Iād also try focusing more. Psycho wasnāt mixing up dash punches with armor breaking punches and only went for an overhead once. Not one TAP either. At least focus to catch a few dash punches to let him know he canāt just bully you with them.
Iām with eternal on throwing more rocks. didnāt throw any until 2nd match first round and that was when you were down in life.
Donāt back yourself into the corner so easily. You gave up a lot of space very quickly and lost in the corner. Which is where Balrog wants you.
Yea youāre right about focus attacking the rush punches and backing to the corner Shin. I think I was too preoccupied with trying to punish rush punches with Zonk instead of looking at my other options during the match now that I look back at the video numerous times.
Another tip is to know when you should give up dmg for screen control/hard knockdown. Shoulda done some lk/mk ruffian enders here and there to get him to the corner quicker or put him in a mixup. I know itās hard in the heat of the moment but itās also good to just head back to character select screen to take a quick breather and review what went wrong. I noticed Psycho went for a lot of preemptive pokes, heād always do crouch jab > cr.mk/cr.mp so that if you dash into it he can easily confirm, it happened in the first match after he had already won one. When you realize theyāre pressing buttons preemptively and not on reaction thatās your time to whiff punish normals.
But GGās! I like the reaction on the trade fierce, good awareness!
in regards to follow ups off of mk ruffian, what do u use?
how about off of Hp criminal upper?
Iāve seen sasaki do double dash into cr lp or double dash into hp/cr hp (not sure) but when I try this, if my opponent doesnāt quick rise, im not sure how to follow up.
Looking for ways to continue safe pressure off of mk ruffian, hp criminal upper as those are my most typical combo enders with no meter.
\
Well both enders cause soft knockdowns so there really isnāt any way to follow up should they quick rise. Sasaki just double dashes to get back in their face and restart pressure. If they donāt quick rise Iād walk in and out of their reversal range and just see what they do when youāre in that range. If they donāt reversal, apply pressure, if they do, bait and keep in mind that your opponent is willing to reversal on wake up.
Iāve been doing dash>cr.MK off MK ruffian seeing itās a meaty if they quick rise and if it hits, free cr.LK>whatever you want.
Off HP Upper, I either throw meaty rocks>LK ruffian, throw meaty rocks and nothing, or just dash forward to keep the pressure going. Depending on the character though, throwing rocks afterwards isnāt meaty (for example, Honda can U1 through it.) Some characters will be at a distance where their ultra wonāt hit or youāll recover in time though.
Anyway since iāve moved back to Maryland, iāll probably be playing more offline and getting more matches recorded since the scene is still alive up here. Coin up has a weekly on mondays and recorded the matches:
As you can see, I had to go through mainly Chuns lol. The last match I goofed and switched to Guy when I really shouldnāt have but I donāt mind. I need to get familiar with Guy during tournaments anyway. Otherwise if I sticked with Cody Iām sure I wouldāve won. I dropped a lot of combos and iām sure some of that is because of me switching sticks constantly and going back and forth from octo to square gate and seimitsu to sanwa. Not really an excuse but iām sure some of that plays a role.
I just gave it a shot just cause. Itās not like Chun has anything super scary and I personally have really bad reactions to Chun due to not playing enough good ones.
W covers both bases for Cody if theyāre jump happy or doing badly spaced fireballs. Granted I didnāt use ultra at all and during the match/looking at them again there were many instances I could have done either Ultra but didnāt or did B+MP. Itās one of those matches I donāt think it really matters which ultra you choose because youāre generally going to be matching Chun for buttons rather than punishes.
Hey guys, Portuguese Cody player here. First time posting, long time lurking (Iām finally posting, Eternal! xD).
About a month ago we had our major tournament (Lockdown) here in Portugal. Got to play FSPās Rufus and OrkanOneās Dhalsim on the first day and managed to get out of my pool still in winners. These are some of my matches from the top8 on the 2nd day, which went better than expected, given that I was dropping everything and playing a little sloppy during these matches xD.
31:00 vs Afonso (Portugal - Gen. My training partner. Still donāt understand what happened at 38:54 after I jumped. That was supposed to be F+HK, by the way)
1:09:00 vs Templar (Italy - Sagat)
1:35:55 vs MetallicMike (UK - Juri)
Biggest suggestion would be to practice your combos with the training mode dummy on ārandom blockā you dropped a lot of combos. Also vs Gen I personally would go for more focus attacks, his armor breaker is Hands which requires a piano input so it usually requires him to whiff a normal. Donāt over do it but itās worth using more. Also doing closeHP - crHP on counterhit or meaty is something you never landed but had tons of opportunities.
Also need to practice your spacing on EX Ruffian, but thatās a common problem for almost all Codyās since it runs out of active frames well before the move stops moving and you have to do the move so preemptively.
Thanks for the tips Eternal. Youāre right, I should really get my execution on point in the training mode. And yeah, I missed so many cl.HP->cr.HP counterhit chances itās not even funny. xD
Iāll also try to go for throws more often, itās something Iāve been told more than once now. Sometimes I end up losing myself in my own blockstrings and forgetting to throw, making my throw/trap game not very effective.
I feel the Adon matchup is my kryptonite for some reason. Anything I could have done remotely better? I did punish some of his Jaguar Kicks but I felt like I missed a lot of punishes.
Too proactive with some of your moves, especially the HK Ruffians. Wait till you actually see the jump before doing the HK Ruffian, not only is a trade slightly in your favor (Air jag is 80 damage while HK Ruffian is 100) but it also can potentially lead to a MK Ruffian or even a F+HK - EX Criminal Upper followup on trade.
chuck more rocks mid to full screen. Adon didnāt have U1 and the worse he could have done was full screen Jaguar kick. (which you can slide on reaction.)
Zonk helps a lot against Adon. If youāre holding it and see a Jaguar tooth, let it fly. Also tags Adon if heās throwing out s.HK. s.HP also does pretty good against Jaguar tooth.
More Cody matches. I see my execution is pretty shitty lately along with not punishing a lot of stuff. I havenāt been playing as much lately along with constantly swapping between Square and Octo gates. (with a bit of my silent button semitsus and default sanwas on other playerās sticks.) Still worth a watch though.
