, but thats general sentiment ATM
Regardless of who his back-up characters were, he thinks SFV Gief is not viable in tournaments. This coming from a guy who won the EVO 2010 HD Remix tournament with Gief, who is dead last on the tier list. What does that tell you…
Birdie won a major. I’m willing to bet money that Gief never will, unless all the stars are aligned for Itazan. Besides Itazan, no Gief will ever win a major in his current state.
Yeah, no. Definitely can’t believe him saying that Gief isn’t viable in tournaments when Itazan Gief top 2’d and almost won a major against some of his worst matchups (including the current best Dhalsim on the planet who should have made it uncompetitive for Itazan). SFV Gief maybe doesn’t play the way he wants to and he doesn’t get Itazan results, but that’s about where it ends there. Itazan shows it’s definitely possible, just the skills required to play Gief at that level are just currently going to be beyond anyone else ATM. If you can place top 3 at high competition events with a character, that character is officially viable.
It wasn’t too different from SFIV. Just a change in power. In SFIV no one was quite getting Snake Eyez results with Gief. Now in SFV no one is getting Itazan level results. Either way in both games Gief was/is definitely viable and saying otherwise is just crazy talk.
Itazan said in an interview recently that he doesn’t believe Gief is top tier but believes he is withing the top 10. Which I feel is about as close to accurate as anyone as said coming from THE number 1 Gief by a mile.
Alex is way closer to unviable pre 2.1 than Gief is now.
Dude you’re clueless I’m sorry. Gief will never win a major unless Itazan gets the luckiest draw ever and with all the bad mu’s he has to dodge that’s impossible. And Champ is not the best Sim in the world lmao good one.
You’re actually comparing SF4 Gief to 5’s? How many top Giefs did we have in 4? I can name at least a dozen. Now we have exactly one and only one. Snake in 4 was in the top 8 in every event he entered and won a few with tons of top 5’s. Itazan also had good tourney results when he traveled. The difference is night and day but somehow you think it’s very similar lol ok.
Itazan’s exact words were: “Maybe… I wish, top 10. That’s enough.” Due to his bad English he left it ambiguous where he believes Gief stands. It’s not clear whether he wishes Gief is top 10 or if he thinks Gief is maybe just barely top 10. Zangief is one of the few characters that hasn’t won a major yet, despite being piloted by one of the world’s greatest players. If even the Daigo among Zangief players gets blown up in what are not even considered to be his worst matchups, the character is not viable.
And Fchamp the best Dhalsim on the planet? Good one.
I don’t really see who would be better than F.Champ at the moment and has the highest score in CPT. Don’t see any other Sim qualifying for CPT Finals other than him.
If he used the words top 10 that’s good enough. It means he’s either top 10 or close to it. No reason to dissect it especially considering his English is actually pretty good compared to the other players who can’t even speak words without a translator. If you can place within top 8s at CPT events you’re effectively viable. Alex is in a much worse situation than Gief as we haven’t seen him in a top 8 at all in anything since Season 2 started. Whereas Gief almost fucking won the latest Euro CPT.
I would say Sim and Gief have about the same amount of viability. Not top tier, but clearly are capable of having a good day and top 8ing or winning an event.
Alex crying ok I’ll understand. Gief crying has to go in 2017.
I’ll ask again, do you even play Gief at all? Pretty much everything you say here is just totally wrong. Someone that says they’ve seen top Giefs use rbg in SF4 doesn’t know shit about Gief tbh and someone that thinks Champ is the best Sim in the world doesn’t know much about the game tbh. So in your mind Gief can win EVO right? He’s viable right? Itazan just needs to have “a good day” right?
