They’re from an older generation of gaming. Super generic, lacking personality or stories. I’m not saying the current cast hasn’t got awful designs, but there’s nothing at all exciting about the old cast.
Adon, Gen, and Sagat have a fairly interesting storyline. Eagle is a pretty unique fighter amongst the cast And Gen’s style was greatly expanded upon having two stances. You can turn the oldest/generic of designs and have it flourish into something interesting.
Eagle is almost a must include, but yeah as has been said remember that Ryu, Ken, Sagat, Adon, Gen, Birdie all originated from SF1. Look at how much they were developed both aesthetically and gameplay wise. If other SF1 characters appear, they will be greatly expanded upon people seem to not be taking this into consideration.
If Retsu appears he will have much much more than the 2 or 3 moves he had in SF1, his look will be dramatically altered probably to look like a badass shaolin monk, and his story will be expanded upon as well.
It does? Why? Gay is just sexuality not really going to add anything to diversity. Besides which there is already Poison (gay male pre op TS), Zangief (supposedly based on gay stereotype), Juri (bisexual maybe lesbian), Eagle (supposedly according to wiki).
As far as old men, I doubt Gouken is making the jump. Gen might, so I think Retsu would be cool.
Even though a lot of people seem to be against Geki for having a generic design, I’ve always wanted him to make a comeback for well over a decade at this point. Does it really matter that his design is generic, though? Ryu and Ken look like generic karate fighters, while Chun Li’s design is generic and stereotypical, but all of them are staples of Street Fighter, regardless (and I do like them, but let’s be honest here). Heck, Birdie’s come back and he’s just a generic thug, though they did change him up a bit by changing his race and giving him a chain. But that’s the thing, Geki could still be tweaked to make him more interesting (I still think he looks cool, personally, though).
Bottom line is that you can’t really judge any of the SF1 characters by their movesets, since they were unplayable in SF1, and the ones that came back got overhauls to their fighting styles.
Ryu and Ken are regular-looking karate dudes that were successful due to great movesets. Chun is objectively one of the best characters ever designed, because of her looks and moveset. I don’t think Ryu and Ken types are enough in 2015+ for fickle modern gamers, they need design too. Which is why I think Capcom will risk another Fuerte or Hakan before considering another regular-looking karate dude.
I swear makoto’s face looks kinda chubby. Like a squirrel’s cheeks. I don’t know why but it does. Its really weird. I’m not a huge fan of makoto. Karate doesn’t really catch y eye. But I do like her scarf. Funny for about a month when I first got into SF (SF4 was where I started) I sear I thought she was a guy for the longest time.
My main interest is Retsu. He is a pretty cool design, and he could bring a very legit style of martial arts:
THOSE EYEBROWS! B|
Joe does look cool too, in the artworks, great attitude:
If they don’t inspire too much of original moves, they can always give them some weapon, like they did with Maki from Street Fighter Alpha. I’d say nunchuks for Joe and a bo staff for Retsu
If they’re as “good” designs as some recents like Rufus, Juri or Hakan, that seem more like taken out from a damn freak show, I definitely prefer the more serious and down to Earth characters from Street Fighter I.
