go back and read my a couple posts before my the one you quoted. I said 98% of gg players watch anime. I know only a handful of people who play/played GG and don’t watch anime, and the other ones i do know who play the game watch anime. I’m not making fun of anyone, just stating a fact that people seem to take offense for. I didn’t bash the game, or the people that play it (although some of them are kinda strange like eps said). What is wrong with you people? Can’t you read? He just said that a large percentage of GG players watch anime. Are any of you truly disputing this fact? That’s absolutely ridiculous, go to any tourney or gathering and I guarantee at least 90% of the players watch anime. Go to an SF tourney, and you definitely don’t have that percentage.
He didn’t draw any conclusions at all from that. He just threw it out there. Some of you got really defensive and started babbling incoherently. That is ALL he said. He’s not the one that put a negative connotation on watching anime, YOU guys did. You’re defensive because you know something is wrong with you. Not quite. What you said first was “Everyone who plays GG plays it because it looks like anime.” Which is the original disputed point.
It’s not like there’s a lot of implied negativity, but the general attitude I see being displayed is the whole ‘people only play GG because it’s pretty and they are not old-school enough to understand that the gameplay is inferior to Capcom/SNK/whatever game I grew up on.’ There is just a general lack of respect for the game and the scene. It’s nothing new, I’ve been seeing it on SRK for a good couple of years. And it’s not like it’s wholly undeserved either. GG players tend to bring trouble on themselves because they see dumb bait like this and jump at it. All too quick to get defensive. It got to the point where I usually just tune it out and shake my head at the new guys who start blubbering over all the stupidity.
There are definitely plenty of ways to mock the fanbase of GG, but Tom has a point in that most of the players who have something bad to say about the game itself usually don’t know wtf they are talking about because they have no idea how the game is played. Instead, all they can do is mock the players for being anime fanboys or whatever and continue to imply that the game is no good because the people who play it are clueless. I have yet to see a valid argument as to why GG is such an inferior game.
GG players are weird, though. The Japanese players seem strange even by Japan’s standards, and a lot of the more famous Japanese gamers are already on the fringe of Japanese society, so you’re talking about some pretty strange motherfuckers. The American players are not only a little off, but a lot of them don’t know shit about their own game and won’t admit to it or don’t care about getting better. Hard to respect a scene like that. I’m hoping it will improve somewhat since Slash seems to have attracted more new players than any other version.

Being a foreigner, got this image of us players who are mainly in capcom games,and i find great that the VS series got success outthere,what i read in this thread goes the same way but i would say it happened this way that’s all!i noticed many countries had their favourites specific games.

I dont understand why everyone constantly looks to Japanese players to determine which games are worthwhile and which games are not. Clearly they aren’t the end-all when it comes to playing fighters. They don’t even really have a scene for the best game. Guilty Gear? 3rd Strike? Fuck that shit. MARVEL!

3rd Strike and (especially) the Alpha games have an anime look which I think works well, but the GG character designs, while also being anime, just don’t work for me. I think maybe they appeal to the more hardcore of anime fans? They’re also sort of linked to metal music, which may also explain why I don’t like 'em.
What the 2D fighting game world needs right now is a game with Alpha-style sprites, 3rd Strike quality animation, and Guilty Gear quality resolution. That’d get the punters interested.

competitive fighting games the way the rest of the world plays it is limited, you only improve with ur friends and say shit like “dont do this, do this” while the japanese go to the arcade and JUST DO!

And yes, I can see how some of the people in that clip give the scene a bad name (mr pause-the-game and mr butt-crack spring to mind). Props to the guy grabbing the mic tho, “I’m the guy you can’t select when you first get the game, with the question mark over his head!!!”
