I recall Sony making a deal with FIFA to do exactly that, and Sony had a huge edge outside of the USA due to it. I mean remember going to France, and seeing airport that have PS3 demo consoles being used everywhere there.

Isn’t gamestop the place where a majority of the games are sold in the first place. If they really wanted to, gamestop could choose not to carry their system or the games and basically kill it, right?
