Why were there few fighters (esp Capcom 2d) on nintendo 64?

The thing about Nintendo is that popularity isn’t at the forefront of their ajenda, inovation is, which even to this day they succeed tremendously with. In repect to this subject, there was nothing wrong with the N64, it just wasn’t designed for 2D graphics, making it a bad choice for 2D games.

As for what I think about the N64, it was freaking awesome. M64, OoT, MM, GE, PD, SF64, WR64, FZX (fastest racing game of it’s time IIRC), DKR, DK64, I mean come on. That might only be a handfull of games, but each and every one demonstrated the power of the machine. Sure it couldn’t render detailed textures as well as the PSX, but the games were huge and far more immersive, especially with the new control schemes Nintendo designed. Anyone who hates on the N64 is missing out on a wonderful machine and a one which was critical to the evolution of video games as we know it today…

The N64 was the Fighters Destiny machine… and thats the best shit ever.

The best games for the N64 were usually 1st/2nd party, not many of them either, outside of that you were lucky to see Good non-nintendo titles get the N64 effort.

Yay revolutionary hardware with only a meager, pathetic handful of good games to play, in comparison to all the great stuff that was regularly being released on other systems.

And when that handful of titles got old & boring like ALL games inevitably do regardless of how good they are, the N64 just proceeded to collect dust, much like the gamecube after it.

Gamecube owner: “Wow Resident Evil 4 rocked the house and i’ve beat it 6 times…but, goddamnit i just GOTTA play something ELSE now!”

So what if it sold better than some and was a Great title? That does not mean i want to play the SAME damned game forever and not go to anything else.

But then your options as a gamer were severely LIMITED if all you had was an N64 in those days. Remember, Goldeneye or nothing kids…

My God. You have this deep-rooted N64 hate. Did you get beatdown with a cartridge when you were a kid?

You know what? I’m going to get a N64 to PS3 converter and then play you in SFIV and pick Gief.

You will soon realize the true power of the grandfather of analogs…

The Wii is not fucking innovative.

Period.

I want Nintendo to sue Sony for PSN version of Rag Doll Kung Fu.

the controllers were not really made for 2d fighters, n64 had some of the best games ever, mario, zelda, mario cart, kirby, sin and punishment, turok 2, ogre battle, wipeout, goemon, paper mario, your all just hating. i thought it was against the rules to hate on consoles anyway.

Yeah, because controlers have always had motion sensors and used IR technology… But I guess the two generation old analogue controlers are inovative enough for you…

Whether you like it or not, it’s inovative…

Perfect Dark and Goldeneye were the shit.

/thread

It had Clayfighter 63 1/3 and it’s revision, Sculpturer’s Cut - arguably the worst intentionally made fighter that ever existed, so that satisfied my FG needs on the '64 pretty well.

Seriously though, I guess it’s the cost and the memory limitations that didn’t help in putting in more fighters on the console.

LOL @ these Nintendo haters though. I didn’t realize I was back on the Game pro forums.

why is nobody talking about Conkers Bad Fur Day? that was the best game of all time. let alone pretty much the first game where cussing and grotesque subject matter was allowed. and the AMAZING multiplayer it had. truely this game alone should prevent the N64 from receiving anymore flak

i know its not a fighting game, but still.

Amen, the multiplayer was the best times I ever had with games back then. Truly one of the best games RARE ever made. The xbox one was weak as hell, though.

Yeah, I knew you were going to say that.

Its not the first console to use motion sensing technology. Do some quick research on google…

There’s so many other pieces of hardware and titles that have used this in some way or another that to say the Wii “innovated” it is a complete lie. It may have used motion sensor technology as one its main selling gimmicks, but it did not “innovate” it.

All this and yet, no mention of WWF No Mercy.

STILL one of the best Wrestling games ever made and the main reason I bought an N64 again, ontop of everything else mentioned here.

I already explained why i hated it. Back in the day i was one of those sad individuals that plopped down $200+ for a crappy N64 near launch date, only to have the thing collect dust for 8 or so months before i realized what a terrible mistake that buy was.

Fighting games such as Capcom’s stuff was always and STILL is one of my favorite genre’s of all time. A genre which nintendo decided didn’t need to be on the N64 for the most part, and future consoles after that.

The trend which continued even to this day. PS2 got a godly library of great 2D & 3D fighting games, far eclipsing even the DC. What did the gamecube get aside from CVS2, SCIV, and smash? Nope thats about it.

And what of Street fighter IV, where is it? Not on the Wii that is for damn sure and i don’t hear any nintendo reps clamoring for capcom to make a port for it either. Because as usual, if its not a smash bros title, the little N otherwise does not give a damn about the genre.

Just for sake of being on topic with thread, we pretty much all agree that Fighters Destiny(1) was god tier right?

Good.

@ True Grave
Umm, what’s the only system that currently has TvC??

I will give you a moment to answer. If you love Capcom as much as you say you would’ve copped a Wii, and now especially since TvC is hitting the US. I don’t even fuck with Nintendo from N64 onwards but you just had a brain fart there. Your grudge is with Nintendo as a company man, but we’re talking about the N64 as a system. I can feel your pain, I guess, but if your rant gets close to my precious Mario Kart 64, you better brace yoself fool.

Such as?

Hell no, not supporting that terrible company with my money, and i wouldn’t buy another system just to play 1 game on it anyway.

I also wonder what capcom japan was smoking by putting the game on Wii to begin with, and how it got past nintendo’s radar at that.

Edit: And it does not matter if we’re talking Nintendo as a company or the N64 as a system, BOTH suck and are not worth my gaming dollar.

The XaviXPORT made by SSD Company Limited was the first console to technically use and implement motion-sensor technology into games. And hell even Nintendo did it before the Wii with Snes, most notably Laserbirdie, and a few others.

And of course, arcade systems have had motions sensor technology gimmicks before that, and then remember stuff like lightguns, Sony’s PS2 eyetoy, etc. all count as motion capture technology.

Like I said the Wii may have made it its big gimmick (and that’s all it is) but they were not the first ones to do it, and when they did it didn’t even start on this console.

Dunno why you are asking me to explain myself though since you supposedly should know all this as you’re acting like Nintendo is the master of inovashun, and if you didn’t you could have used a websurfer’s best friend.
