yea, quite a few sabre vids been posted, just scroll up
VS. Blanka that forgot how to block… Sy99r966ac0]YouTube - ?SSF4 Attempting 2 Master Cody 3?VS. Descent Balrog
This Vid is against one of the best Balrogs on XBL tKo SENTINEL… I don’t know how to deal with his pressure… feedback please…
Reflex, Put the pressure on him don’t let it go on you. Less unsafe bingos.
Yeah I did do a lot of random bingos, and I was trying to keep the pressure on him but balrogs jabs are just too good… and then there is the wake up ex dashes that absorb one hit…
more rocks would be appropriate i think(@1:39 exrock off the CH c.fierce wouldve been ideal)
& maybe more cu
more aa… i think there was one successful aa in round 3… a c.mk
& weakish punish(full meter, full u2) in rd3 that prolly coulda sent it to a 4th round @ 2:33
&&&&&&more knife! :nunchuck:
Thanks for the feedback bro… i was trying to AA but balrogs jump is so wierd and fast that he just kept catching me off guard… ill get it down though… also has alot of priority so maybe c.mk is my best AA vs. Balrog?.. ive decided that Cody is now my main and i’m dropping gief… more vidoes coming soon but here is a japanese cody tearing apart a dhalsimR8HTqdHo0FA]YouTube - [SSF4] Cody(dicek777)vsDhalsim(kzodesu) 10/08/09 PS3 and here is another
I played that same Balrog and beat him handedly earlier today although I made a crap load of mistakes…haha. Your best anti air against Boxer is b.mp if he’s jumping close range as that Balrog tended to do, it resets him and also gives you time to charge a bingo to stop those random dash punches he’s doing. For long range jumps, use a early HK ruffian since if you do it lste, at best you’ll trade and at worst you’ll eat a fat combo. What you need to do is stop the random attempts at anti air bingo and just block and tech his advances. I know it’s tough but with time you’ll get the hang of it. I see way too many bingos out of range although it can be tough to get the timing for those on reaction so i sympathize, unsafe combos with no hit confirms. and just overall sloppiness. Not meant to offend you or anything, but you gotta work on those fundamentals before you can beat footsie oriented characters with consistency like Balrog and etc.
You should be the one rushing Rog down, constant crossups, tick throw attempts, and then work in your counter hit game. React to the dash punches, keep yourself firmly cemented as the aggressor and keep him out of the air, forcing him to use his normals on the ground which although good, can be punished accordingly if you’re on your footsie game.
I’ll try and upload my video of me playing him, and give you a visual clue on how to go about the matchup, also this Balrog was really random and is not a good indicator of a solid Balrog in my opinion lol
I wanna ask something about what i8600011 is doing. He mostly always does close HP, c.HP. Instead of a close MP on opponents waking up. Isn’t that dangerous or is there something in what he’s doing that makes it look quite safe when he does it? Like, does he do it meaty or something?
from my understanding when he meatys the cl.hp it gives him like +4 or something on block instead of +1 (don’t quote me on that) giving him ample time to counter hit with cr.hp. I need to test that out more though because I don’t use cl.hp meaty at all.
because it does more damage / stun and gives the same oppotunity as cl.mp combo-wise (except u2)
Some new additions
First some infrequent character matchups
Japanese Cody up against a Feilong giving a funny EX Zonk beat down at the end
84VFKFiGSnw]YouTube - mayas2 [Fei] vs kawagu111chi [Cody
Against an El Fuerte since there aren’t many of those match up videos

2 videos against a good ryu. Both close matches

Finally a very interesting match against another ryu. This cody is very effective at the fireball game. It would seem when you are matching up against ryu in the fireball game you actually have enough time to dash forward and zonk after a bad stone. Also, he uses f.mp at full range with a very minute walk back and it leaves cody just outside the range of ryu’s godlike crouch medium kick as long as no buttons are pressed afterwards. Very useful info for baiting out the move and punishing. I’m not sure if the little walk back is necessary or not. It is at about 2:20

damn… was hoping to watch the last vid on the link but its dead
Ventt got me excited for the last vid D:
Also buffer mk RK behind every cr. lk when it gets to mid range so you can push him out again. Balrog is a footsie character and because cody has such a slow walk speed and bad pokes compared to rog, I believe this range is heavily in rogs favor so its better for cody to either push him out or rush in. Basic zoning sense I suppose but I could be wrong.
You were getting jumped in for free too much and you waaaaaay jumped too much yourself. He has one of the best all purpose AAs in the game so unless you know he’s doing something else, jumping into his cr. HP is guaranteed. His jump is pretty low so it takes a bit of getting used to but in all honesty, you can AA his quite easily on his way up with b+mp since he jumped so close. HK RK is difficult to time since he jumps so fast but far HK would have worked great if he jumped from further distances.
Your wakeup pressure against rog was also inappropriate. If rog has EX, crossing him up on wakeup is pointless since he can EX headbutt for free and get away unless you option-select him. I would have been buffering U2 like crazy every time I tried crossing him up on wakeup. That wakeup you did was a very good idea since without meter, rog is free against overheads but at the same time, it was also a bad idea because a) you didn’t get a hard knockdown and b) he had meter and could easily armor punch such a heavily telegraphed move on reaction.
You also need to time your safejumps better. You shouldn’t have gotten hit by that wakeup ex dash straight in round 2. Balrog is one of the easiest characters to safe jump once you know how. Also a lot of the time, he did so many unsafe moves against you that you didn’t punish. EX zonk is not a valid punish tool, you need to remember that. The startup is too long for that. Every low dash (I’m talking about this specific match, in general I think max range low dash might be safe) or overhead blocked are at least -5 so you could have gotten a free bnb and maybe even a hard knockdown if you ended with ex RK. And seeing as you played someone who just liked to throw out dashpunches, I would have kept EX zonk charged at all times. High level balrogs never just throw out dashpunches because they’re too easy to punish on reaction even before they hit. I would have used a lot more rocks > max range slide and I would have tried to frame trap more. I don’t think this rog would have fallen for it cause his defense is pretty solid but most rogs have a penchant for mashing jab whenever in a tight spot. I would also have tried more cr. mk slides just outside of jab range for no other reason than to frustrate the balrog. Once the player starts getting frustrated and plays sloppily, they pretty much lose the match. If you know how to deal with rog, he has an incredibly hard time coming back unless he plays super solid.
Also for the love of god quit using focus attacks so much. You used them in almost every bad way imaginable. Balrog has no good reversals but if you tried the same thing against a shoto, you would have been eating shoryukens every time you anti-air focused. In this matchup I would have done it at around balrogs sweep range so if he actually tried to go for a sweep or dashpunch, you get a free lvl 2 and knockdown. If he doesn’t and just blocks, it gets you in for free since his lvl 2 FADC is safe and lets you start your own pressure. This balrog kept throwin out armored dashes but if he saved his meter, every time he did a dash punch into a focus attack, it would have meant a supercancel and you would have taken 40%-50% damage
I don’t think you were completely out played though, I just think you don’t know the matchup too well. I would suggest going into training mode and just learning how to beat each of rogs dashpunches. Theres a reason balrog doesn’t get too far in high level play. His gameplan is too linear. If you learn the answers to each of them, you have the match in the bag.
In summary:
- Anti air more
- Apply safer pressure
- Punish better
- EX zonk charged at all times
- Avoid playing footsies
- No focus attacks
I meant no focus attacks unless to bait out unsafe moves in the summary. Also in the third paragraph i meant thay wakeup overhrad you did was a good idea. Meaty overheads are great against him Editing such a big post is a pain on my phone.
A friend of mine posted a replay of us. He has a beast chun li and I’m thinking that matchup is in her favour now. Here it is
It’s actually 5-5 for now, but really its whoever knows the matchup better.
I swear I check these things when I post them and they go bad.
I updated the link in the post and I’m putting it here
