Assuming Sony doesn’t announce that the PS4 is also a DRM box that watches you in your sleep and makes all of your physical media worthless I don’t see MS recovering from this.
No amount of exclusive would draw back the core audience and the general inconvenience of the thing would drive away everyone else.
You’d think that, but even after all the bad press that’s come out, dudebros are still hype as fuck for the new X-Box.
That seems to have been Microsoft’s plan all along with the reveal. Get people who know nothing of gaming excited for a home entertainment center they really don’t need.
Maybe they’ll try to win us back come E3, but clearly the reveal wasn’t for us.
Sony are so obviously going to do the same thing. I’d be really surprised if they didn’t. They have a new patent filed for the same kind of DRM locks, they repeatedly stress that the issue is ‘important’ and need to make both developers and consumers happy. Isn’t that basically what Microsoft are doing right now? It’s how they try to spin it, and how they will continue spinning it until people generally start to calm down on the issue.
That being said. If Sony were to allow used games, I don’t mean that in Microsoft’s meaning of the word where you have to pay a huge fee to play one, I mean it as things are right now with our games - I would buy and support the Sony hardware on a moral standpoint. I hope in this situation somebody can win the day with an ounce of morality. The gaming market grows year on year with bigger and badder profits all the time, yet they need to shove new DRM down our throats to earn more. Its greed and greed only, another reason why I really don’t like it. If push came to shove it would be easier than I probably first think it would be to opt to stay with my PS3.
On the issue of the gif reposts, the dark souls one is so much better than the others. I feel that needs to be reposted every page. On every thread.
Lets be real, Sony always plays things on the fence. So as much as they filed that patent, they never implemented it. They always wait for someone to do it and see if there’s any backlash and then do it. I mean look at the Online Pass scenario. EA started it and barely got any backlash so Sony and others followed suit.
Given that Microsoft is getting so much backlash, I doubt Sony will implement the DRM lock.
Based on what I’ve been reading over at NeoGAF, it seems that Sony is likely playing a wait and see game, judging people’s response to the XBOne announcements before making a decision of their own.
Which is an incredibly smart move. Sometimes the best play one can make is to just wait and let the opposition bury itself.
HOWEVER, Sony is also in a very precarious position. By not implementing the DRM, while that would make all of us ecstatic and much more likely to buy their system, it could also potentially piss off developers who were excited to finally deal with the secondhand trade they hated so much.
I don’t see a move where Sony doesn’t piss one side off so they really have to sit and think about how they’ll approach this.
What are they gonna do? Not put their games on the PS4? Dandy, but now look at the failure xbox one is looking to be. You bet your ass that if they implement DRM less people will buy an xbox.
