Nice knife game. Ibuki’s neckbreaker are all -13 so you can go for bigger punishes. And you got caught by a lot of overheads vs evil ryu
Any pointers from this set please. Specifically with my frame traps. I could not open this deejay up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYf94nn8jb0
I don’t think your problem is the frame traps. You should throw more rocks from full screen IMO. Once he had hit you with at least 1 fireball, Dee Jay really had no reason to go in. You started throwing more rocks in the later sets but not enough. Dee Jay can’t do anything full screen outside of fireballs or inching his way in for a EX sobat kick read. (and on punish, that’s a free ultra or cr.short>whatever.)
If you’re going to frametrap him, you need to be weary of upkicks. He didn’t really challenge your pressure whenever you did get in so he had no real reason to throw it out there. I’d stagger jabs a bit more or throw in more cl.MP. But in order for Cody’s frametraps to really work, at least on charge characters, you need to establish the throw game first. You somewhat had it going in the later sets. I would walk back a bit after a jab or 2 to see if they do anything or if they are looking for a throw. I’d even do it after 1 or 2 successful throws to see if they are scared of the throw or at least expecting you to throw them as you walk up on them.
I know you were trying to punish LK sobat kick with cr.short but i’m going to assume a bit of online play might have played a role. That or just not use to the timing to punish with lk Sobat.
I’d really just bully Dee Jay in the corner and then stay right outside of footsie range or where he can throw a fireball so you can zonk fireballs but still play a decent footsies game to punish whatever he does.
and of course “pick up the knife” helps if you’re going to try and bully him to the corner or in Dee Jay’s face.
I disagree with picking up the knife in this match because you want to keep your focus available in this matchup IMO, it’s a pretty strong threat.
One small thing that is nice to remember in this MU is that as long as there is an air slasher on screen, Deejay can’t do his sobat kicks. They are, for some strange reason, projectile restricted as though they were a fireball. So whenever there is a FB on screen there is no threat of a sobat until that fireball is gone.
crMK is quite nice in this MU because it can go under sobats in neutral and is safe from punish in almost ever scenario.
Thanks for the tips you guys
I normally play SF casually, but i’m really looking to get better so i’m hoping you guys can give my some advice and tips on how I can improve. I just started learning match up’s and working on combo’s. I know most his basic combo’s with the exception of his 1f link s.strong into cr. fierce.
I’m trying to work on my defense which i’m having a bit difficulty improving on. Controlling space and stop jump in’s. How do I know which anti air I should use for a jump in?
Another thing, Chun lI’s spacing gives me a really hard time. Especially her c.roundhouse from max range. any tips?
Last video is private.
Anti airing is a matter of knowing your opponents jump ins and just having experience anti airing them. B+MP is a pretty good catch all anti air, it doesn’t ACTUALLY catch all (it’s pretty bad vs dive kicks and crossups) but it’s the closest Cody has to a catch all. You can rely pretty heavily on it.
Try experimenting with anti airing jump ins in training mode. Record a bot walking back and forth and then doing one or two different jump ins and try and anti air them with different buttons at different spaces.
Okay, last one can be viewed now. Any tips on my replays?
Chun-Li can give Cody alot of trouble because she can keep him at bay quite effectively and dance in and out poke ranges with her walkspeed. You should really work on your whiff punishes, chun’s sweep is good but whiff punishing it is definitely possible. Try looking for signs one might be coming, eg: she starts walking forward, or walks forward/backward real quickly. Pre-emptively walk backwards yourself and use your own sweep to punish hers for example (go into training mode, record the dummy walking backwards/forwards and sweeping. Then look what buttons do well whiff punishing her sweep and practice on timing them.) As a final note, I noticed you were getting counterhit alot by the sweeps, try playing more patiently around midscreen. Chun WILL force you to play footsies. Cody’s terrible backwards walkspeed doesn’t exactly help either, but we’ll have to make do.
Hey all,
Finally starting to get some matches up on YouTube. There are about 5 total I wanted to share, but the 3rd kept failing during the upload process, so finally gave up. Going to try again tonight.
In the meantime, could really use some pointers. Here’s a Guy and a C. Viper vid - I know there is plenty to work on, especially execution. Just trying to figure out if there are things I am missing.
Much appreciated!

(I’d embed, but I have no idea how) D:
Hey fellas! Just had a qualifier yesterday for NorCal Fightclub 2, went 2-2 losing both my matches on stream. Had to make top 6 to qualify but I think I placed somewhere short of that.
My match vs Revolver Sagod (Sagat):
My match against SlimJim (Boxer)
In my first match one of the commentators, Crackfiend, mentions I don’t use all of the great tools Cody has to offer. So with that said, it’d be greatly appreciated to tell me what I’m not using or doing well.
Watching the first video, in your first match i think you did extremely well but what you didn’t use enough imo, is Zonk. Since you didnt even touch that special you let the sagat know “oh hey chuck that plasma all day its cool” which is ok but then you would only approach by focus dashing and not even holding it, just using it to get the range boost. So you made yourself predictable and sagat adapted to that. Your spacing was on point so you could’ve punished his fireballs with zonk knuckle. You have to throw out the normals to challenge his footsies and absorb/zonk fireballs. (Also where was the ultra 2 punishes!)
In the 2nd video, i like the way you’re approaching the balrog matchup but what you could do instead is throw more rocks/fake rock. Again you need to zonk some more, you definitely have the reactions to zonk those max distance straights from balrog. And even if you don’t its not that hard to do it. Against balrog use u1 instead just because you can combo into it. Because if you get the life lead, you can make balrog’s life hell zoning him with fake rock/rocks and zonk, not to mention cody excels midrange with his normals.
As for your cody play, i think you just need to establish the throw game a bit more, then you should start hitting those counterhit fierces into u2 more often.
Should also work on finding ways to use your meter.
You need to Zonk for sure in the sagat match. You did it once and that was it. He was carelessly throwing them at you from mid range and…he kinda could because you gave him no reason to stop. Also a lot of careless jumping (and he made sure to punish them in some form.) Really just need to walk Sagat down and block the tiger shots. The chip isn’t that crazy. Once you’re in that mid range, have the zonk ready for projectiles.
as for Rog, I dunno about U1 in that match. U2 is fine especially if you’re getting the OS setups for U2 on CH or if you slide under headbutt. But that’s me. U2 is better in this match as opposed to U1 IMO. Zonking straights is another thing here. (but you did fine really keeping him in check with Focuses so not really all that crazy.) You should have won the match against Balrog though.
more matches:
Good stuff. Observations from the Poison match:
- Anti-airing was really strong. Didn’t notice her getting a single free jump-in.
- You got caught by her stand throw on her wake-up a few times (at least I think it was this match, might have one of the others from YouTube). Whenever that happens to me I start going for meaty cr.lp instead.
- One game that you won you could have finished with either a heavy ruffian fadc combo or red focus U2 rather than putting yourself at risk with the jump-into-corner throw. In the last game you could have taken a huge life lead (and gotten the post ultra hkd) by spending the bar after a t.mp connected, although I suppose that one was more of a judgement call.
- She kept doing meaty fireball dash forward - I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure that’s not safe if you wake up with EX CU.
- She was also abusing backdash after blocked rekka something criminal. I think once you’ve seen enough of this to get the read it’s worth throwing out raw EX RK to make her think twice.
- That was really unlucky on the cr.hp with the knife > U2. Looked like the timing was spot on!
Feel free to disagree with anything - I’m just going on that one vid, I don’t know how often you play against this opponent so maybe there’s player-vs-player stuff going on that I’m not aware of.
Meaty Fireball - Dash Forward can trade depending on timing. Her HP Fireball is active for 40F a trade with HP Fireball is a bad trade too, you wont get enough frame advantage to combo, you’ll do less damage than you take (Her fireball is 70 damage vs EX CU’s 60 on first hit) and you burned a meter. Not sure if the timing she was using would trade or not but it does carry risk is all I’m saying.
I think you might want to lay off the knife a bit Shin, most of the time you were taking as much or more damage than you were dealing whenever you got the knife. The biggest advantage seemed to be that Poison didn’t have a good read on the range of jumping attacks with the knife. Btw, jMP has more reach than jLP but of course MP is only active 3F so it’s a lot harder to time. A lot of your damage was coming from throws and of course you weren’t going for throws when you had the knife. Still worth picking up, just thought you were doing it a bit too much at least vs Poison.
In the dudley matchup you were doing farLP and tagging a bunch of stuff but that’s only 30 damage, you should buffer that to MK Ruffian when you’re doing it at the ranges you were.
I am by no means an expert, as I’m sure you all know, but if you had finished you combo with a lp CU into an ex CU at the end of that first game, I’m pretty sure it would have killed. I mean, you had plenty of meter… I try to end my corner combos with that, as long as I have a spare bar.
That ex bingo fadc hk ruffian in the corner to corpse hop in that first dudley match was sexy.
Nice matches, thanks for uploading! I learn a lot from watching you guys.
forgot one actually
and yea these matches were mainly just from anger at how I did at NEC over the weekend so instead of sitting back doing loads of downbacking or respecting my opponent, I just started going in. But I appreciate all the callouts and tips.
as for the poison fireball setup, I didn’t want to take the risk since it was HP. If he did the MP version then yea it’d be an actual meaty. For the throw game, I always tell people I can’t see throws in this game and I don’t get into the habit too much for crouch techs.
the far.lp in the dudley match def sat in my head when I connected them and didn’t buffer.
Hey y’all I am trying to better my Cody level and need some critique from y’all high level Cody players!
My Gamertag is Gucci Durag and I guess I have some replays on youtube that people upload. I’ll post my losses.
