No one really seems to play Sim online on Live, which is frustrating, since it means that most people don’t know the match-up well, and when I win, I always have that lingering thought in the back of my mind that I only won because they didn’t know how to deal with Sim’s BS, and not because I was any good.
Nowadays, people seem less and less willing to experiment with mid and low-mid tier characters, specially in Championship mode. Seems Sagat and Ryu have become a comfort zone for most players, with Balrog in a close third. Unlike those characters, Sim is not very ‘pick-up-and-play’ friendly. He’s not a technical character like Viper or Gen, but he requires solid knowledge of matchups, spacing and mind-games, as well as tons of patience. Add to that the fact that, well, he’s a weird bald dude who is basically wearing a diaper and it’s not hard to see why he’s so unpopular.
Hell, he is top-tier in ST/HDR and even there he’s pretty rare. It’s bound to be even less frequent to face him in this game since he is mid-tier at best. He’s definitely at the bottom of the popularity charts, along with El Fuerte, Gen, Fei Long and Rose. Surprisingly, I’ve faced very few Rufuses, even though he’s crazy good in this game and pretty easy to use compared to other characters. His being morbidly obese probably turns a lot of people off him.
But with a good connection, online seems to work as a nice practice for random attacks, I just picked up sim so I feel like all practice is good practice.
Dhalsim is not an offensive rush down character, he’s mainly all about tricks and surprises and keeping his distance. Sure you have IAT and doing that BnB combo, but it’s not something you should do all the time and it’s really one of the only few close up combo’s he has that doesn’t involve ultra or super (though it can involve super). In some matches, you shouldn’t even think about teleporting near them or bother going near them (Zangief in particular).
He’s not a very combo oriented character either and if you hate being patient and doing damage little by little, he’s not the right character for you. A lot of your damage is going to be from stopping them in their tracks when they try to get close to you, or avoiding moves with teleport or slide and punishing them for their mistakes. Plus he’s slow, a lot of his mobility is going to come from teleporting or sliding, both of which can be punished if done carelessly.
Really awful news guys, but the general concensus is that Iyo retired. He has not played since losing at SBO. You can check Sabin’s Japan thread if you want.:shake::sad:…the model for my sim is gone.
At versus city it was said that Iyo may just be taking a break for work purposes. Hes really into his work apparently. Maybe he’ll return, but for now hes a goner.
An offensive rushdown sim is a dead sim. I wouldn’t say that sim is necessarily defensive as much as he is reactive. You make most of your moves as a reaction to their moves. Sim can seem to play very quickly, but it takes real experience to know how NOT to get into a bad situation. If you mess up 40% of your life is gone (or more).
Sim is a tactical game. You not only have to get your hits in, but you have to concentrate hard on minimizing risk. You can’t just throw your limbs out whenever you want, they’ll be hit. You can’t just do your ultra, you could VERY easily trade for the loss of the match.
Probably everybody already knows this but, j.b+lk crosses up. It should not be practical considering you can’t combo off of it, but I used it a few times online (after a knockdown) and people are so suprised at being jumped in at by dhalsim, and they usually don’t know that he has a crossup, so it always landed.
If you really want to use his cross-up. Use j. b+mk instead, it’s basically as good as a shoto cross-up. Plus you can combo it to b.mk xx Lp. flame or whatev.
Yeah, I would assume that since Sim’s jump is so floaty that it just leaves ample time to AA. But besides that, I you do get the chance to use it. It’s pretty good.
Question: When you cross up with b.XX, do you hold back relative to the opponent or you? Eg. Youre on the left, guy is down on the right. You jump over him and cross up, do you hold left or right!?
You hold back relative to the position you jumped from. So, in your example, if you’re on the left and you’re crossing up, you want to hold LEFT as back.
I’d like to throw out a tip that worked wonders for me when I found it out, but needs testing or more knowledge to really see it’s usefulness.
After doing ultra and you anticipate the jump forward, maybe too close to the corner, maybe it’s a shoto and they can quick air tatsu to get out of trouble, jump with them and mummy. I was playing some local online matches with an akuma and it traded with an air tatsu, causing him to juggle and land on the still-active ultra. Depending on the spacing you might be able to slide in and land super, but idk.
I used to sit there and AA them but all that does is reset. and while it is good to lock them down with the ultra, trading hits could be worth it to land the ultra.
So any general knowledge on what mummy trades with/beats? because if they see you jump with them they def won’t safe jump. Sry if been discussed but I just found it out and like it a lot.
I’ve found that landing sim’s ult on an akuma can be extremely difficult.
Most of the time he can just phase tele out of it and there isn’t a whole lot that can be done about that.
I have no idea what will be done with sim in SSF4 but something that I have DREAMED ABOUT would be the following:
Through pure skill and intellect you(sim) have the guy cornered and use catastrophe. Let’s say you’re playing a Ryu for example.
To escape he performs a sky high tats and clears the entire screen landing on the other side.
How about giving Sim the ability to throw the slick bastard back to the other side of the screen and instead of passing through the ult when he goes flying or lands, he hits it and takes the damage (this would of course negate the throw damage and swap it for the ult damage)?
This would force so many players to be more careful when avoiding an ult that can be near impossible to land on so many players… including Akuma.
Don’t know if this has been discussed before. I actually play vs a lot of Sagot and Ryu at my work and landing the ult is so hard vs these two, so many times they get out of it, I throw them back over and the ult is completely wasted
