Why most US fighting gamers dont want to play new 2D fighters?

Trust me I plus others have already been working on this tataki…

Beat you too it…lol.

If Japan beating us at EVO lured people to play.then why can’t an SNK US Vs. Japan event at EVO2007 lure the masses as well??

See where I’m going with this? Me and others do a lot of work behind the scenes trying to brainstorm what we want to happen and how we will make it happen…

What you see in the thread is like 50% of what is actually going on…

damn man don’t ride his dick too hard it’ll make your butt sore.

I always though it was just me. Holy crap.

Seriously, in general Guilty Gear players weird me out. Not people who play Guilty Gear also, that’s usually a toss-up. But people who are Guilty Gear exclusive have in my experience always just been oddball. I’ve played SF and Marvel (even though I still hate it) with any number of different types of people in houses and hotel rooms and junk, and I can’t think of once where I was half as uncomfortable as the times I tried to do the same with a bunch of Guilty Gear people. There’s just something different going on there. It’s genuinely creepy.

N

Here’s an idea. All you guys who have posted that GG players are weird, creepy, or just plain freaks, please just come out and be honest. You don’t like a these people because they associate with a game you can’t play. This speaks of a deeper condition within you that you must group people into little sub-cultures that you can attack because of your own hidden agendas and fears. I would like to see this thread move in a more useful direction than slandering of people. If this is to carry on, the thread might as well just end.

I’m really being as balls-out honest as I can here, I wouldn’t just talk shit for no reason. There’s some weird shared undercurrent in Guilty Gear-specific players that weirds me out. Every time I’ve gone to any sort of GG event it just feels… uncomfortable. I like Guilty Gear and I can play it, that has nothing to do with anything. Most of the people I know who play Marvel or 3s and then learned Guilty Gear (or vice versa, even) are completely outside of what I’m talking about, and THEY SAY THE SAME THING. The Guilty Gear community has some weirdness going on, and if you really don’t know what we’re talking about then you’re either intentionally ignoring it or you’re “one of them”.

N

How about people actually know how to play gg, but 1. don’t like the gameplay 2. don’t take it seriously. Most GG players spew the same thing: “you don’t know how to play”, and this is when the topic of gameplay never comes up. Lemme play devil’s advocate here, let’s say anyone who plays SF doesn’t know how to play gg, and let’s say these same people can’t play tekken, then why is it you never hear them call tekken players strange???

As a former hardcore GG player, allow me to throw in my 2 cents:

caliagent and Thongboy are 100% right. Seriously!

Obviously it’s hard to claim 90% or more of GG players like anime, but it’s got to be a rediculously high percentage. Hell, odds are even the GG players who don’t watch anime would STILL like anime; they just don’t know it yet. Anime expos helped spread GG in the first place, and the two crowds overlap more often than not to at least some extent. I myself hate anime yet keep finding myself watching the damn stuff, but that’s another story.

This relates to Thongboy’s claim as well. I can be a pretty weird guy, but compared to some GG players, it’s like I’m the shining posterchild for Middle America. Even among good players, you’ll find a wide variety of personalities to say the least. If you don’t believe me, try hanging out with Veteru, Final Showdown, and James/Jamie Austin. Nothing against those guys personally, as we’re all on pretty friendly terms. But you’ll quickly realize that the player base for GG is just as colorful and…let’s say diverse, as the game’s characters. Not saying that’s bad, just telling it like it is.

Tekken players consist of alot of black people and i know thugs that get down in Tekken…GG is anime people…i dont think they wanna piss off the tekken players if ya know what i mean.

Thongboy:
I have no doubt that you’re being honest about the fact that you feel uncomfortable around some people. Everyone is uncomfortable with the behavior of at least some people. What I am worried about is that you are attempting to back up the argument that others have made that GG player are people who we shouldn’t associate with, through negative implication of their “culture.” This sort of faulty line of argument also manifests itself around not just SRK, but any discussion that tried to find someone to blame.

You can’t just apply your own experiences to the whole fighting game community in the first place. In my case, I started playing CvS2 and 3s with a group of friends who were heavily into watching anime/playing magic, and any number of socially unacceptable kinds of activities. I only moved onto GG with the release of Slash, desiring something new to play. Almost everyone I’ve met that plays SF watches anime. I’m sure that very few people who post on SRK don’t either watch anime or read/collect comics, both which would seem very nerdy to the general public.

Just please don’t fall into this corrosive line of discussion. I think something more useful to talk about is why the general populous of the US does not generally look for something that makes them stand out, and how this plays into why few actually want to put so much effort in learning to play a fighting games, when no one really gives a damn.

i still fail to see your guys point.

and the end of the day were all playing fighting games so who gives a fuck really, it just sounds like youre makign excuses not to play the game and the community discussion about gg players being creepy is just the icing on the cake.

i think zinac nailed it pretty well.

i dont like gg, but its just cause i dont like the engine, nothing more. i could care less if these people are weird or not, at the end, were all playing fighting games so whatever.

edit: as said before in this thread, Justin really does watch anime hardcore. in fact i would go as far to say as hes a anime nerd. but so what? it doesnt have to do with anything.

edit: if theres anything to say about tekken players, its that they start way too much beef over their own games irl/outside the game. they might not be weird in the traditional sense, but they have a whole other subset of problems.

LOL@GG players weird!!!

In all truth they are weird as hell…but they still good peoples

I’m sorry, I didn’t read the rest of the thread, just this last bit. I wouldn’t make such a broad generalization normally, I’m just really kind of surprised (and dismayed) that other people had the same experience. If it was another game I’d say the same thing, I really genuinely LIKE Guilty Gear. Hell, one of my next 2 videos should prove that very handily (shhh). I don’t know if any of the people I mentioned before watch anime or collect comics, I really didn’t know much of anything about them except that we were going to play a bunch of Guilty Gear. But I’ve played 3s, Virtua Fighter, even Marvel and Cvs2 (the last two I overtly dislike, Guilty Gear as a game ranks above them for me) with a LOT-lot of different types of people, and it’s only been when it’s with a bunch of people who only play Guilty Gear that I’ve felt really uncomfortable. It’s not the arguable nerdiness outright of any one thing in particular, hell, I hang out with MikeZ more than most of my “non-SF” friends even, and he’d tell you himself that he’s no prize (haha, fuck you Mike!). But he’s still fun to hang out with, and that’s how I know it’s not about that.

There are weirdos galore in the SF community, no doubt. But the only time I haven’t been able to just shake it off and be cool with everybody anyway was around the Guilty Gear-only people. I don’t know why it is, and it’s not like I’d prefer it this way, I really like Guilty Gear and would like to be able to play it with more than the 3-4 people I already play 3s with.

Ya, this can only go bad from here. I’ll stop enabling the hate, haha.

Well I think in summation the question was “Why most US fighting gamers don’t want to play new 2d fighters?”

The Answer is blatantly fucking obvious after reading like the last 4-5 pages…Prejudice case in point…

umm why are people making stereotypes like that anyway?!?!
“i played a group of gg players who were weird so that
must mean the whole guilty gear community is weird” wtf lol
how old are u guys again?!?!

Because we all live in different areas but have the same story. That doesn’t strike you as odd? If it were crop circles you would eat that shit up.

N - I thought we agreed to let this go?

Man even in the srk community there is still stero-types. we’ve dropped race and picked up a games we play. I darn near play all the fighting games that come my way from the good to the bad so what does that make me? why most everything be segragated. has social programming seeped itself so far into are subconscience that we discremenate based on game here and not race(don’t trust the tekken players they might rob you… Leave the GG players be you might find yourself drinking blood and having an anima orgy…stay away from the SF players they worship akuma…) damn this is sad for the next generation of gamers I’m starting to think that online gameing should completely take over. Fuck

The only thing I hate about the whole anime and GG is when going to an expo, all these cosplayers dress like GG characters yet they don’t know how to play the fucking game:lame:

Don’t mess with KOF players because a majority of them are thug Mexicans!!

So don’t mess with Black or Mexican thug players!

White and Asian players are completely harmless:wow:

This man speaks the truth.

Wow this thread is getting out of hand…I know the mods lurk guys so please lets try to stay on topic before it turns into a hate fest with literal racial slurs thrown out at each other.

Back on topic from like 8 pages ago:

I think there just haven’t been any decent games lately that have a wide enough appeal to get a player base. I mean really, what’s come out in the last year or two that has the strength of a CVS2 or a 3s? Tekken kind of fell apart being PSP-only (console-wise), so it never even had a chance. Even people who would want to start up Guilty Gear are now going to wait since Accent Core was announced. What else is there? DBZ Sparking Neo is too niche, even though it’s a huge niche. Melty Blood isn’t broad enough to grab the audience it needs to get heavy rotation, and without a console release it’s got no shot anywho. So what are we left with? Virtua Fighter’s never had legs in the US, though we all acknowledge it’s great. Is there even anything else out?

N - We could all wait for Skullgirls, haha.
