These are probably the three biggest reasons why I don’t see myself playing the newer 2-d fighting games as well. During the height of the Fighting Game Era, almost everyone played fighting games, the atmosphere was incredible, the competetion was great, but most importantly the drive to wanting to learn and become better in a fighting game was extremely high.
I believe this is the biggest factor into why new 2-d fighters don’t recieve alot of play, and yes, there are many other possibilities and reasons that in which I did not state. However I feel, that it shouldn’t be up to the same old people to having to keep on trying to revive this genre. If you yourself honestly feel that a new 2-D fighting game deserves some recognition, then try to make a small community for it, band a group of players who are willing to play the game, while wanting to learn and raising the bar in that particular fighting game.
Post it up in fighting game forums such as srk here and express your feelings about a particular fighting game that your trying to get other people to try and play. Sure you’ll get some negative and most definetly arrogant feedbacks, but there will be some who will say “Hey, wow, this actually does infact look good, I might give it a shot too.” Who knows, you’ll hit and miss, mostly miss alot, but the hits I believe will be worth it.
It’s just that, not saying this for other people either, but from my own experience, some if not many of the younger generation of players just don’t want to push themselves or try to make a community. They instead would rather have the older players throw them the bone while they pounce on it, to me, I find that depressing. Either that, or they just dont’ really care for wanting to learn how to play a fighting game, because let’s face it, and compare your average day fighting game to your average day MMORPG, or FPS…just tell me which game is easier to get better, look cooler at, and impress people.
My point exactly, to me, if the new fighting games want to take off, it has to start with a community, and not only that, I believe the newer generation of players have to start recognizing and actually doing something about it, not waiting for players who used to play heavily back in the hay day to do everything and make things happen all the time, not saying it shouldn’t be that way, but hey, alittle help from time to time would be great.
In the end, if you want one of the new 2-D fighting games to become recognized, do something about it, don’t sit there and wonder why nobody is playing it if you believe it’s got potential. Again, remember, this is my opinion so don’t be hating if you disagree with what I feel.
Oh, and on the notion of the whole Capcom players are better vs. Snk Players are Better…seriously…wtf are we doing stabbing ourselves on the feet, where a dying breed and yet where still bickering about “My Series is Better Than Yours…my penis will outwit yours!” arguements…I mean, come on, we need to group together and help support one another’s fighting games so that we can keep on going, no matter what the differences are.
