Why is SNK vs Capcom Chaos a "bad" game?

There are several reasons as to why I don’t like SNK’s sprites (Outside of MOTW), all of which are reasonable.

The first and most obvious one is the resolution and sprite size, both of which are small. There isn’t really any excuse for this anymore. Either they spend the money and hire a company to whip out higher res sprites, or they should start making 3D games. I’m tired of looking at these characters, and “new” bad looking sprites isn’t actually new at all.

The second is their use of color, which is often based on on dull tones that don’t really catch your eye. Even if you prefer it, there isn’t much point to having 2D characters if you aren’t going to have a more interesting pallete.

The third problem is probably the most offensive. The animation is largely inconsistent and often bad. New characters often have a small set of moves and stances that animate well, then the rest of their attacks look like garbage. In many cases, even if the move is fluid, the animation itself is bad, riddled with akward looking angles, proportions, and sometimes even bad timing. Even if some characters look ok, the vast inconsistency between characters and move sets isn’t something to be proud of. Look at the difference in animation between claw Vega and Ryu. based just on how they move, they don’t even look like they are from the same game.

Aside from just sprite animation though, they haven’t beefed up their affects in a while, nor are their background ever interesting anymore (When they used to be hands down the best). I can’t say a brown abandoned factory and railroad track are that cool to look at. I very much agree that Guilty Gear has problems visually, but it still looks hella better then ANY new SNK game.

Hopefully the fact that their next game after NGBC is going to be hi-res (finally) will alleviate all these problems people have with SNK sprites.

hi res, does not fix the animation problem

well fuck

They did make a 3D game.

And it’s not a matter of hiring a new company to make the sprites higher resolution. The drawings just need to be scanned at a higher resolution.

It’s not even worth arguing about whether the graphics are good or not, because if you made the graphics better you still wouldn’t change the fact that it’s a bad game. It would just dazzle people for a little while longer before they realized it sucked.

I’m a big SNK fan (Kamui knows this), and even I have to say that I don’t like SvC Chaos. The problem for me is that it got really boring really quick. It didn’t offer a lot of new things character-wise. None of the new additions interested me, and my standard characters (Terry and Ken) didn’t offer anything new. Gameplay was a little bit sluggish for my tastes (and I hate 2-button grabs).

I had no problem with the character graphics either. The backgrounds were totally uninspiring though. Hell, CvS1 had somewhat interesting and dramatic backgrounds (I loved PaoPaoCafe and Takuma’s Dojo). CvS2 had beautiful dramatic backgrounds that were exciting (London Street, Nairobi, G.Rugal stage, Arena, etc). Music was uninspiring (evenCvS1 has better music IMHO). I didn’t care about character graphics considering this was a NeoGeo game (still, AOF3 character graphics look beautiful compared to any KOF character, IMHO). For the record, I feel that NG Battle Colleseum should have KOF quality, mainly for nostalgia reasons. It’s like the graphics are part of SNK’s culture. But then that’s going off topic, isn’t it.

At face value, SvC Chaos is what SNK fans (like me) wanted: a crossover game made by SNK. Problem is is that for me, the game was not exciting or interesting. It just WAS. Hell, I’d rather play CvS2 than that. And this is coming from a guy who likes SNK more than Capcom.

Thank God for Match of the Millenium and Neo Geo Pockets.

Both games suck.

CfJ sucks donkey.

And SvC sucks dirty balls.

But if I had to choose one I’d go with SvC.

SvC Chaos Graphics suck, no one in the arcade where I live plays that game. They should get rid of that machine.

People always complain about graphics. But I ask this: if Marvel vs Capcom 2 was the same game but with stick-figure vector graphics, would people still play it? How about Street Fighter?

Even if it had gt4 graphics it just gives ppl one less thing to complain about. The game would still be fucken garbage. Toptier airthrows booya

It’s really funny to watch people argue about why and how this game sucks. People violently hate this game more than any other fighter I have ever seen.
Why do people passionatly hate this game so fucking much?

that’s cool if it’s personal preference but i’d say that cfj is obviously alot better than svc ever was hands down.

have you ever played the game?

it’s like the E.T on atari for fighting games or the superman 64 if you will.

i play this game and i still haven’t adapted

because it isn’t worth it.

As a Street Fighter fan, I didn’t like the way most of my favourite characters handled. The way the MP/HP and MK/HK things. And I couldn’t pull a Flash Kick to save my life.

yea, most snk games had those dull color, doesnt look please my eyes, while capcom used light and mild color, which look alot nicer even the sprite look bad in SFA series…another i dont like snk sprite is i think kof characters look thin and tall compare to other fighters…
as for SVC…i have nothing against it…im not a expert fighter or anything…i couldnt tell shit when i play it…all i know is i had fun playing with my friends…its not the best and not the worse neither…

I played it breifly on the break. I used Ryu and Genjuro to see how both Cap and SNK worked in this game, and also cause I was familiar with them. Genjuro played just fine. But Ryu was GARBAGE! The game is not made in favor of capcom cause of the fact that there are no mediums. In CvS capcom added mediums to the SNK characters and it worked for the most part. However in SVC it does not transition well and it downgrades the capcom characters. :lame:

Mediums weren’t consistent w/all the capcom guys. Ryu’s was 1b while Chun’s was 3b. Charge motions for the most part required either 4 or 2 rather than a universal charge. SOME boards had this fixed iirc

Well, before the whole CvS and SvC thing got started, Capcom fans and SNK fans were already at each others’ throats. The generally held belief was that SNK makes broken games while Capcom makes tournament-quality games.

Then came Capcom vs. SNK 2, which is a good game with the flaws that even a good game will have. It was popular and built up a competitive following even if there were balance issues. However, there were many SNK fans who felt the game was bad because their SNK characters weren’t exactly the same as their KOF counterparts (seriously, nobody complained unless it was a KOF complaint. Nobody complained how Terry didn’t play the same as he did in Real Bout 2). Therefore, CvS2 was crap.

It got worse once the top-tiers of CvS2 were solidified. Accusations started that Capcom purposely made SNK characters weaker because Capcom is evil and hates SNK (which I don’t understand why the two companies would work together if that was true). People started saying how if it was a KOF game, any SNK character would beat all the Capcom characters put together (probably using some kind of logic that pertains to the story, like Kyo being invincible when engulfed in his Kusanagi flames; not actual gameplay logic).

Finally, SvC Chaos was announced, and there was some gloating from the SNK folks. SvC was supposed to show all those Crapcommies what a real game was like. It was going to be 100 times better than CvS2, and the SNK characters were going to beat all the Capcom characters. While I never believed in any of this partisan bullshit, I know for a fact that SNK is capable of making good fighting games, and I figured this would be a project that they would pool all their efforts into to make it great. I tried to convince people when the screenshots and videos came out that they should play the game before dismissing the graphics. I thought that there really was going to be good gameplay behind it.

Well, I was wrong. SvC was not even close to being as fun as CvS2. I, like many SNK fans, was left with my foot in my mouth. Worst of all, most Capcom fans just assumed from SNK’s track record that the game wasn’t going to be good, and they were right all along. We built up this big hype for the game, and SNK shat all over us.

That’s why I violently hate SvC Chaos.

This game is still 50 dollars at the GameStop where I live. Pretty rediculous…

1.people prefer copys to originals so there no money going back into the industry to make games better

2.people who makes site like these now not all people most people slam or cuss a game before even trying it and it gets slated so others just join the bandwagon and dont buy it i remember most usa heads hated mvc2 just for the same reason without even trying it… now in the usa its one of the most played games

3.and yeah as for the guy above capcom are skanks cos in the snk documentry is said that snk only got 20% of the profits from snk1 snk pro & snk2 so they had rights to make there characters top class which is wrong in a way
having 46 characters spilt into 2 partys and knowing that the top 12 or 13 are all capcom does sound a bit shitty u know…

that shows how selfish capcom is + they left the production halfway for svc chaos as well
even if the game was gonna be shit or broken they never stayed to finish the job so watch out other companies if u decide to work with capcom and if they dont get there own way.

That’s called royalties. You expect SNK to get 50% of the profit for just sitting there while Capcom does all the work of designing (with help from SNK people, who probably got paid seperately), programming, and distributing? Capcom did the majority of the work, Capcom gets the majority of the profit. Welcome to the real world.

Capcom doesn’t try to make any character better than any other, and there’s no evidence to support a claim that they do. These things just happen. If you’re an SNK fan, then you should be well aware of the kind of flukes that are possible. coughDuoLoncough

Was Nakoruru the candidate they chose to dominate CvS1, so they intentionally overpowered her?

First of all, Capcom hasn’t done anything selfish. You’re just crying sour grapes.

Second of all, if I was Capcom and I saw the way SvC Chaos was turning out and SNK refused to make improvements, I’d leave too. Not that I believe Capcom left just to give SNK the shaft.

What about some other facts? SNK got 20% of profits from CvS, CvSPro, and CvS2. Is that a composite percentage of the three games, or an average? What percentage of profits did Capcom get for MOTM, CFC, and SVC? When you convert those percentages to actual amounts of money, who got more from the other company’s games?
