He was always a 50/50 monster though. Even in S1 he could knock you down once and run a train on you; his problem was he struggled immensely to get in. Now he is going to take even more damage getting in, plus his main tool (H SPD) does less damage? Just doesn’t really make sense. He definitely seems to have got some nice stuff, but he got some nerfs too which is just…mind boggling…
I don’t understand why they’re apparently so hysterically afraid of overbuffing him; he’s dead last on the tier list, by a good margin as well. Even if they kept all of the buffs and none of the nerfs he wouldn’t even be mid-tier.
If he’s able to whiff punish with st.LK xx lariat the way he could whiff punish with green hand, then I think he could be fine. But the nerf to grey life is going to be a killer IMO; the harm it does to v skill is obvious of course, but I think ppl forget that Gief doesn’t have a reversal so he has to block a LOT so he’ll be accumulating grey dmg there as well. The new st.MP is okay, but at 6f, I don’t know how many opportunities we’ll get to use it as a meaty.
I dunno, I’m going to try and wait till we get the official notes and play the build before crying too much, but this really doesn’t look good.
Wow, the lateral hitbox on the lariat reaches much further now. I’d really like to know how much it extends above his head, and if it can deal with cross ups now.

It could be. If the extra damage he takes from the grey health nerf and the damage he isn’t getting with HP/EX SPD isn’t made for by the improved utility of lariat, then this season could have him at a “net nerf” so to speak. Still tho, we’re looking at in a vacuum. We don’t know how the system changes and nerfs/buffs to other chars are going to affect things (Some matchups like Dhalsim and FANG are obviously gonna be a lot worse tho lol) so it could turn out that this stuff doesn’t hurt him that much.
I wonder if lariat will be viable in footsies now. Maybe that’ll offset the flex nerf. Does anyone know for sure that the amount of grey life received from flexing hasn’t changed from S1?
You’re obviously not a good player when you think a loss of 20 hp is no big deal, just saying. Especially when ex-spd is the main go to command grab, that shit adds up quickly but if you’re fine with an unnecessary loss of damage then ok.
It really isn’t as bad now that the follow up options we have from the EX and HP SPD are much stronger. Think about it, you lose 20 damage but you’ve gained access to better confirm options post grab. That’s why I think it has its damage decreased, and whilst it isn’t a positive change I don’t think it’s devastating.
How much stronger are those follow up options really tho? Gief always got cr.LP, st.LK xx lariat after HP and EX SPD and there isn’t enough FA to dash up and do a st.MP combo. The only thing different post grab is the combo. It’s cr.LK, cr.LP xx lariat now. Same damage, same advantage after. I mean, I guess the new CH combos with cr.MP are cool, but after EX/HP SPD, ppl are usually gonna block or jump/backdash, not press buttons so I wouldn’t say his “new” post-grab game by itself is worth losing 20 dmg every time you land a non-LP SPD.
