I don’t think its wise to press buttons against Zangief’s pressure, but you could convert off a pre-jump or back dash. That’s the way our frame traps work, unconventionally because of SPD.
It appears they want to remove auto pilot, and have to get us to think a little.
Only if they reduce input the lag down to 4 frames. =) But certainly not bad, if you can get it out on time, in 8 frames.
@Gemini_hk Nice thing I did find based on what you did, is that if you do a perfect 1st frame meaty of headbutt, you can link into sl. hk, then v-trig if you have it. And if you mess up, it kind of option selects a jump lol
^^ If you start that setup with EX SPD, the VT combo into EX air SPD stuns. Really nice find, especially since it’s so easy to confirm a CH on headbutt
This is hella gimmicky, as your opponent could simply hold back or jump, but its fun to do on unsuspecting opponents. And if they block it doesn’t work. Also depending on how stuby the three frame is, he might be out of range. Can sub ex spd for the light one, but then the set up ends: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oW5AG23w3ug
Only if you are point blank range, and they don’t back recover sadly. You have to hit the meaty on first frame, or it won’t work. Most likely only works in corner. And if you are wondering you can do headbutt, headbutt, cl.lk, into lariat for 229-304 damage, the results were inconsistent due to scaling.
If you don’t have cr lk to exrbg you are missing out. It is unreactable. Cr mp to exrbg pushes back to far and they can see it. Clk to exrbg works on block, hit, and counter hit. They can’t see it they have to guess good thing is you’re close enough on wake up for instant air Spd to catch a back dash.
You know at first I would have agreed with you, and would have sang about gief being horrid until the cows came home, but after training with him, I truly believe hes solid. It may not be the most popular opinion that he is viable, but he still has all his powerful anti-airs, including his standing lp, when other characters lost theirs. No one is jumping in on him. They have to resort to footies and dashes. His lariat takes more damage, so now stopping dashes with counter hit knee hammer/st.mp, or whiff punishing with st.lk and lariat takes some respectable damage. We can legitimately counter projectiles with double lariat, and headbutts give us meter, so we don’t really have to go in as much.
Speaking of meter, people better fear ex SPD this season. The SPD nerfs are offset by his hp.SPDS, and EX SDPs position buffs + the invincible wakeup nerfs. Why? Because now we can get A GUARANTEED SETUP off a meaty every time we land those, provided they don’t have the meter to do a invincible reversal or they don’t jump. Matter a fact THEY HAVE TO DO ONE OF THOSE TWO OPTIONS(Which air spds cover one, given they have stun increases, and ex leads back into a setup), and I actually feel they might nerf him because some characters don’t even have a invincible reversal to rely on…
I truly think he is finally made to be a balance of the sfv gief I have been waiting for, and the vision Capcom wanted him to be; not the greatest getting in and a sandbag on defence(unless you use his v-skill on what it is meant to be used for which is scouting normals with long recovery *drops mic), but if you land those heavy/EX SPD’s OH NELLY… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FX2Hxh4LaUQ
Now imagine this if he could do 240 damage…rigghhhttttt…
all I can agree on is that cr.lp > st.lk shouldn’t have been nerfed away from Gief, when I think combo/hit confirming I think consistency. If you want consistent lariat hits from your confirms, you’d preferrably want to use st.lk to cancel into it. Removing that option as left lariat somewhere between useful and a complete boon, certain jab confirms just have lariat whiff, or certain punishes just don’t work.
It’s annoying, but Gief is probably around the same if not SLIGHTLY better than S1. The h.spd and cr.lp > st.lk link removal I still cannot justify, but I think he’s got a more varied toolset.
