Woman's Tourney Thoughts

Okay, as a girl who played in the women?s tournament (I played in the women?s final four), I just want to give my thoughts. I want to thank Evo and the people involved for having a women?s tournament. Without it, I would probably never have been encouraged to pay the entry fee and save up money for gas, food, and hotel in order to make the trip out to Vegas. Evo 2010 was my first time ever being a part of a large gathering of people who have one common interest and/or hobby of video games. Everyone there was real nice and cool.

All this talk of sexism and discrimination is stupid in my opinion. I?m one of those girls who don?t think having a women?s tourney belittles women. Instead, the women?s tournament motivated many girls to go to Evo and its outcome (hopefully) will encourage other girls to play/train harder for next year and beat us girls that participated this year. Overall, the goal of the women?s tournament was to get girls to come and play and it did that. I?m not going to speak for the other girls who competed but without the women?s tourney, I personally would not have gone to Vegas and would not have cared about how I played. But the women?s tourney at Evo has made me care and say ?oh shit, I fuckin suck bad? and really am embarrassed that thousands of people saw it. Heck, I feel ashamed about how I performed and do not like the fact that I undeservingly got ?third place? because if you guys were at Evo and watching the women?s beginning pools, there were a lot of talented girls competing. Now at home I?m starting to try to improve how I play and learn the game?s complexities like matchups, footsies, and links instead of just playing how I would play online (which still beats about 60-70% of online players, dont believe me, I can send you my player record). So not only do I think the women?s tournament would encourage new girls to play, it will motivate those already playing to improve (myself included).

So basically, I say the tournament was a success in that it brought girls out to play and also has encouraged me to try to improve and play more seriously. I hope Evo has one again next year but if they decide not to, I?ll still attend and play in the main tourney and hopefully play harder.

Anyone wants to play me, send me a friend request at psn: phuong05. I?ll be happy to give you a 100 win streak. I just really want to improve.

Your words are like a poison to a certain overanalyzing feminist who posts here. Good stuff.

Keep up the hard work and see you next EVO.

i still don’t understand the separation that would be like separating the mens pool in to skill classes either jump in or don’t … don’t wanna get owned then practice ? i don’t hate on skill level just on the separation my X was all bitchy about that shit so i tend to hate anything separated want to be treated equally take the equal beating .

This is exactly what I wanted to hear from one of the ladies in the tournament that I do not know, just an honest perspective on the whole thing and with this in mind, I think it was a certain success. We all remember out first tournament and know how it feels to be outplayed and that will either motivate you to get better, or force you into retirement.

Looking forward to see how the women place next year!

(i was also in the women finals 4…“Lina”)

i agree with yellow gal completely.
at first i was like, “wow a girls tourney, really?” i thought it was dumb, and it separated men and women. in fact, i didnt even enter when i signed up, i just entered the main tourney and later on realized, “hey, its a free tourney…why not.” i did not think i was going to make it that far at all. i am extremely disappointed in myself for not playing as much before evo and knowing my matchups. didnt think there were gonna be 30+ chuns until tourney started. after entering the tourney, i was quite impressed with the turnout and the skill level of most of the girls. because i always heard from most people that the girls that will enter are probably just some guy’s girlfriends who was pressured to enter so they have something to do. but i am very proud of all the girls who entered because they did their best and came out to enter a tourney that is watched by many people. i feel like evo did a great job creating this tourney to motivate girls to play. im sure many girls “at home watching” or girls who entered the tourney can say, “hey i can be that good too and play ssfiv and beat those girls that made top 4”…because thats what it should be about, motivating more girls to play and WANT to get better…and making the community less of a sausage fest. and for girls and guys to have more in common to come together for a video game tournament. most rewarding of all was meeting all the girls in the tourney. so glad to see that there are that many girls that are willing to play at a competitive level. there is no need to bring facts of how girls are less skilled to play or how we belong in the kitchen. in the end of the day, we can only blame ourselves for sucking…guy or girl. anyone is capable of being a good respectable player, as long as they practice.

@yello gal: GGs btw, if im still playing…hope to see you around cali more often. you can add me and we can play together

GG’s Airamae/Gungirl-, no joke~ solid play. I need lots of work. <3 Going to have to try your killer bee sometime.

All I have to say is, girl gamers better get some training on. If all went as planned, expect an influx of new faces next year. That’s a whole lot of time to get ready. If Evo does another Women’s Invitational (and they should, honestly), I expect a much larger, more dangerous pool of players. Be ready~!

Like it or not girls will never be a part of the top 8 in EVO even how much they play. I did see the videos and I was impressed with the girls playing especially this is a male sport. Guys have different ways in beating them and they don’t have the “testies” to make it all the way. It’s a good thing they had there own tournament and they can improve but the main part of fighting is mostly the guys. The guys are going to rule even though girls like it or not.

I’m really good and I wanted to be a part of EVO but I didn’t have enough time and money to save up. I will be part of EVO2K11 next year and I will make an impact there. I don’t mind to play a few girls while I’m there to show them what’s up. My style is unique and it will catch people offguard. Trust me and I will be playing alot online to improve my skill.

YellowGal, you can add me if you like and I’ll practice with you. You will learn alot from me and you will gets lots of training done by me. I’ll play you anytime. Thanks babe!!

You better be trolling.

OMG please shut up
You’re facts are wrong.

Anyway, like i said before, women’s invitational was a sucess in my opinion, now reading yellow_gal and lina’s opinion made me smile, things are changing around street fighter and i love it.

delete

spoken like a true gamer. just keep practicing Lina and dont quit ssfiv. i think you did great, knowing the fact that blanka has a hard time with most of the characters.
it helps that most of the girls who play dont look like the stereotype fat ugly chicks. :lovin:

Makes sense really hahahah!

That’s why we have nba/wnba , pta/wpta(tennis), pga/wpga(golf), almost every sport has a ladies division, even american football had one

btw ignore johnson the guy has the belief that hes good when CLEARLY hes not

Sorry for the late reply, somehow managed to glance over this post. The twin studies I speak of would have no shared enviornment - they’re studies where identical twins are placed in different homes, either via adoption or via foster care. Of course, they’re hardly perfect, since the sample size is always going to be rather small - but case studies can still say a lot.

Of course, it’d be kinda hard to talk about all this biological nature vs. nuture male vs. female stuff without at least mentioning (brace yourself, piggy, I’m about to link Wikipedia again :badboy: ) David Reimer - butttt since that was more about total sexual reassignment than simple upbringing, I don’t think Reimer’s inability to identify with his reassigned role is going to be entirely relevant to the issue of whether women can thrive at competitive games with the appropriate upbringing and (perhaps) societal change.

Still, lest I or anyone else be accused of ignoring it… let it be said that if you take a boy from a family with a possible history of mental instability (his twin brother later developed schizophrenia), accidentially destroy his penis during circumcision, carve out a vagina and raise him as a girl, there’s at least a moderately strong reason to believe he may never self-identify as a female (despite hormonal therapy) and eventually commit suicide.

(the dark side of Bridget…)

Wow, people use well-known events from history as a common ground to discuss similar concepts and principles! It’s almost as bad as holding up a tennis ball and a flashlight to illustrate how the Earth’s rotation causes day and night! Everybody knows that the Earth is not a tennis ball, what a crock of shit! What a bunch of raging White Knight scrublords!

Again, it’s hard to tell for sure unless and until Justin talks about it - on the one hand, speaking solely about the R1 ultra here, one could make a solid case for the “bait” situation I described, but on the other hand, -_AnZ0k8zOs#t=02m35s]Justin *does[/i… :bgrin:

One could argue that she risked not being able to use her ultra in a more guaranteed fashion later on (not to mention that sitting on a charged ultra can deter the opponent from central elements of their game - I doubt this is as much a factor with Soul Orb as it is for, say, Bison’s Psycho Punisher or Abel’s Breathless (fucking Breathless…) - but I’m not a Rose player, and don’t have much experience against good Roses, so I may well be wrong here), and regardless, the reward in both cases was miniscule, utterly miniscule - like a slot machine where the top payout is a nickel and a stick of stale bubblegum, or (for a particularly unimaginative analogy) a horse that pays off one dollar for every fifty you bet on it.

Very, very nice! My only PhD is in Analogy, and as you can see from the example anology above, it turned out to not even be the academic sort of Anal-ogy. :shake:

Well, in addition to my unaccredited PhD in Analogy, I have dual MDs in Slackology and Ownology. And I’ve been known to drink the hell out of some Dr. Pepper. And, uh, I’m from MD, if that also counts…

Because physical sports are the same as videogames in this context, lol…

I truthfully hope that ~3/4 of the people in this thread are trolling and aren’t actually this retarded.

So your calling Marn, Jwong, and Ricky(okay maybe not him…) undersexed males?

How dare you!

I have to say that I also felt that the women’s tourney had sort of a “separate but equal” type ring to it at first. But after seeing it in person I felt totally different about it.
I have been around before when my boyfriend and his friends play SF but have never been very interested. Part of the reason for this is that I’ve never been really into fighting games in general. Another reason is that for the most part (but not all I admit) my male friends tend to be elitist and uninviting with their hobbies. Almost everything they are interested in movies, music, comics, video games, all end up being a boys club whenever they talk about it no matter how much us girls know about the subject. I don’t really think they are aware of it but it makes it very unpleasant trying to play with them, and I’ll bet I’m not the only girl who feels that way.
Basically, I felt like instead of the organizers being condescending towards the girls I felt like they were saying, “hey we don’t want you to feel like this is boys only, we want you to participate and we want to see you do well”. Which I think was really nice. I guess it really depends on how cynical you are about it.
All I know is that after watching Evo in person for the first time I drove the 9 hours home and immediately picked up the stick and played for the first time for about 3 hours. It’s been 2 days and I’ve logged 7.5 hours on the game and made a profile on SRK (this is my first post). So their strategy worked very well on me. I only hope that I can enter Evo next year and make it a round or two before being knocked out.

Best post. Honestly, give it your best and don’t be discouraged by anyone.

lol @ all these sexist comments.

Girls, add me on PSN. I don’t sandbag.

Btw, the stuff about girls being slower or w/e, it’s a load of b.s.

yo sherry, you and bison girl should settle this the old school MVC2 way and have an epic as fuck money match!!! that shit would be dope
