Zangief General Thread: Our Russian Skies Are Protected

Can anybody answer this? why doesn’t Gief cr.lp chain into st.lk anymore? I’m looking through all of the patch notes and I don’t see anything about it. could it be a glitch?

Feel so good kicking fraudulent Nash and Chun players asses in season two, those matchups used to be so busted. However I think we might have a new one Urien with his buffs seems very one sided. It’s new so I still need to mess with it but so far he has better normals, A good fireball, good movement and now a good anti-air. So for karen and him are my worst two, but Karen I don’t think is a disadvantage just my own mental block.

Ohhhh, I’m an idiot. I was reading it backwards as going from +4 to +5. thanks

I still have no idea to deal with SHP spamming chun
Her SLK anti air seems annoying as hell like S1 too

You still can’t jump at her but the standing FP you can now wiff punish with standing Lk lariat

Hey, guy, I also come from HK ar…the same city~^^

By the way, I am confident in playing “立回” with 2lk or 2lp “仕入” 623pp in SFIV,

SFIV Sagat is a tough match but can use 5mp “差合” its 5HK or 2lp “仕入” 623pp, I always do that …ha.ha…

Honestly, but in SFV…after green hand is removed …I find difficult to trace opponents than in SF IV who are extremely “Turtle” or “拉打” …especially VS Nash, Guile & Juri…those fucking character

I think I have to play more SFV to adapt those changes…

Is this a real setup for meaty headbutt or nah?

edit: nah

I just do dash forward after the lvl3 V-trigger, f.mk them and manually time my meaty Headbutt.

It’s a piece of piss when you time it from an air reset, don’t ever have to compensate or adjust your timing.

Anyone getting any real benefit from the st.mp -> cr.lp->ppp new combo? It literally only works point blank, and the only reason you would do it is off a cross-up combo. And even then, you could just start with cr.mp, which already takes more damage with st.lk, and we could do since season 1. And st.mp is not the best of his meaty normals…

no, why would you ever choose to do meaty st.mp over meaty cr.mp. It’s a combo route but stupid niche, there’s almost no need to ever use it.

Agreed. Not sure what the point of this is besides maybe if you land a st.mp in footsies you can get an extra 30 damage from jab afterwards maybe.

Is anyone else finding that most of giefs buffs are negligible? Making this normal or that normal +2 on hit is great if we are in range to actually threaten spd or get super(and how often are you pressing hp/hk at super range??). The loss of one + frame to cr.lp is really being a pain in the ass during strings and makes cr.lpx2 lariat/cr.lk cr.lp lariat inconsistent. St.lk lariat isnt as great a wiff punish tool as I thought, cr.mp being a frame faster is great but you cant combo lariat reliably from counterpoke range anyway. Gief still loses the same way in S2 as he did in S1, he cant get in and he gets mauled on defense. Im finding myself playing birdie more lately, hes still a better character then gief despite being nerfed overall while gief was “buffed”

the biggest buff is to lariat. it works now as intended and even manages to destroy Akuma almost by itself

the rest of the stuff is meant to be used in footsies and setups and it is not as simple to get. my gameplan is basically the same as in S1 but better Lariat and nerfs to a couple of characters mean it is more successful. need to hit the lab more to make use of the rest of the buffs

“can’t get in” syndrome basically hasn’t gone away. particularly with the nerf to white health, and our V-Skill unchanged to compensate. honestly, Gief’s V-skill should work like Akuma’s, just a hit activated manually after absorbing a hit. that would make it easier to counterpoke in some of the really hard matchups (well it should be fast enough to hit Dhalsim’s limbs. dunno if that’s possible or if it wouldn’t be broken against the rest of the cast)

Is there a mu that he previously lost (all of them imo) that now he wins because of these “buffs”? Imo no and some got even worse, Sim, Urien, Laura, etc. Maybe some mu’s got slightly better but he still sux ass. Plus, Akuma too will wreck Gief when people learn how to play him.

I fully agree, who cares if lariat got +20 damage if cr.lk was removed from his BnB? cr lp -> st lk -> lariat does more damage than cr lp -> lariat +20, and that’s if you’re in range to even hit it. I agree with boxinstevefox, none of his “buffs” changed anything, but the loss of cr lp being +5 and the white health change means gief is actually worse than he was in season 1. I can’t believe I actually thought that MAYBE things would get better in December…

if you are using lariat as your main tool for damage you are playing zangief wrong

and actually a lot of matches are easiear now because they nerfed most of the characters
the only nerf zangief got is the gray life and thats to all the cast too

The shoto matchups seem significantly easier after the patch. Chun Li isn’t such a pain anymore either, as is Nash. Dhalsim and Urien are nightmarish. The white health nerf really hurts when you’re trying to get in against either of them. Should’ve just given him his Green Hand!

On the plus side, the meter fills much faster now.

while lariat does screw up a lot of akuma setups that other characters have to hold, you’re not anti airing akuma with it 100%. He has too many ways to change his jump in timing in the air, and there are still blind spots and loses to cross ups. Watch other pros vs akuma they arent even lariating 100% akuma jumps.

The lariat buff hitting ppls outstretched limbs on fireballs is good but it inadvertently made getting in on people harder. Now people dont throw fireballs as close as before, making the random jump in on a fireball even harder to get. Instead people now contest with normal pressure in midrange which is harder for gief to deal with then fireball spam midrange.
