You were getting jumped in for free too much and you waaaaaay jumped too much yourself. He has one of the best all purpose AAs in the game so unless you know he’s doing something else, jumping into his cr. HP is guaranteed. His jump is pretty low so it takes a bit of getting used to but in all honesty, you can AA his quite easily on his way up with b+mp since he jumped so close. HK RK is difficult to time since he jumps so fast but far HK would have worked great if he jumped from further distances.

Your wakeup pressure against rog was also inappropriate. If rog has EX, crossing him up on wakeup is pointless since he can EX headbutt for free and get away unless you option-select him. I would have been buffering U2 like crazy every time I tried crossing him up on wakeup. That wakeup you did was a very good idea since without meter, rog is free against overheads but at the same time, it was also a bad idea because a) you didn’t get a hard knockdown and b) he had meter and could easily armor punch such a heavily telegraphed move on reaction.

You also need to time your safejumps better. You shouldn’t have gotten hit by that wakeup ex dash straight in round 2. Balrog is one of the easiest characters to safe jump once you know how. Also a lot of the time, he did so many unsafe moves against you that you didn’t punish. EX zonk is not a valid punish tool, you need to remember that. The startup is too long for that. Every low dash (I’m talking about this specific match, in general I think max range low dash might be safe) or overhead blocked are at least -5 so you could have gotten a free bnb and maybe even a hard knockdown if you ended with ex RK. And seeing as you played someone who just liked to throw out dashpunches, I would have kept EX zonk charged at all times. High level balrogs never just throw out dashpunches because they’re too easy to punish on reaction even before they hit. I would have used a lot more rocks > max range slide and I would have tried to frame trap more. I don’t think this rog would have fallen for it cause his defense is pretty solid but most rogs have a penchant for mashing jab whenever in a tight spot. I would also have tried more cr. mk slides just outside of jab range for no other reason than to frustrate the balrog. Once the player starts getting frustrated and plays sloppily, they pretty much lose the match. If you know how to deal with rog, he has an incredibly hard time coming back unless he plays super solid.

Also for the love of god quit using focus attacks so much. You used them in almost every bad way imaginable. Balrog has no good reversals but if you tried the same thing against a shoto, you would have been eating shoryukens every time you anti-air focused. In this matchup I would have done it at around balrogs sweep range so if he actually tried to go for a sweep or dashpunch, you get a free lvl 2 and knockdown. If he doesn’t and just blocks, it gets you in for free since his lvl 2 FADC is safe and lets you start your own pressure. This balrog kept throwin out armored dashes but if he saved his meter, every time he did a dash punch into a focus attack, it would have meant a supercancel and you would have taken 40%-50% damage

I don’t think you were completely out played though, I just think you don’t know the matchup too well. I would suggest going into training mode and just learning how to beat each of rogs dashpunches. Theres a reason balrog doesn’t get too far in high level play. His gameplan is too linear. If you learn the answers to each of them, you have the match in the bag.

In summary:

Anti air more

Apply safer pressure

Punish better

EX zonk charged at all times

Avoid playing footsies

No focus attacks

I just need to give crazy props to this post. I mean this is a great post. It’s a very good analysis that breaks it down not only the match very well, but the overall matchup very well also. Someone really needs to update the matchup thread and incorporate some of this into the balrog section.

at first I was going to say that you should tick your throws more since he blocked all your frame traps but you already took care of that towards the end.
I do think that you should land f.mp>cr.mp> whatever since at that range and with counter that link is easy as shit to do.
Also don’t ever ever forget f.mp(CH) Ultra 2.
I’m still trying to condition myself to always buffer just in case it counter hits.
I don’t have good elf matchup experience yet so you seem way more adept at it than I would’ve been.

What do most players usually use at the end of blockstrings?LP criminal upper or rocks?Looking at the replays I was definitely doing it wrong by using Ruffian kicks which were obviously unsafe and formed into a bad habit

best thing to do is too keep on pressure after c.lp, c.lp with throw, f.mp, nj, crossup, crack kick, delayed zonk against ch, or (delayed) c.lk into lp cu [can be punished but is most likely “safe”] etc

Honestly… i watched him Full screen dash punch when you had ultra and I was like “OMFG ULTRA HIM!” Lol… Just zone him with the rocks itll force them to have to take chip or ATTEMPT to use the TAP. Which… if you can predict it then poof, freeeeeee ultra. Not to mention if you hit him with a ex Stone you can ultra the moment you see it hit.

When im block stringing with cody. I just do what zUkUu said, keep doing Cody’s amazing Normals until they mess up then punish them badly for it.

vVv Fear bringing back the cody. Lots of good block stringing if you are looking for that kind of video. I’m a big fan of his crouch light punch on hit into f.mp. Really sets up lots of good things and gets your opponent afraid to hit buttons.

i actually think those are weak blockstrings and mixups. no s.mp whatsover. no zoning…he is fearless with non ex bingo which is cool i guess… but fact of the matter is he was playing very weak opponents… so those videos really dont help people too much IMO. (no hate).

Actually looked like he was constantly fishing for counterhits, which i still don’t have down so the vids were certainly helpfull for me. You don’t need to watch a pro player who never misses a link to learn stuff.

& while i try not to… sometimes i totally space on the more advanced concepts of the game altogether
im also the king of having a life lead(sometimes sizeable) & then doing nothing as my opponent whittles me down to zero life
& my gf claims the phrase most commonly heard across the house is: “i **hit **throw i promise!”

but ive been playing a loooong time, sometimes im not totally worthless & sometimes i pull off some ok stuff… which is what ill try to deliver

if anyone has any advice on that subject(other than “buy a Hauppauge”) please pm or somn :tup:

I feel like sometimes my brain isn’t as fast yet to register all these reactions. I guess in time I’ll be able to be spot on, but for the mean time dropping combos and missing aas are my life story.

I really like that you used close stand hard kick as an anti crossup antiair. I don’t think most people realize that the hitbox actually extends a little over the back of Cody’s head.
