Zangief General Thread: Our Russian Skies Are Protected

Nope. No good. Throw whiff is too short for a jump cancel Sibberian Express of any sort.

HK Sibberian Express. 30 frame startup? Come on! That’s some seriously broken ass shit.

They should remove it from the game or explain themselves!!!

Damn, oh well. jump cancel HP SPD it is

This is a rather serious question, and not a dig at chief, but why does zangief need an overhead if he has spd? As far as I’m concerned no overhead or comboable overhead will lead to the damage of an spd and it sort of acts as a non blockable overhead. Five frames is faster than overheads as well. Most overheads are punishable too, although not to the extent of a whiffed spd.

I’m not speaking for Chief but he’s not saying that Gief needs an overhead. He’s just pointing out the stupidity and cluelessness of Combofiends comments.

On the topic of Overheads

Over in the SFV General thread someone spoke on how despite overheads being slow they still manage to work and just become another tool in which the player have to guess.

I mean how many people have fallen for Ken and his overhead for quite a few and even at the top levels. I wouldn’t mind Gief having one heck Birdie has one (yeah I know he’s a pseudo-grappler) but if it opens them up I’m all for it.

But yeah this is Chief pointing out Combofiend and his way of just outright denying that they might have made some errors towards characters and how “finished” they are.

Just for the heck of it I booted up SF4 a couple days ago. Haven’t played that game in about 5 months and wasn’t expecting to find anyone online but surprisingly there were quite a few. Only played 6 or 7 matches but it just felt good to actually win because I was the better player. I was rusty as fuck obviously but Gief felt completely op and fast as shit lol. It felt good playing footsies again and using actual skill. What a concept smh.

I see, wasn’t really understanding the scope of the quote or when it was said. Chief does make some good points now that I look at his post again. I was thinking that he was referring to grapplers in general, in which as you pointed out, birdie has one. Hugo had a few in ultra as well (DA BUTT) which were rather useful. Sorry for misunderstanding.

To the point of grimm jow and people getting hit by slow overheads, I don’t really think it is a guess, rather that people are so used to throw or dash throw and just get caught. Hopkick kind of works as the fast dash to mixup/throw but the throw is so televised its better to backdash to avoid spd and just take the air reset. A better cancel from lk or mk to ender (buffed lariat? idk really) after hopkick I think would solve this so well

There is just one thing I miss about sf4 gief. His atomic suplex with the oki afterwards. It also looks really cool.

In these situations Zangief has the option of reading the back-dash with hk for a cc juggle. So, it’s not a situation where back-dashing and just eating a normal is always the better option.

Yea, I was definitely referring to Combofiend’s refusal to acknowledge why Gief’s tools aren’t working. Saying “command grab characters aren’t weak” is a broad statement and does nothing to address why ZANGIEF is bad. Necalli has a command grab; Vega has a command grab. Of course “command grab characters” aren’t weak. But Gief is, and I just want him to admit it. Not even expecting a fix anytime soon, just a simple “Yes we are starting to see that [insert character(s)] are noticeably weaker than the rest of the cast and are looking into it” Instead we get misleading online data and empty statements like that from Combofiend. I try not to complain too much on here and just work with what we have but that shit is infuriating man.

Never gonna happen. The guy is totally clueless.

I get it. It is not some unexperienced snob we are talking about here. Combofiend knows damn well Gief is lacking something. I know he has an idea how to make him a bit better. I enjoy playing Gief a lot but sometimes I get so bummed cause he’s lacking something.

Im afraid as long as combofiend is running things then gief wont really be good compared to the rest of the cast and that goes for sf 6 and so forth

Hugo also had the kick that Birdie has now as an overhead.

True opponents become conditioned to try and block something that it makes the overhead that much more nasty since you won’t be looking for it especially with tic throws being very effective amongs the top tier, just another benefit for certain members of the cast. So far from the entire time I’ve watched tournaments the only guy who shut down overheads was the Chun-Li player who beat Chris T in the Europe tourney he tagged him every time it also helped that Chris T telegraphs his offensive set ups a little bit. I believe it was CCL I could be wrong I have to look it up.

As for Gief most have gotten savvy to the knee and prep those buttons to stop the SPD since it has not hit inv. I think if EX SPD had hit inv it would be tremendous IMO.

@Grimmjow316 If the EX spd was fully invincible it would be rad, doubt it will happen though. Wow ex spd lol

Yeah but the best overhead hugo had was the hopkick (down down mk). Could combo for okay damage as well and went over fireballs. He also had st hp for an overhead which had armor and would cover a lot of options like jump away as well. That move sort of acted like gief’s headbutt but could anti air, and was just much more useful in general. So basically hugo had a ton of overhead mixups but was still considered ass by most people, just like gief. Does jump or jump back mk hit overhead for gief? I’ve yet to try but all this talk about overheads i’m curious now

it works all the time against another gief or birdie (maybe urien? I didn’t mod him in so don’t know) and works on everyone’s wakeup but hard to time.

Gief top 8 winners in Euro online tourney. He Just sent a mika to losers.

Sucks I’m at work missing all this.

It’s been a good weekend for the big man so far.

Man what is the secret to get air spd out after CC st Hk?
