"You can do better than that!" Critique my Cody!

Video from canada cups, salty suite at evo. At about the 20 minute mark is my mm against andreas (no.1 euro rufus)
Enjoy!
P.s. unfortunately I was a bit intoxicated at the time of this match, but it did make the whole thing a lot more fun, hahaha

Nice Cody.
Btw you got in a lot of cross up Fierces in that match. Are you doing a specific setup or do you just know the spacing really well?

First round when I hit him with the j. Fierce clean, I kinda tok a note of that and just tried to make it as ambiguous as possible, no set up, lol… be a lot cooler if I did hahaha

Ah oh well :frowning:
Still a great match though. I have trouble against high level rufus players

The only advice I have is stand jab that dive kick pressure and do a better job of baiting ex messiah than I did, lol… easier said than done for sure, but I feel like this match up is very winnable for cody.

But for sure I used to think this match up and akuma were fucking nasty for cody… akuma still is in my book

Hey guys, I’m about to stream some matches against my friend Xsk_Samurai. Come check it out and critique my Cody. I definitely need some pointers.

Ah man, didn’t recognize your handle. I’ve already seen you play at Xsk_Samurai’s stream. Can’t watch it right now, but if you upload a match or two, I’ll definitely check it out.

EDIT: Nevermind. I’ll watch the whole of it at some point. I was planning on working on Cody’s cl.Mk on wakeup to bait stand throws, but it looks like you already have some setups for that.

@ADN - They weren’t really true "setups. I just did the cl.mk as they’re waking up to create that small gap where if they try to stand tech they get punished hard.

I haven’t re-watched the entire archives yet, but I did pick up a few things right away.

[]I miss alot of anti-airs because of the way I charge my zonk. I charge it with HP, which removes my far st.hp as an anti-air, and it makes it awkward to hit the HK button for anti-airs as well. I think that is something I just need to work on so that it feels more natural.
[
]I have a bad habit of charging a FA after blocking Ryu’s cr.mk. My friend is good enough to punish those when I get predictable.
[*]I missed my cl.mp link to cr.hp too often. I’ll have to practice that some more in training mode.
[/LIST]
There’s a few more things I noticed, but it might be too situation specific to bring up. Please, break me down and let me know what I’m doing incorrectly. I look forward to what you guys come back with.

hello everyone!!! trying to level up my cody game. i know i need to work on my aa’s for sure but please any advice would be helpfuloh and sorry for the shaky cam. working on getting a new way to record my fights

Just a little sparring with my little brother. any tips?

Get another sparring partner, this doesn’t make any sense at all this way.

Fairly new to Cody, played this guy online and thought I did well. What can I do to improve? (Besides finishing off combo’s and work on my links, been working on that quite a lot the past days)

Better whiff punishes, more careful spacing on your c.MK (a number of times it was used at a range where if the Guy player had been on his game he could have punished you on hit or block, notably at 0:28s where you were around -5F and Guy could have easily tagged you with a crouching LP or crouching LK.)

The combo you seem to be going for but dropping doesn’t work anyway, cr-LP cr-LP cr-MP - HK Ruffian whiffs because HK Ruffian only hits standing opponents and you were doing it on crouching opponents a lot of the time.

Better meter management. HK Ruffian - FADC - EX Ruffian is only 230 damage. You can get over 300 by doing HK Ruffian - FADC - F-HK - EX Criminal Upper.

A little bit better mix up game on the opponents wake up. NEVER do walk forward - overhead because Cody’s overhead is extremely telegraphed already and has a huge hurtbox. If you are going to do an overhead on their wake up try doing walk backward a little bit like you are spacing a crossup then do overhead. Or do walk back and forth a little and do a meaty c.LK on their wakeup. After a few c.LKs do the exact same sort of bobbing and weaving on their wakeup but instead do an overhead.

That Adon is probably the best Adon in France and it’s my first time actually playing him and damn! he knows the match up. Playing him I feel like, if Adon plays this lame, the match is not that much in Cody’s favor anymore. Also, I was always keeping a zonk charged but they did not seem to come out (it wasn’t the most lagless match :/). I know he shouldn’t be abusing it, but he was able to. Apart from that, have at it. </span></font></div>

@ADN<div><br></div><div>Let me start off by saying you did very well. One thing I suggest is try utilizing the fake rock more. Especially in the Adon MU. He noticed you never did fake rock and was buffering EX jaguar tooth from the mid-range. I believe his NJ.HK will beat out b.mp and c.mk so don’t press buttons unless your confident enough in your reactions to HK ruffian where it will beat it clean, trade at best whether you react fast enough (if you react too slow his nj.HK will beat the start up of HK ruffian). Don’t hesitate to press buttons in Adon’s face! (of course be smart about it) but those moments where you both crouched in each others face and did nothing is the moment you should take your opponents hesitation to your advantage (throw a jab, walk up throw, tick-throw) </div><div><br></div><div><span class=“Apple-tab-span” style=“white-space:pre”> </span>Now the best spacing I believe for Cody to be is within max range of sweep or s.HK. </div><div>1.) If he takes the risk of neutral jumping just react accordingly with s.HK</div><div>2.) NJ jaguar tooth = c.mk (you will either beat his jaguar tooth or end up on the other side)</div><div>3.) cr.lp buffers will beat out his s.hk clean; or you can cr.mk under his s.hk and reset the situation and spacing.</div><div><br></div><div>Staying and fighting for that range neutralizes alot of Adon’s options. You did good in the other sets, Cody mirrors don’t sweat, you already know everything you should be doing. He just so happened to mix you up more, he was doing things like empty jump CU. If you predict him using EX criminal upper tick jab and neutral jump and come down with your punish combo. (NJ.HP > s.HP > cr.mp > HP CU at the very least; if your confident with links, momochi combo after the NJ.HP) </div><div><br></div><div>And everything about Chun in the cody MU board very much still applies in ae2012. bait her spinning bird kick and punish. </div><div><br></div><div>there’s probably more i’m forgetting to say, i’ll edit if anything else comes up. GG’s ADN! very fun watching your play.</div>

<div>^ Mostly what Canadian said. I thought you played quite well. </div><div><br></div>I think you got a little EX Zonk and Focus Attack happy. Understandable, because I can get that way myself lol. I recall you losing a match against Chun because you tried to EX zonk through her pressure or something twice in a relatively short period of time. <div><br></div><div>But all and all good play. Your combos seemed on point. Outside of the EX Zonks, your defense was quite solid, and you weren’t letting people jump in for free. </div>

Ah! Cheers guys. I must say, I was kinda nervous and I don’t think I played my best. But that Adon match, I don’t think I was ready for it anyway.<div><br></div><div>Thanks for the input. </div><div><br></div><div>EDIT: yeah, that zonk was a gamble I took out of frustration haha. </div>

<div>1.) I need you to walk back and forth, wiggle outside of his sweep range and either crouch and block or whiff punish/ if you see an opening get in close with f.mp and start pressure. be creative with that.
