There have actually been a lot of scientific studies done on reaction time between women and men.
If you Google:
"reaction time male vs female"
There have have been a few studies that if correct, on average men have slightly faster reaction time. Even then it could be possible that some females will have above average reaction time and men the opposite vice versa.
*“Gender. At the risk of being politically incorrect, in almost every age group, males have faster reaction times than females, and female disadvantage is not reduced by practice (Noble et al., 1964; Welford, 1980; Adam et al., 1999; Dane and Erzurumlugoglu, 2003; Der and Deary, 2006). The last study is remarkable because it included over 7400 subjects. Bellis (1933) reported that mean time to press a key in response to a light was 220 msec for males and 260 msec for females; for sound the difference was 190 msec (males) to 200 msec (females). In comparison, Engel (1972) reported a reaction time to sound of 227 msec (male) to 242 msec (female). However, things may be changing–Silverman (2006) reported evidence that the male advantage in visual reaction time is getting smaller (especially outside the US), possibly because more women are participating in driving and fast-action sports. Botwinick and Thompson (1966) found that almost all of the male-female difference was accounted for by the lag between the presentation of the stimulus and the beginning of muscle contraction. Muscle contraction times were the same for males and females. In a surprising finding, Szinnai et al. (2005) found that gradual dehydration (loss of 2.6% of body weight over a 7-day period) caused females to have lengthened choice reaction time, but males to have shortened choice reaction times. Adam et al. (1999) reported that males use a more complex strategy than females. Barral and Debu (2004) found that while men were faster than women at aiming at a target, the women were more accurate. Jevas and Yan (2001) reported that age-related deterioration in reaction time was the same in men and women.”

A large majority of my brief research suggest that on average women have a slight disadvantage in one aspect of playing street fighter, a game where reaction time down to 1/60th of a second can make a huge difference.
Did you even READ wtf your first paragraph quoted towards me said?:
hey guys this thread isn’t about biology or sociology forum it’s about your thoughts on women in a social event typically dominated by men, please take your smart man talk the hell elsewhere so we can discuss which characters, er players, we’d want to have irl sex w/. nerds… nerd idiots… you’re probably the same idiots who discuss zoning and nerd shit like foot-fetishes in the ken forum… nerds! ugh!
^That’s grade A trolling. Go ahead and spin it however you want, but a paragraph like that is what makes you look like you are trying to start a flame war. If it isn’t directed towards me—then don’t quote me then put it right after, because that makes it look like you are directing that comment right at me. You’re free to try and explain WHAT you were trying to accomplish with those remarks, because I’m curious why you’d say crap like that in the first place.
Also, sometimes…just sometimes it’s hard as hell to tell when someone is just being sarcastic in an attempt to come off witty. If that was your goal then it failed from the way I read it. Half my fault, half your own for not being more clear/obvious.
The earlier comments about biology and sociology to attempt to explain why girl players are at this time less skilled than the more skilled male players were idiotic. Hell most of them were like herp derp we are hunters herp derp we isht made to be good at games over durr cooking vaginas durr. Arguments like that are childish, because the focus should be on the women who ARE playing the game and ARE going to competitions for the game. I wanted to spark up a topic about why people think those girls who were at Evo, playing at the competitive level, seemed to really be under par compared to guys. Realistic ideas could have been not enough practice, maybe they don’t come out to enough tournies to get better, are they just online warriors, did they just enter for lulz, maybe not enough fighting game experience in general, etc. Instead people seem to fault the women competitors JUST for being women which is THE dumbest argument you can make. It’s like saying the reason non of the top 8 were white males is because blacks/asians are so superior to them just for being black/asian. Evolve a bit caveman dwellers.
Again, me starting to talk about the gap between males and females was to see WHY, but it seems the posters here came to the conclusion it’s because their brains aren’t programmed for it. Plus, the OP wasn’t just that it was to get a read on what people thought about the womens tourney in general as a whole, maybe discuss players they were impressed with/not, and see what people think they’ll do to step their game up for next Evo.
I’m going to explain what happened so everyone knows my side since Stephanie is already telling hers. It’s up to you guys whether or not you guys want to listen.
Stephanie and I never got along since last EVO. I personally never said anything to her until Saturday. We began playing and I already heard about the things she said about me two nights before so I didn’t really want to talk to her. After I win my first match, she begins to say things like “oh, why you gotta counter pick me? not good enough to use your main? etc. etc.” and of course, i respond with “whatever btch, whatever". I lose, she tries to shake my hand and I said "Fck that” and walked away. Why do I need to show respect to someone who was disrespecting me while we were playing? As I walked away, she’s kept talking shit so I turned around and told her to stop talking sht before I fck her up.
Yeah, I’m salty that I lost, but that’s not why I was being disrespectful towards her. Haha, her and her friend Anna are telling the story to everyone as if I was a big mean bully who likes picking on little girls.
I don’t know how I would have responded in your situation. I get rage infused over simple things so odds are I would’ve swung before I even spoke lol. It’s a shame she has to bring crap like that into Evo.
Also, sorry if in my original post I’m a bit rough on you and your commentary you did for the womens matches. I’m just being honest as many others were that it was a bit face palm worthy, but if it’s any consolation you were still better than Adam Sessler lol.
haha its cool. I wasn’t really meant to be a commentator anyways. I just had to say something since Stephanie and Anna made it seem like I only wanted to kill her cause she beat me. I have nothing against her for beating me, although I really wish she didn’t. But I’m not going to just stand there while she talks shit to me.
How does one decide the “best” artist? The “best” director? The “best” author, businessman, doctor, chef? The “best” musician? More albums sold = better than? Whitney Houston has the fourth best selling album of all time. Best selling musician of all time? ABBA’s number four. I don’t think anyone really believes that “more sales = better than”, so all we’re really left with is statements like “the artists/musicians/directors I prefer, and my friends prefer, are all male. Why, yes, we all happen to be male - but my girlfriend totally said she agreed with me and I’m positive she wasn’t just saying that to avoid a tedious argument because I asked if she was and she said ‘no honey’ and went back to her Maya Angelou book”.
Of all the professions you mentioned, the only one with any hope of objective analysis is chess. Considering that chess champions tend to be in their 40s (except for, what, Fischer and maybe Capablanca? Paging Sirlin to the thread…), and that only in the past twenty years have a large amount of girls grown up playing chess, it’s not altogether surprising that grandmasters are all male. The first eighty-seven people elected to the MLB Hall of Fame were all white, whites still dominate the current list, but I wouldn’t say that whites are superior in baseball. Statistics and trends can be misleading.
Just because the professions have had a lot of time to develop doesn’t mean that women have had a lot of time to develop in those professions. How long does it take to go from birth to med school to to doctorate to residency to having your name on the letterhead? Forty years or so? Forty years ago, black people still drank from different water fountains. Times have changed, but it’s going to take a while for girls who grew up with the opportunity to be a doctor to actually become a doctor, rather than remain in residency.
I guess a good analogy could be something like “English has been around for about five hundred years in its modern form, so why are there no good English authors from Mongolia”?
I think what some (myself included) are arguing is that the women most able to compete are put off by the whole fake swarm of a bunch of nerds fawning over them. “Hostility” is perhaps not the best word for it, but it can be considered a “hostile environment” in the sense that the Sahara is a hostile environment - not because it hates things, but because it is hard for things to thrive there.
So you’re saying that women are naturally inferior at fighting games/everything, but that fighting games/everything aren’t “male dominated”? Maybe I’m mis-reading, tell me if I am, it just seems like you’re trying to have your cake and eat it too. Anyway, when 95% or so of the people competing at Evo are male, I would go so far as to say it is, in fact, currently in a state of being dominated by male presence.
I agree, to an extent - but given the lineup, I think it was positioned as best as it could be. It makes sense to have all the Street Fighter stuff together, then drop Tekken in between since it’s the “second biggest”. I would have personally gone Melty > TvC > Womens > Marvel or Marvel > Womens, but I just like Marvel.
I think it could have been nice on Saturday, not Friday though. But then you’re either taking time away from semis or forcing people to choose between watching one or the other, neither of which is a great option.
I agree.
I… really don’t know what to say to that. Some black people think differently from some other black people! Some people are insulted when they’re lynched for dating a white girl and some people are insulted when white girls treat them as mercy fucks. Some people are insulted when they’re actively shunned for engaging in a certain activity or shunned within that activity, and some people are insulted when they’re treated like handicapped children in the same activity. It’s crazy, makes you wish there was a middle ground or something, you know?
Granted, I’m sure there are individuals who get pissed no matter what you do, but those are individuals, not a group as a whole. The best you can do is deal with individual situations on an individual basis.
What’s most odd is that I spent the last n paragraphs disagreeing with you, yet in the end I basically agree with your conclusion. The Womens’ Invitational is sorta like watching Division III college football - the level of play is certainly inferior, but where else are you going to see Gouken in a tournament, or see stuff like ?
I can vouch for BurnYourBra. When she was playing regularly with the MN SF kids she was consistently able to pull wins away from us. It was no fluke she made it that far.
Kayane was a top tier player for years in Soul Calibur. She’d been playing at a high level since age 13. This is a brand new game for her. I expect, if she puts as much time into SF as she did SC, she’ll be right up there with Ryan Hart in Euro bracket placings.
I agree with you 100% on the “idiotic statements” bit. My first post in the thread was arguing against the notion that women are inherently inferior, and the “decades of science” I refer to are the decades of twin studies and etc that basically show that how people are raised has more to do with their personality than sheer biology. In other words, women aren’t as skilled because society still has a ways to go, not because women belong in the kitchen.
Kinda shot myself in the foot with that parting snipe at BurnYourBra, I suppose, but I meant it in kayfabe for the most part and would love nothing more than to eventually be taken to the scrubhouse by her and other female players.
If it takes a segregated event to encourage her and others to practice to the point where they can do that, then so be it - as long as we’re not still holding Women’s Invitationals in 2150 when all of society’s problems have been solved and trans-oceanic lag-free online gaming is no longer a mere dream.
I took your statement - the one I quoted - as personally directed, which is more my fault than yours. It still seemed like you were saying the equivalent of “stop talking about rocket science in my thread about the Space Shuttle”, but given that a lot of the posts were the equivalent of “the moon landing was faked!!! by JFK and freemason lizard Jews who did 9/11!!! moon people are hot I WOULD HAVE SEX W/ THEM”, I guess I can’t fault you. :wgrin:
I’ll hold off on publically posting the point-by-point examination of my statement (trust me, it’s for the best), but rest assured there is one, and you’ll be getting it - oh boy, will you ever be getting it - in PM :badboy:
I don’t know whether things are grossly different in the states/canada, and this may just be a european/uk perspective; but I did a quick tally of my friends list.
Out of the people on there who I play Street Fighter with a little more than 30% are women. Now this is hardly a 50/50 split, but its also far from some tiny minority.
I always considered this to be about the norm, and I’m a little surprised when people spout some of the crap they do. My missus was actually asking me why if they have a separate women’s tourney they don’t have mixed doubles like in tennis et al, I didn’t have a convincing answer.
She did remind me though of the last episode of Pure Pwnage, where some tubby bastard sexist prick is being an arse to a female combatant. Now this obviously a stereotype exaggerated for comedic effect, but I’m sure people like that are all too common, so I’d understand why some people may be discouraged from tournament play. I remember the last tourney I went to, not that there are many here in the uk :(, there was some waste of skin who claimed that the only reason he lost was because he found the sound of my friends nails clattering on her stick too distracting.
I wasn’t expecting Daigo level play, but I was pretty disappointed at their performances… I know that there aren’t a lot of females out there that try to get good at fighting games, but this it was pretty subpar IMO. I mean, repeating the same combos, I felt like I was watching the same match every time these girls played, and wake up ultra… seriously? I hope the event inspired some girls to get into the scene and show a better performance than what happened this year.
I go to tourneys with my friend, and although she isn’t that great, she has never ran into someone who treated her differently when she picked up her stick. But in the end, this tourney was here just to show that women do attend these types of gatherings, and that they shouldn’t be “afraid” to attend them. Though I do admit I would’ve thrown out the entire tourney just for that golden TE stick.
Anyways, thread has lived out it’s natural cause, can a mod please close this?
“I came to the conclusion that the gap between male players and female players is still very big.”
This makes no sense. A persons Sex has nothing to do with Street Fighter. Women can be stronger, faster and smarter then men and vice versa. All of this discussion over whether women can compete with men in a video game is dumb. Burnyourbra and Kayenne could probably beat half the people that entered evo with ease.
If Daigo or Mago were women, would they not be as good?
I’m not going to make one of my long posts because 1. the tournament is done with and 2. I don’t want to risk getting banned (I got the last thread closed for “trolling”… I can take a hint)
I just wanted to say Sherryjenix was completely provoked, which is what caused the outburst after the match. It’s highly possible the same thing would have happened even if she had won. I think there are few in this community who could stand the amount of shit-talking she had to endure, so please look into the situation closer before you judge people; I did.
I also don’t think this was caused by the nature of the ladies tournament or anything like that. Same thing was likely to happen if they ran heads in the regular SSFIV tournament, if they set up a grudge/money match, or pretty much anything that would give them (or maybe just one of them) an audience. Personalities conflict.
As for the actual ladies tournament… I wasn’t there so I don’t know how it went, and I heard mixed opinions. I still think there are more cons to this tournament than pros, and I’m disappointed at the rude comments towards the players and how there were more cameramen behind the setups shooting the girls themselves, rather than catching footage of the actual matches. I thought that was pretty disrespectful, among many other things, but what’s new.
Congratulations on your gold stick, Kayane. I’m a lot more impressed how far you got in the real tournament than in winning the ladies tournament though. I wish we had Kayanes and Chocos in the U.S. but I think that will happen eventually and I’m just as excited as everyone else to see who it will be, and how many. I just think promoting women in the FGC should be done very differently.
being from tx myself im curious as to where Burnyour BRa is from. Doe sshe compete in loal tournys or is she only online? anyone know?
Her matches were pretty hype. knocked into losers and then comes back into finals against the heavily favorited “pretty” girl. Would have made a decent movie if she won… ah wellz
Also just wondering but are women general better then men at ANY video game? I assume men would naturaly be better at reflex based games, but what about puzzle games or timming based games? Anyone keep up with the DDR / Peggle / puzzle fighter. ect scene?
