you don’t have it on 360 huh? i wouldn’t mind playing you.
Male players never throw out random high damage moves out of desperation. Justin Wong, for example, would never misread his opponent and whip out Rufus ultra 2 at 3/4 distance while playing Gamerbee in the semifinals.
Never ever.
With about 2 seconds left on the clock… wake up ultra was probably the ONLY POSSIBLE WAY that BurnYourBra could have won that match. I don’t think there would even have been time for a backthrow > Ultra.
Of course… that’s exactly why Kayane should have f’ing known to block it.
I don’t argue that African-American Vernacular English is a dialect, I’m just saying that “Code-Switching” is the wrong term to use in this case :-p
I wasn’t trying to prove anyone wrong. I just watched the women’s final again, and I didn’t find it to be terrible or unwatchable. Sure, it wasn’t perfect, but it also wasn’t Justin Wong throwing out BBTs like they were candy to guarantee his early departure. My only complaint is all of these people saying it was terrible, when 1) they didn’t even go 2) at least 1 woman did very well in the full tournament which is more than most people can say 3) well-regarded top level players didn’t always perform flawlessly
lol Justin doesn’t make top 8 for once in his fucking life and people talk shit. ;[
I think the point was…even the best do it sometimes.
It’s sort of a compliment…
Correct, that was the point.
In general, people get critical after someone takes a gamble and it doesn’t work. In Burnyourbra’s case, she was out of time, took a shot, and it paid off… but she still gets crap. Some people posting here are practically case studies in confirmation bias.
See, this goes back to my primary issue with the tournament. “A lot of females at home saw that.” Really? How many females were watching Evo, and how many were watching that wouldn’t have been watching without the tournament? I obviously don’t have any hard data, but I suspect the number of females who either watched or attended Evo specifically because of the women’s tournament is tiny.
Not arguing the point, but just wanting to correct your numbers. I don’t know how you came up with a “low end esstimate” of 3000 players in SSF4, but in reality there were around 1700.
Sounded like a shot at Justin Wong (not that I care), just saying. I get it. I actually didn’t watch the finals for the ladies tournament so I didn’t know what the wake-up ultra was referring to (BYB). -__->
wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, that’s all I got really.
Let’s be fair - Gamerbee was baiting Wong pretty heavily. The R1 ultra was a bit dumb, I suppose Wong was assuming Gamerbee would continue to push the blockstring - the R2 one, though, is classic baiting, Gamerbee does crouching punch followed by Jag Kick throughout the match (shrLBshSva0#t=0m15s]0:15, 1:16, 1:20), then “fakes” his “crouching punch > jag kick” string at 1:27 and [- “fake/fake/real” is a pretty classic pattern, and I don’t think Justin can be exactly faulted for his bad read there. Because of the particular spacing here, when it whiffs it looks utterly ridiculous, but if Adon had gone for the kick, it would have looked like a good read on Justin’s part rather than scrubby play on Gamerbee’s.
I think there’s a significant difference between that and throwing out tqMzsj__UO0#t=01m18s]this](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shrLBshSva0#t=01m30s[/media) or . I guess the first one is to take a breather and make sure she times a neutral jump correctly, but there’s really no reason for the second, especially not as Rose. Maybe there was some sort of baiting going on here, but I honestly don’t see it.
I actually misread the data and it seems that there were 3000 players total, not simply in SSF4 - though I was still under the impression that there were 2k+ registered for SSF4 - where did you get the 1700 number? (not arguing, just curious - it is hard for me to estimate how many people were there, since anything over 1000 is just a lot of people :-p)
I’m not understanding your crriticisms here at all, especially the first one. Do you understand how Rose’s U2 works?
There could be some ridiculous amount of psychology here that we aren’t seeing, but I don’t think so - in any case, Rose using her Ultra to less than the fullest extent is not perfect, but BBT on block caused Justin to lose the round…which seems worse? (no disrespect to Justin, this just happens to be a good counter-example at this time)
I only caught about 4 matches from the womens tourny (overslept thanks to the wonderful world of Vegas) but I have seen some of the videos online. IMO, some of the players were pretty good but I honestly blame the lack of skill on the people the women hang around. What I mean by that is, some of the women players hang out with tons of top or decent players on a daily basis BUT don’t really learn much because alot of these dudes sandbag the hell out of them. It’s like they’re all just looking to score and think the way of getting it is to let the chicks win. Honestly, I see this going on in various arcades I go to whenever there’s a female playing. I also found it funny how the crowd exploded whenever a B&B combo was landed (is that how low some ppl think of female players?). In all honesty, if you hang with a chick who wants to learn, then help her learn. Keep the pick up lines or “smoothness” outside the arcade…or at least save them for XBOX LIVE
Definite congrats to Kayane though. That was a well deserved win :china:
…son of a fucking bitch…
My LG200 professor is going to smack me for that if she ever finds out. Hopefully she’s long retired by now.
I was wrong, moreso in my defense of my use than the use itself (which I still defend as an acceptable informality, though far from dictionary correct).
And this little piggy stayed home and made a fool of Doctor Cuss, MD on the internet.
“Switching registers” would have been a more accurate term on my part.
“Terrible” is certainly putting it rather harshly, but I still don’t see why going to Evo should be mandatory if one wishes to critique a fight - there are top players who didn’t this year (Luffy) and top players who never have (Tomo) - not to mention that there’s plenty of absolute trash shit that did go to Evo whose opinions aren’t automatically valid or more valid just because of their attendance.
Edit: As far as “which one is worse” - I think either going for the death chip or making a poor read (whichever one Justin is guilty of in R1) in a close-range, “first to throw kills” fight is better than throwing out Soul Orb as a fireball nullifier when your character has a fireball, has a fireball reflector, has a fireball absorber, and is either full screen (R1) or is in no immediate danger of being chipped to death (R2).
I really do owe you more of an apology, my first reply to you was completely idiotic on my part. :-\
This is certainly a valid point! With so many people posting, though, it is hard to tell whose opinion actually matters (I’m still pretty new to the SF scene, so I’m just trying to pick through and find the useful posts for my own knowledge). With Justin throwing out BBT there in R1, it just seemed like something I would do with my last minute panic - I’m pretty low, one combo will kill me, maybe this will work - even though I know, in the back of my head, I’ll lose 95% of the time…this is why this just seemed worse to me, especially since ByB didn’t really risk anything, putting the risk v reward scale (in my mind) worse for EGJWong than for ByB
And no worries for the mixup earlier, I’m working towards a PhD in Linguistics and just didn’t want people in Ling 001 getting confused (I also worked very closely with A.J.Toribio who is referenced on that Wikipedia page, so I wasn’t really playing fair :-p and yes, I would have let “Register Switching” slide, especially since this is something about which everybody should be informed!)
If you are actually an MD, color me impressed! Help me get into med school after I get my PhD?
Who says there are no good female players, just none of them are here.
Here’s the level of japanese girls are at LAST YEAR: neKBjaHvkug]YouTube - Mepu (Sagat) vs Choco (Blanka) [GodsGarden Girls Tournament

Man, I love how people are bringing up suffragettes and civil rights and shit, comparing it to fucking Evo and women in the fighting game scene.
First off, we aren’t talking about women’s issues in society here, we are talking about the fighting game community and Evo in particular. This is a completely different situation, with completely different rules. In society, you have the major obstacle of the minority needing to struggle against an apathetic or hostile majority who controls the status and placement of said minority by being the power that decides the fate of the minority. In the fighting game community, and at Evo, this is NOT the case.
It doesn’t matter if they hate women. It doesn’t matter if they get bombarded with sexist comments and lewd remarks. Why? Because the one and ONLY thing that judges whether or not they are worthy, is a fucking computer, running a goddamn game. SSF4 doesn’t give a shit if you have a pair of tits. It cares only if your life bar is bigger than your opponent. It wouldn’t matter if the entire Evo staff were women haters, there is no way to argue with the game saying a girl won the best of 3 set. The game determines if you are good enough. The game determines if you advance. There is no subjectivity, nor personal influences, that determine who places at the top of the pyramid.
Evo is not a fucking meet and greet. Evo is a tournament, a place to test yourself and compete. It’s nice to make friends and all that, but at the end of the day, if you aren’t playing to compete, go play casuals. Don’t play for acceptance by a bunch of fucking random people. Play for yourself. If you can’t do that, then get the fuck out and play casuals. Think Justin gives a shit that everyone wants to see him lose? He probably thinks it’d be nice, yeah, but it’s not keeping him from competing, because honestly, fuck those guys. Tons of people respect Justin’s level of play, and still call him a fatass prick. Thinks he gives a shit? Nope.
You think this happens to just women? You think that players don’t get constant shittalk? Justin rolls people’s faces in almost every game, but he’s definitely a ‘heel’. People call him a fatass, ugly, arrogant, a prick, etc. Ricky O is just as dominant as Justin, and because he’s ‘fabulous’, he gets mad hate. Fatass, nerd, asshole, loser, virgin, ***, etc. These are common insults thrown all around, to fucking everyone.
And it’s okay. Know why? Because when you get passionate competition, you get passionate fans. This is the same shit that’s been going on for years, in every competitive sport out there.
The fighting game scene is a lot closer to sports than you think. We have faces like Daigo and heels like Justin. Evil empires and unknown underdogs. People support their team, their crew. Players become goats when they drop the ball, and fucking heroes when they clutch up. Think fans are any nicer to A-Rod than what the average FGC guy is to…well, fucking anyone up on stage? Think A-Rod gives a shit that he gets called a cheat and lowlife? That his numbers are all from roids? Top athletes can compete at the level they do because they can tune that shit out. Because they know that when they go into a hostile barn, they are going to get called some really nasty shit, but that doesn’t faze them. There will ALWAYS be haters trying to pull you down, to get in your head. If you can’t handle the same level of antagonizing that comes with any sport, then get the fuck out, because you aren’t a competitor, and you won’t make it until you can.
The best ignore what everyone else says and have the inner confidence to defy all odds. The only thing that matters is winning games, and that is an impartial judge. If they are hungry enough to be the best, we’ll see them rise. We don’t need to do some retarded shit and turn our scene into golf, just so that they ‘feel more comfortable’.
