"You can do better than that!" Critique my Cody!

Hey guys, SEOUL RYOKU here on XBL.

I used to main Vega since vanilla and HDR but used to play around with Cody in super, ended up quitting Vega for Cody just before 2012 came out.
Started getting around 4-5k BP 1.2-2k PP. I can’t seem to get out of this gap. I think a few of my problems are using ex zonk and ex ruffian too much.
A big problem of mine is teching grabs, people tell my I have to delay my crouch techs but I cant seem to do it right now and keep eating those grabs all day.
Any advice? Things I can do more, things to practice and try to stay away from. I also seem to have trouble with certain matchups, balrog, bison, viper, ken.
Any other frame traps I should be using more?

Thanks!

I’ll give some advice. Might be the only advice you get lol. I’m going to tell the bad first. I can recognize some of your bad habits because they are mine too.

Hit confirms: You’re not hit confirming. I mean you are, but the hits are getting blocked and you do a finisher anyway. Sometimes you got lucky and the finisher connected. You weren’t getting punished hard enough for those either, so you got away with murder. Blocked criminal upper is a free ultra, as are ruffians.

Zonk - waaaaaay too much. Random zonks, anti air ex zonks (not a reliable AA at all).

Anti Airs - non existent. Cody has good anti airs. Use them. B+MP, st. HP, HK ruffian, etc.

Meter management - also non existent lol. You throw out ex rocks at people on wake up with almost full health. Is that tiny chip worst one bar? Just do regular rocks. You can do a safe ruffian right after them. Random ex zonks and ruffian kicks. There was one round I think against Dudley or Gen, you had no health, he had full life and you wasted your one bar on a zonk. Chances are that round was lost and you had another to go. Keep the meter and try to win the round back if you can without it until you need it.

Oh, and vs Blanka, ultra 2 all day. Punishes on block, on hit and it punishes damn near every thing he does.

Now the good:
Combos - solid combos. On jump in, mix in jump attack, st. MP, cr LK xx criminal upper. It’s better than the lpx2 cr lk xx criminal upper. You even got a 1 framer or two.

Pressure: Your pressure is also good. Keep doing what your doing, but don’t get crack kick happy. For only being where you are pp wise, its solid.

Ah the advice i was looking for! Thanks! That really helps o: yeah i have really bad habits and need to break them. I really have to work on meter management especially. Thanks for the help!

Hey, well done. I’ve played Skatan once and he is a beast, and that match up is annoying as hell. If I were you I would delay my tech throws even more (sometime not even attempt to) and not attempt anything until I have a bar.
Don’t use that crack kick too much. In this MU, I only use it after the Sakura player whiffs a cr.Mk or a St.Hk: in order to get in safely.
Apart from that, you know your ranges and your pokes. Just remember to anti-air when you play footsies. Often times, people focus to much in their spacing, buffering their normals etc. and they forget there anti-airs.

Also, do me a favor and go to more tournaments!

Thank you for your feedback! I really appreciate it!!
Just a question, what do you mean by “not attempt anything until I have a bar” ? why would a bar maket it better to attempt a delayed tech-throw?

Yeah, I need to stop trying to use crack kick too much, the problem is that the people I play with don’t know how to handle it so I’ve developed the bad habit of abusing it. Will try to keep in mind to reduce my use of it! thanks!

Yes! that’s one of my biggest problems it seems. I usually focus on either anti-airing or playing ground footsies…any tips on how to improve that? just keep grinding?

Thanks! I will actually go to the next qualifier which is held in another city in about two weeks!. After this tournament I feel the urge to go to every tournament, this shit is addicting!

It is addictive indeed.

Now, regarding your meter. When you’re being pressured by Sakura, I think you should delay your tech throws even further than usual. I’d rather get thrown than get hit by cr.HP into tatsu - it just does too much more damage than a throw. Try to Ex zonk through her pressure game. Just don’t get predictable. That’s it I think.

Playing footsies should also involve staying at a spot where you can easily anti-air. The thing is, if someone jumps on you at the moment you threw a normal out, most people would rather block instead of anti-airing - especially since Cody doesn’t have the most invincible moves such as a shoryuken for example. Now, you were mostly zoning with cr.lp and st lp, moves that both leave you enough time to recover from them and anti-air with Jaw Crusher or Ruffian Kick.
I guess you just have to remember that people might jump on you and anti-air fearlessly.

So, good luck for the next qualifier and don’t hesitate to post other videos.

PS : If you face Skatan again, be sure to try and learn the unblockable setup that Cody has on Sakura haha =)

For learning footsies, try your best to avoid jumping. Stick to walking around and using spacing. Don’t be afraid to throw a rock at close range once or twice either. If they jump over your rock and punish the first time, it means they’re eager to jump and you should punish them for that.

Thanks! yes, I should try and delay my techs even further. A throw is way better than sakuras crazy damage output.
I’ve been more focused on Anti-airing while I’m zoning now and it’s getting better, but still not good enough. I’ll keep working on it!
I found out that the next qualifier will have two good sagats and a good Abel. Match-ups I’m not really familiar with so I’m a little scared about those. Abel really gets me because of the safe-jump setups not working due to his EX TT. I feel like I can’t really pressure him like I want.

Oh I would love to learn the unblockable agaisnt Sakura? Is it different from the EX-RK - Dash Dash - j.hp?
What thread should I read here that has most of this technology? sakura unblockable and such?

Thanks!

On defense, you really want to switch things up. Delayed crouch tech is a mostly safe option but good opponents catch that and get huge reward for punishing it (as you probably know from playing cody lol), because you usually land hp frame traps rather than the cr.lp ticks of tighter frame traps. Mixing up between mashing jabs (3 frames), stand throwing and delayed crouch tech is the best chice.

Regarding abel, you can still safe jump him even when he has bar for ex-tt. Just delay the jump slightly so that you don’t land in the active frames, his other reversals aren’t fast enough. You won’t be able to os ex-roll with a later jump in, so you should OS against backdashes when he has bar. After blocking a step kick, remember ex ruffian is throw invul and lk ruffian is airborne from frame 1 so throws wiff and normals will cause you to reset.

For sagat, just a quick note that his wakeup timing is different so iirc the usual safe jump from backthrow doesn’t work. Plus you slide under him after ex ruffian, making also most setups not work. I know momochi does backdash, s.lp (wiff), j.hp but I’m not sure if that’s an unblockable (i could never get it to work as such) or just a tricky jumpin that makes tiger uppercut wiff.

The only other sakura setup I know of is the other corner ex rk, that seems pretty universal: f.hk, ex rk, backdash, forward dash, j.hp.

I did not know about that corner unblockable o_O I need to test that out, although the timing makes me think that she can probably cr.HP on wakeup. I was referring to this setup:

Against Sagat, the safe jump after backthrow works perfectly. Momochi’s setup after Ex RK is not an unblockable. It’s just a 50/50 mix-up. Also, I’ve found an unblockable on him after that very same knockdown, just haven’t had time to record and upload it (it’s also super easy to pull off).

It’s not an unblockable, didn’t mean to type that. It’s just another way to setup the exact same thing that happens with the ex rk, double dash, j.hp (fake crossup or mk for an actual crossup).

Sup guys. I’m new here!
I’ve started up a series I like to call: “Leveling Up My Cody”. And what better way to get it under way then to post it here among my fellow Codians?

PLEASE leave ANY criticism, here or in the comments on Youtube.

PS: I chose replays to start with because I’m not sure I should do live commentary or not. The quality might be slightly bad because i accidently recorded in 50 FPS lol.

Why the fuck did it upload as 360p only? Jesus…

@ADN @otori

Thanks for the tips both of you guys have given me.

I was at the qualifier this friday and unfortunately I lost and came in 3rd place…
I won all my matches leading up to Winners Finals, then I lost in winners finals and loosers finals and was out, just like that.
Videos of the matches I lost will probably be up next week or something, I’ll post them then.

As it turns out, the sagat players were not that big of a threat as I beat both of them 2-0.
But there was an El Fuerte player that’s really good, his name is GonZa and hi hasn’t been playing in tournaments for about 2 years and people tought he had quit playing. So I wasn’t prepared for the match-up at all (as you will see in the video)
Anyway, I hope you guys can give me some tips when it comes to the Fuerte match-up after I post the video so you can see what I did wrong. (I got owned pretty bad, didn’t win a single round)

The loosers finals match was against my friend who plays Honda. He is really good and we always trade wins. Last qualifier I beat him in loosers finals so not really much I need to learn about that match-up besides just leveling up my game in general to be able to beat him more consistently.

Anyways, just wanted to thank you guys for all the help leading up to the tournament
I’ll probably go to another qualifier in about 2 months… this tournament stuff is so much fun

No problem dude. Hopefully you’ll know stuff about match-ups I’m not comfortable with.

Lotuzyo > First of all, where those matches laggy? Neither you, nor your opponents seem to be able to punish stuff.
Speaking of punishes, you have got to deal the maximum damage when you can. When that Ryu whiffed that HP dp, you should have punished him with ultra for the win. Same for that Gen who whiffed a dp and then grabbed you (that is why I’m asking about lag).
Please don’t use cr.lk the way you use it. It’s fine if it comes out whilst teching, but you have got to either grab, use your cr.lp to frame trap or just block and retreat. That Cammy got hit by a million of them in a row but that normally shouldn’t work (but all of her play-style was nonsensical).
Don’t forget to anti-air. You pressed cr.lk against that Cammy when she jumped at you… Also, at the end of the first round, when you hit someone with Ex Zonk, you can ultra 2 to finish them off.

Yeah obviously its laggy online but it’s not an excuse! I know about the U2 after Ex Zonk, check inputs, i just messed up :D!

About the cr.lk… it has become a bad habit of mine which Im not really sure how to get rid off… I usually go for it when im pressuring, and sometimes it works and sometimes the mk.ruffian comes out and I get punished for it. About the anti-air cr.lk, that was probably just some weird stuff going on, im actually pretty decent with AA st.hk and jawbreaker.

Thanks for the Pointers ADN, I will try and work on em.

Hi guys I was wondering if you could please critique my friend’s Cody. He doesn’t go on SRK too much (so I understand) and I wanted to show him how helpful and useful the community here and site is. These are offline match videos. THANKS!

Anyone?

From those clips it looks like he’s putting himself in the corner a lot, whether by walking backwards or using jump back + attack or occasionally just jumping over his opponents head into the corner! Rufus landed two corner ultras as a result. He seems to throw out EX Criminal Upper a lot, which is probably not the best use of meter given that it’s a pretty poor reversal. A couple of blocked headbutts were punished very lightly. One of the rounds versus Balrog could have been finished with U2 after EX Zonk. In general, it seems like he’s playing Cody quite passively rather than pressuring his opponents.

Me vs a fairly decent Dhalsim. Any advice is much appreciated.

Punish jumping heavy punch limbs with cr.mk
It looks like you get a little too impatient with jumping in a lot and throwing out your ultras
This Dhalsim seems to be very offensive with his teleports but im not sure what is a good answer for them (maybe ex CU?)

Overall you just have trouble getting in really. Once you are, you have good OS and pressure

That’s all I got really
