When Cody gets close he has to start worrying about TK and TU, cr.lp and st.mk, it involves some small risks from sagat’s but the pay off is usually huge since it leads to a lot of damage and puts Cody back at a further range.I do agree that this match up is only 5.5 but it seems everyone on this forum thinks this match up is very even or in Cody’s favor when it clearly is not, it involves a lot more guesses and risks then most of Cody’s other match ups.
“Worrying about TU” isn’t really that bad unless you’re playing a rago Sagat that will just TU at any given moment. You can solve the whole reversal issue with delayed throws, delayed frame traps, safe jumps and simply blocking. TK can be reacted to with c.MK which goes under it (or stuffs it) and allows you to punish with c.LP, c.LK or s.LP which can be converted into 300+ damage just for reacting to one TK.
The Sagat shouldn’t be choosing when to use c.LP because the Cody player should be frame trapping him all day. As I said in my previous post, just abuse c.LP (OS into MK Ruffian or EX Ruffian) because it beats everything and that includes all of Sagat’s pokes. His s.MK will easily get beaten by Cody’s c.LP and it’s also up to you to whiff punish Sagat’s attempts to keep you out with his normals and Cody has a better time doing that than Sagat. Which is why it’s difficult for Sagat when Cody finally gets in.
The only risk Cody takes in this mathup is getting in, the rest is mostly universal risks (frame trap, throws etc.).
What’s amazing to me is how most of the members on this forum think Cody beats M.Bison lol. Cody does not win that matchup, it’s slightly Bison’s favour more than anything.
You have to be a mind reader to react to a well placed TK with cr.mk. The whole point is that the Sagat player has loads of options that he might use that can beat cr.mk. Another problem with this is that it can be baited and has to done with perfect timing to avoid it from trading or getting beat completely. If what you mean by close is directly in front of Sagat then I would agree that cr.lp being a good option, but it is extremely risky to be doing it from anywhere further than that, and even at that range a sagat with meter to burn is going to make it difficult to apply pressure.
If you know the Cody/Sagat matchup you should always be ready for a TK, there’re ranges where Sagat can do a safe TK and at that range you should be ready for the TK. You don’t have to be a mind reader at all, if you haven’t seen some Sagat matches already, just look at some matches with shotos and Sagat’s in Vanilla. Most of the top players were ready for the TKs even if it was the first one, you just gotta learn the matchup.
The worst that could happen when attempting to whiff the TK is that you time your c.MK wrong and so you run into the first hit of the TK, other then that you’ll always beat it or whiff it.
With the c.LP OS buffer it’s not supposed to be used at point blank range because you’re buffering a special into it if it connects, which means it’s to be done outside of poke range. And it isn’t risky in any way at all to abuse c.LP OS, there’s practically nothing any opponent can do about it. It’s safe and abusable and very useful and should be used often, not just in the Sagat matchup but many others as well.
A Sagat with meter means you bait it. Like I said, to deal with the reversal side of things just delay your strings, throws and/or simply block to bait it. Of course you’ll get hit with a reversal once in a while but so will Sagat with your EX Zonk or EX CU all that means is you take your time to get in again.
What if the sagat kara DP’s or does ex TS?
Even if these options were to be blocked they still give sagat great positional advantage since the fireballs will push you back and Fadc Dp allows him to create space, granted the cody player could have a zonk charged or might be able to react with ex ruffian, but it goes back to my previous point that it’s all about guessing and taking the nessary risks.I Personally think that in these situation it’s a lot easier for the Cody player to end up with being hit rather than Sagat.
Excuse me, just need to insert something here. I thought this was a thread on critiquing people’s Cody’s? Not discussing match-ups? There’s another thread for that. Unless all of these discussions on the Sagat match-up is directed at me of course…since the last video posted was my match against a Sagat and all…
That was a sick match. Not too much I can falter really. Mostly because you’re cody is much better than mine. Zonking was on point.
Good Point…So basically what im saying. I think the match you played was fine, the random standing/crouching attacks in the beggining of R1 were fine, because you were playing it safe not to get uppercutted, and you were trying to get in there and bully him. Thats what I think. Im not saying cody is the type of char u be patient with, but hes also not for gunz blazing against a char with strong anti air capabilities.
Damn that was a very good match, love to see more cody’s beasting
Dude you did awesome!, in the second round of the second match, you had him in the corner, and you were tossin rocks and doin alot of tornadoes. you were bullying him and sometimes thats what cody needs to do for the win. good job man. towards the second half of the video you started doing more criminal uppers and those work a lot of the times since this guy liked to jump a lot.
Just started recording, mind the low volume.

Sup guys, I’m a longtime Cody player who pretty much just lurked these forums, but hope to add some valid input, strategies, and overall knowledge on Cody for everyone. My track record includes 25th atFinal RoundXIV and also one of the only Cody’s to make it out of pools at EVO 2k11 as well as multiple top placings in my home state of Texas. Not trying to brag or anything, I have much work to do to get better, but just saying, I’m capable with the character haha.
Anyways, I have multiple videos that I’m sure you guys would love critiquing but this is my latest video that I’m eager to get your opinions on. I’ve watched it multiple times, agonized over my impatience at the end, the dropped f.strong, cl.strong, low fierce, ex ruffian combo (uggggh) and how silly I was in my spacing game at times while playing footsies against Rose but yeah, I’d love some input on the match and look forward to collaborating with you guys.

P.S. Fanboy rant. Packz, I’ve been watching your videos for a long while, and feel obligated to congratulate you on your success in Europe. If I dare say it, I feel like we have similar styles of play. Footsie based, spacing dependent Cody’s so I feel like I can relate. Here’s hoping I can have the same sort of success here in the good ol USA.
P.P.S. Here’s another semi-recent video against my sparring partner/mentor in tournament. Cody/Fei Long.
Awesome matches. Those wiff punishes are fucking amazing.
While I really admire and respect that style of gameplay, I think you can improve your close up offense with frame traps and all. This could just be me influenced by that 1h video of momochi in Canada Cup lol.
You’re still leagues ahead of me…keep posting videos if you can.
Thanks man. I do need to increase/ finetune my offensive pressure. I tend to get stuck in a footsie game since honestly I believe Cody’s footsies are highly underrated amongst the cast but need to play more to his proper strengths in terms of frame traps and just general offensive pressure. Work in progress haha. I’ll definitely post some more videos as time goes on. Look forward to sharing ideas and matches with you guys.
First time posting videos of myself as Cody. I picked up Cody over the summer (followed by a break from September until 2012, unfortunately), so I’m about 3 months in with Cody. Could really use some tips on how to play better, keep pressure, etc. I have a few videos. I need overall tips on cleaning up my game and being better at the jailbird.

I realize I got no critique on ^ those three matches above, but here are a few more that might help analyze my play. I really want help on the Cammy beating I took (above). Such a hard match for me.

Made an alt account (SleepingSpider) to see how far I could get in ranked with Cody. Got up to 2600pp, so not to shabby.
Since the coming of AE i’ve been trying to take it a bit more seriousely, and although it’s my first post i would still like some feedback on these matches. I would like to give back something before i ask of things, but unfortunately i don’t think i’m up there yet at all. These were just some endless matches, experimenting here and there but it shows my overall play the best i think.

I play alot against this Cammy player, so that might explain a few of my pre-emptive moves.

As far as I can tell, you have an amazing footsie game, but you play the footsie battle too much. You’re fighting Fei Long who arguably has the best footsies in the game, but you’re trying win with only footsies. That’s not a battle you’re going to win if both players are even. You need to get in there and exploit Fei’s 5f DP with safe jumps (which you screwed up, but hey it’ll come with time.). The same thing happened vs Rose. I feel like Rose has just plain better footsies. You also look like you get tired of playing footsies; they’re staying patient longer than you. They’re beating you at your own game. Cody can play footsies great, but once he gets the knockdown, he can rush down even better.
Hey guys, i just recently got an hdpvr and i am now finally uploading my cody matches as well as other games but mostly fighting. i would appreciate constructive criticism on my matches =) anyways thanks for taking the time to read this enjoy. heres the link to my new youtube…
http://www.youtube.com/soulifide most definitely expect new content almost every day
Hi guys!
I’ve been playing Cody on and off since SSFIV came out. Just playing online mostly and with my friends, nothing serious.
But in January there was a qualifier for the swedish national tournament here in my city so I decided to go since it was free to enter.
Before I knew it I found myself in the finals against SkatanMilla (TruthFaceSkatan) who is one of the best swedish players.
It was my first tournament so I was pretty f-n nervous which is why I dropped combos that I shouldn’t drop.
I would LOVE to hear from you pro-cody players about what I can do to improve my cody.
I madly respect you all and I’ve watched maaany of your videos Packz. I’m not sure it was you but I’ve might’ve actually had the pleasure to play against you once when I was in London last year, obviously I got bodied (in Casino, before AE came out on consoles)
Match starts at 7.50
