Sony/MS haven’t charged for certification on patches for over a year now, they stopped doing so quite a bit before the PS4/XBone came out.
Super SF4 was created because the original SF4 engine wasn’t setup to support DLC characters. AE was created likely because they were releasing on PC and the arcades as Super was never released on those platforms, they probably could have just made it purely DLC though outside of PC platform. Ultra I think was created as a whole package due to the length of time since AE was released back in 2011, it was a way to push the brand back into the limelight for general public. Plus the name change was to try and emphasize it was supposed to be a big deal update unlike AE2012.
I wouldn’t bet on SF not hitting a non-Sony console, ever. If we’re talking the imminent future? Sure. But “ever”? The only way for Sony to make it 100% sure SFV (in a form or the other) never gets to a console other than PS4 would be if Sony bought either the SF IP or CAPCOM itself. Which, to my knowledge, is not the case.
Quotes and official statements are far from being the end-all and be-all when it comes to this sort of stuff. As a matter of fact, we only have very limited info still. Actually, I doubt the details of the Sony-CAPCOM deal will ever be disclosed to the general public. Also note: deals, like anything else man-made, can always be ended in advance of its expiration terms.
Yet, I don’t think it’d simply take rebranding the game (Super Ultra SFV edition) for CAPCOM to void the exclusivity deal entirely (unless Sony-lawyers are a bunch of morons, that is). Give it a year or two though, chances are high it will eventually happen (still, this is assuming CAPCOM doesn’t go bankrupt or is sold in the meantime).
So yeah, the “PlayStation 4 will be the only console Street Fighter 5 ever appears on,” quote needs be taken with the usual grain of salt.
And I mean this with all due respect for those who might think otherwise.
As for the OP: I honestly don’t think SFV being PS4 exclusive is going to hurt sales too severely. Fighting games are somewhat of a niche genre, and their user base tends to be comprised almost exclusively of hardcore gamers. If SFV proves to be a good game, than most fans will want to own and play it no matter what, either by grabbing a PC copy or buying a PS4.
Maybe SFV will sell a few hundred-thousands copies less than it could if it wasn’t an exclusive, but nothing catastrophic like losing 50% of it’s potential sales or anything like that.
in all honesty, I wish all games were cross platform, considering how many games are available on all consoles. I hate being unable to play NHL with friends who have it on PS3/4. Same goes for virtually any other game out there.
Console dev’s need to go back to making games for gamers, not so their publisher’s can get rich
Xbox division, being the anti-consumer motherfuckers they are, doesn’t care about cross platform multiplayer, but people are still buying that piece of shit, so I can’t feel bad for those who won’t be able to play SFV on Xbone.
You made a bad decision right from the start by buying this console, now deal with it (and enjoy Killer Instinct)
Ultra was created as a standalone product for just about the same reason as AE, to try to get players who hadn’t bought SFIV be able to buy the game easily.
That’s not true at all. Sony doesn’t have to buy CAPCOM or the IP. If Sony puts up development dollars and Capcom uses them with an agreement that the SFV series is PS-only, then that’s it. Direct Sony monetary involvement and a contract will do the job just fine. I’m pretty sure Xbox is dead this gen for SFV and related titles – maybe they’ll get lucky with a spin-off down the road or something.
Dead Rising 3 is XBO (and PC) exclusive so it’s not like Capcom haven’t had exclusivity deals on Microsoft’s console with one of their IPs. It’s probably the only game I want as well, but I can wait, I’m glad that my style of fighting games are all gearing towards one console, simplicity, no bull shit.
I think that maybe marketing sealed the deal with Sony. If Sony has exclusivity, they’re going to advertise the game because they can say “PS4 console exclusive.” afterwards. These ad campaigns could run into tens of millions of dollars.
I’m guessing Capcpom took that number, added it to the number Sony’s co-development is worth, and decided that the total was more than what they made on xbox360 for X years.
It’s simple. Microsoft has KI as an exclusive. Sony decided to fight back and basically do their best to make sure PS4 is the system of choice for the FGC this generation by not only having more exclusive fighting games, but by also guaranteeing an easier upgrade path with peripherals that work on both generations of consoles and having the biggest game of the previous gen (Ultra) on their console as well.
From what I’ve heard, some folks are trying to get PC based sponsors for their events. I’m pretty sure MadCatz is looking into this, considering that the tournaments they’ve run (TGS) were run on PC.
Keep in mind that they will not lose all ex 360 buyers
Past 360 base is waaay bigger than current/near future Xone base
Many have switched or will switch to PS4
Many have turned PC gamers
Many have Xone but also a PS4
Many have Xone but also a good PC
Many will get a PS4 when exclusive cool shit get released (Bloodborne, Uncharted, The Order and so on)
Some will get a PS4 for SFV
Add to the math that
Sony given money$
As you said sony will be happy to pu$h the game with advertising
PS4 is the most sold console
Will likely become the choice console of FGC (GGxrd,USF4,SFV vs KI? lol)
Will likely become the choice console of japanese games fans
They allow cross-play
PC with cross platform play is definitely something that look good as a feature. Heck, Microsoft is now sending out feelers for a PC version of KI with possible cross-platform on their forums.
They should’ve released the game on PC much much sooner.
There was no way I was gonna buy an Xbox1 right from the start seeing how much they charge me for using my OWN internet, how they went full privacy invasion in their pre-launch announcements and how I despise the genre of games they tried to advertise their console with.
I was still interested in KI though and would’ve gotten it for PC if it would’ve come out earlier.
Sony shouldn’t have a problem with a PC release. Afterall, they have a completely separate game division that develops games on PC. It has crossover with PlayStation a few times.
Sony said themselves they were helping with development. On top of that, Sony is also porting SFIV to PS4. Seems to me this goes way deeper than just “paying for exclusivity”. If Sony has actual man power behind the product being made, how would anyone assume this could possibly get an Xbone release?
