-You and many developers seem to be under the impression that a used or even a pirated game equates to one lost sale. This is rarely the case at all, if someone sees a game and says this isn’t worth the price they are asking for it or they simply don’t have that money taking away the option to buy it cheaper later down the line doesn’t mean they are magically going to buy it new it just means they aren’t going to buy it at all.
-Video games have the highest revenue income of any form of entertainment right now yet despite this the used sales and piracy rates of music, television and movies dwarfs that of games. If this is the case then why can I still buy a DVD or a CD that actually contains all the content on it and I am free to resell it, share it or lend it as I choose? Used sales and piracy hurt the creators of this content just as much as games and movies cost more to make for the most part. Yes both music and video have expanded to more digital means for distribution but neither abandoned their original distribution format, I can still buy a physical thing for about the same price I could a decade ago without having to attach the MP3’s on my CD or my movie to an account and have it locked. Digital options like this exist but the physical unrestricted option is still there.
-Used sales and piracy are the gaming industries biggest scapegoats for poor game sales. Does it hurt their income? Sure but not to the extent they make it out to be. The biggest things that have led to these poor sales this generation have been incredibly bloated development budgets (This has really gotten out of hand over the past 4 years), unrealistic sales expectations (“Resident Evil 6 failed to meet sales expectation only selling 5 million copies over this fiscal quarter”/ “DMC4 sold over 2 million copies and was a great finical success but we want 5 million sales”/ “Tomb Raider ONLY sold one million copies in its first week? Unacceptable!”), poor reading of market demand, stagnant homogenized game design and sometimes the game was just bad or poorly marketed. The sales expectation thing is particularly insane when you have games like Bayonetta, Witcher 2, Metal Gear Rising and Dark Souls all of which are just as large in scope of design and arguably of better quality getting similar sales or even a fraction of those sales and considering them a great success.
yea, i feel bad for EA losing money through used games.
hmmmm -_-
how about small team developers just stick to smaller games on xbl or psn.
theres a reason why games are triple A.
its simple because rich developers made a great game that people love? as suppose to making a high budget shitty game and expecting to make that money through gamestop lmao.
Not gonna lie, I am a bit of a graphics whore I’ll be interested to see how much the cross platform titles will differ. If there is going to be a huge difference like titles running at 30fps on xbox and 60fps then that will be a huge deciding factor for me.
If graphics is your main selling point, then worrying about which one will be prettier (XBox vs PS3) is like waiting to see who is gonna win 2nd place in the beauty contest to ask her out on a date; why not just go for the winner (PC)
Besides, no matter which console is more powerful, it will be throttled by the cross platform development tools that push neither console to its limits anyway
That’s why I don’t get why people go hard at nintendo. At least they are not focused on graphics and more focused on game quality ( I am only referring to NINTENDO not their 3rd party developers)
It’s not but I see your point, however dropping so much money on a high end PC only to upgrade it every couple of years for just gaming is not my idea of a good investment. However if matchmaking on the new Xboxlive is vastly superior to what Sony offers then that would swing me back.
Game companies seem to be painting with very broad strokes with their consoles nowadays. Games are basically secondary, its what else the systems can do that companies care about. Its too much, its to the point you cant put the game in and just play it, you have to jump through hoops.
as an outsider, i would say a lot of microsofts decisions look and seem really unpopular with gamers, it will be interesting to see how sony responds.
This is a fucking myth, it only takes a one time video card purchase to shit on everything a generation of consoles can do, no need for multiple upgrades. Now if you want to make your already great looking games even better looking than their console counterparts you may need to drop a little more cash. Example, I haven’t upgraded my card since 2009 and it still shits on any current gen game that has a multiplatform release when compared to the console release. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radeon_HD_5000_Series
Fair enough, it’s been a long time since I played Crysis
I was wondering about something, now that the xboxone will require you to put in the disk’s serial code and then link to your profile, does this mean you can get refunds on digital downloads now?
They havent made 360’s that do that in like 2 or 3 years Thye fixed the issue. It was caused by bad ventilation. Xbox One has no shortage of exhaust vents lol
I’m willing to bet it will still have issues. TBH both xbone and ps4 launch consoles are something I’m going to hold off on. Till they iron out the kinks and have libraries worth caring for.
