wow. actually you’ve pretty accurate thoughts about your own gameplay and the flaws that come with it. Dunno what anybody could say further about that, you’ll get a feeling how cody “works” with time and experience. for now, I feel you hold back a tard to much without really zoning or a plan you wanna pursue. as cody you want to be in their face 24/7 for the most time against most characters.
You actually seemed to have a good sense of spacing in those videos, however like Zukuu said I think you need to be a bit more aggressive and be the one to get in the opponents face, but I think that will improve with time as you become more comfortable with Cody’s move set and his strategy’s like frame trapping and going for counter hit set ups.
thank you for your kind words even though my cody play is down right horrible in those videos.
can you give me advice on specific things?
-
What is the best way to train for counter hits in training mode? (just set cpu to random block with counterhit on?)
-
what are the safe jump options off of front/back throws and what are the fastest reversals that they are safe from?
Thanks
-
never done that. dunno about others. you could do so and do c.hp, ex rocks on the dummy and on hit u2. the way I register the hit as counterhit is the flashing “counter hit” writing in the corner with the side of my eye. samw with meaty s.hp on wakeup etc.
-
the easierst is off a backthrow. instantly afterwrads hold up forward. with j.hk you beat out / be safe against all 5frame and above reversals. e.g. dudley’s non ex uppercuts, sagat uppercuts (due to his 1 frame slower wakeup speed), gen’s gekiro, cammy’s cannon spike and nearly every ultra etc you can also bait out faster reversals (shoryuken!!111) and be safe if you do a empty jump instead (using no attack). usually followed by a crouch tech OS.
off a forward throw walk a tard (seriously, as soon as he moves one inch) jump forward. with j.hk you do an ambiguous crossup aka the “buttslam”. you’re evading any reversals and if the block normal you cross them up.
Are these guys using turbo or are they the most amazing players ever who will 12901720391 tap the button to ensure it comes out?

my crappy cody! Show me where to improve

This is a prime example of how I lose most of my games. I have no clue how to get my offense started and I get blown up game after game like this. I feel like I haven’t improved in weeks
From the way you’re getting hit nearly every time you get up, it seems to be a combination of you trying to hard to start an offense and lack of match-up knowledge. Cody isn’t Yun. He has to work hard to get in, and struggles to escape pressure. You need to block more, AA or intercept jump ins, and think more whenever you throw a rock- you can’t just throw it whenever something’s not happening since it doesn’t have the start up time most fireballs do. Work more on your overall basics like defense and your neutral game by being more patient and observant before hurrying on to frame traps and conditioning; you’re not gonna be able to make use of Cody’s offense without being able to solidly approach as well as keep the opponent off you.
Thank you, now that you bring that up when I’m on defense I get so anxious to start my offense because I’m aware of how bad Cody’s defense is. It’s like I’m thinking “his defense is horribly i need to get out of this ASAP” and that gets me killed.
First round: anti air. It’s really easy to AA with Cody, don’t ever let someon jump in at you.
Overall: Work on your meter management…don’t toss EX Rocks whenever you get a bar. Not only are you wasting precious butter, but in the situations you used it you never got to mount an offense afterwards…if they block EX Rocks you have such a huge frame advantage that you can at least get an overhead in, or even better stuff if the opponent is smart enough to block the overhead.
Also, work on your strings a bit…stuff like cr.lp, f.mp has a 6 frame gap in between, it’s not something to be tossing out every opportunity you get close.
Santa, what do you use to record your matches? I bought some crap from China that doesn’t work, and I’ve been wanting to make videos for pretty much forever.
Fraps and the PC version of AE. I got it for 360 and PC haha
tell me your budget and I can tell you which quality you can achieve.
Oh ok. I got it for the PC too, but mostly play on Xbox still due to better competition and more consistent quality of matches…I got weird lag issues on the PC because I think people didn’t setup the game properly or had laggy computers, dunno. I even tried making a replay lobby on the Xbox and joining on the PC to record the replays with fraps LOL…wishful thinking.
Well my biggest problem is not being in the US. I think anything up to $ 50 is perfect (I’m fine with 480p quality) and maybe I could stretch to $100 bucks if it’s worth it. I was looking at the hauppage that seems to be the go to option, but not only is it extremely expensive (I think $250), there’s the problem of shipping and taxes, which in my country get to about 60% of the product value.
Sorry for the huge thread derailment lol I promise I’ll try make it worth it if I ever get to record stuff.
for 12 bucks you get various capture stuff, which are all terrible and should be avoided.
dazzle cost’s around 40-50 bucks and does 480p. might be your best choice seeing your budget.
for 100 you should be able to pick up an old (dvd) recording machine and simply “record” what’s goin on your screen, transfering it to your pc afterwards. rather inconveniently tho. newer ones have some sort of usb transfer aswell.
coming around 180 is the 720p Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro. a build in card that doesn’t work on some specific hardware setups.
for 180 aswell you get the best piece imo, but requires an USB 3.0 mainboard. Blackmagic Design Intensity shuttle.
you’ve to be somewhat lucky / need a healthy knowledge to get the hauppauge working flawlessly on your pc. it has a driver problem and the producer has not fixed that in years. of course that isn’t the case for everybody, but many. using old drivers works for some, but not all (including me). might depend on your hardware. for 200 bucks the support is a joke. can’t recommend it.
i have the hauppauge but i can’t say that it wasn’t without its difficulties to get to work to my demands. however it is a great piece of hardware.
if you simply are looking for a device to catpure at 480, get a dazzle. it has a nice price range and does exactly what you want it to do (except it is SD not HD)
Thank god this subject was brought up then, I was seriously considering buying the hauppage lol. I’ve checked prices around here and the Blackmagic Design Intensity shuttle goes for around R$ 1.000,00, which is about U$ 500,00, about half my salary and nearly twice the minimun wage in my country. The dazzle costs as much as the Blackmagic if I could by it without taxes/shipping =( (about U$ 180,00).
Guess I’ll play on the PC more then lol…at least until I can make it to the US someday.
just import the dazzle then. it’s quite small so shouldnt result in a high shipment fee.
yeh I dunno The problem Im having is getting in to do all the nice frame traps he has…and when I do get in I forget what frame trap to use which is why you see me doing cr.lp, f.mp when its actually f.mp, cr.lp etc
What frame traps would you recommend I use most of the time?
Im going to a fighting event in the UK tommorow to just play casuals. I hope to get more tips from other cody players aswell
Here are two videos of my Cody from a tourney this past weekend.
Here is one against an Evil Ryu, never fought one before so pretty much a learning experience. I dropped a lot of anti airs and yeah, probably cost me the match. as well as failed bingo attempts on fireballs etc.

One thing I dont understand. If i do cr lk XX CU FADC, what frame moves will cr HP counter hit on? I try to get my opponents to tech after my FADC, but it seems as if 3 and 4 frame crouch techs are beating my cr HP… does this frame trap really work?
Here is a video against a Sakura, who is arguably the best AE player in our scene. Just straight up better than me. better footsies, better pokes, better execution.
One thing that really loses it for me is when he starts corner pressure with a block string in the corner. Like he will do cr lp x2 and then light tatsu. light tatsu is 0 on block, so i find myself trading at best with his follow up light right after. this pressure is hard for me to deal with. any pointers on how i should approach this matchup?
