Zangief Combo/Tech Thread: Tips and tricks from the mother land!

I think crouch LK does appear to have less push back.

It may not look like much, but Crouch LK into Regular Throw, is mathematically strong. Regular Throw has a huge positive expected value in this game! Risk free sans reversals.

You could get a safe 100 expected damage off of EX SPD in the mid range, with dash in regular throw or cr.LK combo. Keep the pot small and avoid large swings! =)

If you SPD at key spots, where they are looking for the SPD, you run the risk of getting blown up. In these spots, you’ll have to use regular throw.

See if you make crouch LK, your go to move on the dance floor. They have to respect it. And they know, they have to crouch block against you in the HP or EX SPD-Dash game. And it would allow you to more easily confirm their crouching or standing (likely jumping) state. Allowing you to add on extra damage from a Stand MP, Stand MK, Stand HK, Headbutt, Knee Hammer, Crouch HP, Lariat as you catch them trying to jump or back dash. It could be used to “confirm” and open up unsuspecting pre-jumpers.

Man, Meaty Knee Hammer in the corner is so strong:

  1. Even on block, +6 on hit vs normal recovery after Lariat, Forward Grab, Sweep, Siberian Express.
  2. Close enough on hit or block to tick throw into normal grab and HP SPD.
  3. Close enough on hit to allow combos into st.lk, Lariat vs crouching.
  4. On block, leaves you close enough to punish standing opponents with c.lp, st.lk, Lariat which starts the cycle all over again.

It’s pretty nasty; I need to fool around with back recovery and see what the frame advantage looks like. The corner pressure is real.

So sexy

body splash is fun

Thank you comrade, this is good stuff

A lot of ppl already know ex spd has smaller hit box than normal spd. Here is my way to utilized it. After lp.spd, do a dash in check to see if they know lp.spd dash is minus. If they know, they will jab you out, no big deal. Then next time, you do lp.spd, dash, ex spd. You will be out of reach of their jab range and land a grab. This tech is character specific because they have different jab range, I know Gief and Alex’s jab are long enough to reach ex spd. Of course if they choose to wake up with any long reach button within 7 frames you will lose, but most of ppl just jab.

I find that in ranked matches, most of higher rank players already know lp.spd dash is minus but none of them would learn ex spd still grabs them in such short time due to the character unfamiliarity. They tend to think it’s a rollback because if they check the framedata, all spds are the same.

Just remember on block meaty knee is not great and you lose to 3 frame jabs

I think there’s a lot of people who still dont understand how meaties work, and their functions and purposes.

Every move has more than one active frame. If you land in the later active frames, your frame advantage improves 1 frame for each frame that didn’t connect before their wakeup. F. Mk has 4 active frames. Meaning that it can be up to +0 in best case scenario.

This is why some meaties can combo, when they won’t combo normally. And it make some moves safe that normally aren’t.

It doesn’t lose to jab, but it isn’t positive frames. It’s a neutral situation, but if your opponent is spamming jab there are ways to deal with that as well.

Yeah something can be meaty and still negative. The knee is -3 with 4 active frames. Pressure is non existent vs 3 frame jabs. Only way to be scared if Gief is stocked on super.

So random tidbit, after V-reversal you can dash and instant air BD a jump back vs Chun. Maybe others also, did not test. Hard read, but oh so satisfying.

Also a hit confirm counter hit set up to super is c.lp (must be meaty to beat 3 frame jab mash), counter hit c.mp, s.lk xx super. You can omit the s.lk and just super after mp also. Beats 4 frame jabs.

They would have to be prepared for the knee hammer, and know it’s not + frames. Gief has a pretty easy time convincing people not to push buttons. Even if they are, they are still in the corner where gief wants them. It doesn’t lose to 3 frame jabs, and you don’t lose pressure.

You just lose frame advantage on block, and what you get is a strong confirm on hit. And something different in your arsenal to keep the opponent on their toes. If you always headbutt, or some other meaty, you are making yourself easier to be read. More options the better.

If all you wanted to say was it isn’t plus frames, then you were repeating what he had already stated when he said it was even on block. But I wouldnt call that losing to 3 frame jab.

By lose to 3 frame jab I mean after block. Gief can’t continue pressure due to having only 4 frame normals. Safe yeah, but you lose your turn. People just aren’t familiar with frame on it and panic. Not saying it’s bad, just not the best thing ever.

My bad, it sounded like you meant it was punishable in the first post. I just wanted to point out its still viable in the later posts.

Meatiest knee hammer is even on block. After that, 3 frame normals will beat anything you do with the exception of EX Siberian Express (armor is active on frame 2 or 3) and CA so there’s still a mix-up even with 1 meter. It’s another option vs the “safer” Meaty Headbutt with better positioning and options on hit and block, at the cost of less frame advantage (Meatiest Headbutt is +10 on hit, +5 on block but you’re at max MP SPD range and can only confirm into Lariat vs standing, which is the reason I went digging for other meaties).

It’s not fool-proof, but warrants use to keep yourself in Zangief’s most threatening zone with access to a damaging knock-down confirm back into itself. You have access to the standard c.lp, st.lk, Lariat combo but it doesn’t do enough damage to make taking a grab preferable IMO, and has fewer hits to confirm into Lariat.

With the range on EX BD, you could probably just hard read the jump and grab her out of it with an instant air EX BD. It feels like there’s more range on it than jab SPD.

Nope instant EX wont grab after V-reversal, but the range is bigger on EX because the way it works vs normal BD.

Meaty jab is great in itself. Set up counter hit c.mp which leads to linked CA.

I looked it up before making this and found nothing, so sorry if it’s common knowledge already

Interesting…only on big fat Birdie or maybe works in mirror match too?

That’s not a fuzzy guard, just a instant overhead. Fuzzy guard is making them block high to hit their standing hitbox on recovery from block with a instant jumping normal.
