Seriously listing something aesthetic already invalidates any other opinions you’ll ever have on Gief for me. Sorry bro.
If he didn’t need green hand he didn’t need green hand. There’s no crazy formula behind it. He’s proven to be strong in every game other than like ST or IV without it. Just in the same way that 3S Chun is the best character in the game while all of her trademark special moves (that are known for being strong) are negligible to the point where you can win entire matches without using them. Power isn’t determined immediately by the list of things you have, but the strength of what you do have.
Either way I’m done since you listed eye color. RIP argument.
you know that the eye color thing was a bad joke right? I also listed like 10 times “no green hand”.
and I still say green hand would change everything.
oh and guess what? SF2 is not everything and it was a bad game if you look back at it now, SPD,Lariat and Banishing Flat are still his 3 signature moves and green hand made Zangief unique compared to other grapplers, he is more a Haggar than a Zangief now.
The defensive grappler has good representation with birdie since even though he’s incredibly slow he has amazing normals and then you have mika who’s extremely mobile, has that amazing and borderline broken butt splash and as such can impose the 50/50 grappler mixups much better than gief can.
I don’t know where gief fits in this. No other character struck me as weak, but Gief does and very much so.
DISCLAIMER: yeah game is not done, it’s not like we have anything else to talk about etc etc etc
The game not being done is fine, just not a big fan of people listing things that aren’t really relevant to why he would actually be bad even in theory.
He seems like one of those characters where you can’t really judge him on just any one of his tools. He seems more like a character that when his tools are put together, can create something quite scary. Not saying he looks like the best character in the game or anything, but his tools when put together look like they’ll have people getting opened up.
You can say that for every SF character and that’s the point, Zangief’s ‘tools’ are weak compared to the other grapplers, his MP and MK are not cancable, so even if he can “combo” into his super, he only can use it with a jump in or a jab/short.
We’ll see what other combo theory people may be missing as he becomes playable in a beta or something. A lot of people seem confused about what is and what isn’t cancelable or linkable so there could be some things people are missing. Even with a character where it seems obvious.
Plus Gief has quite a few new tools that are rather unexplored for him or in any SF game really. Gonna take some time to see where they go vs each character. He isn’t just essentially walk forward, buttons, green hand, command grab anymore.
I don’t know. I think ST still holds up fine in comparison to many fighting games still to this day. The formula was not only simple, but at it’s core, I think it captures the essence of what makes the Street Fighter series the greatness that it is. Don’t get me wrong, there are lopsided matchups and other flaws with the game, but every fighter has those. And even with those, it’s STILL an incredible fighting game.
I just think he looks boring, it’s all I can say. His dash speed looks incredible and his v-skill is pretty interesting, but none of that makes him look like more fun to me. Then again, I’m holding zangief to his MvC standard where you motherfucking EXPLODE after a final atomic buster.
Also now that no one has brought this up yet; his v-trigger mode makes him look like a giant dog penis. I’m serious, he’s all red and veiny as fuck and looks unsettling. That’s all he looks like to me; some animal’s engorged dick. I really don’t like it. I wish they had made his skin slightly metallic looking and grayish, to play on mecha zangief and his insert name of mode because I forgot it mode in mvc where he turns grey and gets red eyes.
This thread is confusing haha. He looks extremely strong, just quite a bit different. He seems a lot more fun to play, quite a bit more varied opposed to the past. Far too many defensive tools to be ever be bad IMO. Everyone has been complaining about how easy SFV seems but then you can’t figure out a character in a week and call him trash? C’mon lol
I really don’t think he looks strong. I think mika is a better grappler and birdie has better pokes… he really isn’t needed in this game with the rest of the cast being what it is IMO.
But well, there we are. One interesting thing tho is his air 360 ; it stops his momentum, I think it’ll be great to bait AA with bad recovery (DP, cr.hp and such). I mean, you do a jump in then mid jump you do your 360, you land with a 720 to punish them :O. I can’t wait to see this in an actual match.
As for the rest… yeah it’s kinda meh. Even his V.trigger spinning thing doesn’t look like it’s +on block from the match against a mika. Wait and see with the final build, so far he doesn’t feel quite done yet.
From that Momochi Ken vs Zangief video over in the Ken thread, Zangief’s SPD looks as fast as it ever was. Ken got SPD’d more than once while applying pressure to gief.
Do people just defend Capcom and their characters blind eye? He looks bad to me, and it should be address now rather than later. It’s the beta and feedback is norm. Mika and Birdie do everything and more. Atleast in SF4 his grab range was insane, which made his neutral grab game great. Right now, his grabs are weak in range and damage, his vortex is unsafe and people can safely escape and he cant combo anything. Oh wait here come the Capcom naysayers who rather defend and rationalize weak characters because your not allowed to address concerns about anything Capcom. Just because a game is still in development does not mean Zangief will get any better. Sometimes characters get overlooked and need to be reminded.
There is no vortex due to quick rises. SPD leaves you neutral frame advantage and the running grab seems to give some advantage so maybe you can time a meaty.
