Zangief Combo/Tech Thread: Tips and tricks from the mother land!

Looking for some tips on how to safely activate my v-trigger. I know the obvious answer is to combo into it, but I’m finding those opportunities to not pop up too often against better players. I don’t generally land a lot of my medium or fierce attacks in footsies.

Comboing into it, going through projectile, or whiff punishing with it.

There is a video of vtrigger activation set ups. The most notable is after ex SPD. You also can off cc hk > hk for a frame advantage if you catch them early on the second kick. Some matchups it’s better to just use v reversal though.

There are lots of options. I don’t have the link, but search for vtrigger meaties on YouTube or in one of these threads.

Just a quick question: why even consider to use meaty f.MK if you can use meaty f.HP that have completely same “intro” frames (12 exe, 4 active) but much better follow-up both on block (+2 normally, meaty can make it up to +5) and on hit (+7 normally, meaty and counter can make it up to +12)?
Just asking, because this is something I really do not understand.

Using f.hp against crouching, you can’t get a confirm into lariat. Also, on block you’re not in range to land normal grab, HP SPD or a confirm into lariat against jumping opponents, you’re only in range for MP SPD or a single normal attack to catch jumps.

Basically, f.hp on block or hit leads to fewer options than meaty f.mk with the benefit of better frame advantage.

Less push back, which leads to better confirms into lariat, as well as better positioning for SPD. Variety keeps things interesting. Flowcharts are easy to read. Mix it up.

TY both for explanation. Variety was only think I was able to think about, did not realize the difference in pushback and resulting options

Just a detail about lariat confirms and crouch issues - AFAIK you recover full standing from knockdown so if you hit f.HP as a true meaty, it will guarantee you opponent standing…? At leat such is my experience with resets.

Nah, you’ll recover in crouching state from recovery if you hold down. Even meaty headbutts won’t change that.

s.mp after cc s.hk gives a lot more advantage

Guile match sucks. I start a alt account for Necalli and used gief instead at about 2k and got it to gold in about 4 hours, but then hovered between 3800 and 4100 cause Guile. Lol.

I have been using v-skill more during my v-trig instead of lariat to help out with Guile/Nash and other characters. I am starting to think Geif is really reliant on his v-skill. It seems counterintuitive at first because you feel like you are loosing health, but with well placed traps after the flex should help recover the gray health. Combine this with well timed EX Siberian and it allows you to play offensive and defensively. Still new to Geif, but this is what I have noticed…

Anyone know any good traps after flex?

when v trigger is active does it fill up when you use v skill

I wish… but honestly, if I was going to change one thing about Gief it would be the ending for his v-skill. I would get rid of the flex and then after a successful iron body your next attack would be reduced by 2 frames.

So it would still work the same, reg v-skill could absorb up to 2 attacks and then VT v-skill would pretty much take unlimited hits, however, instead of the flex ending you would choose the next attack and it would reduced by 2 frames…

EDIT:

After thinking this over. I would limit the revised v-skill to have 1 of two choices for next attack, also gray damage would have to be taken in order for frame advantage to work:

LP SPD - This one has the longest range and lowest damage (would now be 3 frames)

Standing LK - Attack can combo into Lariat, etc (would now be 3 frames)

standing lk does combo to a lariat

Standing LK needs more beef.

0 on block and +2 on hit, leaves no room for the imagination. Not to mention its 5 frame start-up.

And we need a crouching KKK Lariat that hits low. A mini grounded Sibberian Blizzard.

Standing lk does its job as a cancel into Lariat confirms and a fool-proof tick normal; ticking off of c.lp and c.lk will cause grabs to whiff if it’s a counter hit.

Lariat needs a better lower body hit-box so it doesn’t whiff vs crouching as often; adjust it so you can c.lp, st.lk, Lariat consistently after HP SPD -> dash vs crouching and we’re good.

Depends on the situation and distance.

So you can go for a normal throw if close and on whiff if they jump up you can tiger knee EX air SPD. The only way to beat it is to attack very early in the air where if would whiff if you did nothing, they have to KNOW you are gonna EX SPD in the air. The alternative, which this is a read, is to dash the instant LP/EX air SPD to punish a back jump.

If in V-trigger (and you didnt cancel the V-skill on hit) you can low short, low jab xx VT.

At most ranges you can SPD since the Flex is +2 on hit (-2 on block).

F+FP will hit them and knock them down, if you think they will jump.

Point blank you can s.mp, it’s a 4 frame gap so it’s solid and stops jumps. On counter hit this allows you to combo super since counter hit have less pushback. Solid choice to try if they are button happy and the s.mp on hit will give you meter for super. Standing lk works the same way as well, but you need to hit confirm it fast and it works with or without counter hit.

For a bit harder punish if it’ll get you meter (very little) you can c.lp, s.lk xx super. Only a 2 frame gap there and leaves you in tick range after one jab (if the flex was point blank).

You can F+MK to reset them if they jump.

From semi close range tiger knee SPD works. Best use normal ones since you get punished either way on a bad read imo.

You can whiff punish shotos c.mk with s.lk to super, I did it yesterday so I quit the game and retired. That shit is stupid hard to do and It’ll probably never happen again lol.

TY. Still new to Gief. The official tutorial said that flex should have priority over attack is that true? Would that make it a counter attack?
