Why i think the Darkstalkers games need a next gen game

  1. What is that pill in Morrigan’s mouth? Disturbing. Anyways sex sells. However Capcom has done a really poor job promoting the series. Most people know darkstalkers through their appearances in Marvel games. So who do we get in those games? Morrigan, Felicia, Hsien Ko, BB Hood, and Anakaris (yay one male). Gives people the impression that darkstalkers was some perverted all female doujin fighter. However those who actually played the games know it is a majority male cast, and it is much more pandering to horror fans than perverts.

  2. As to why Darkstalkers Resurrection failed.

a) Vampire Savior was released in 1997, Vampire Hunter in 1995. They are super old. Other than ST, 3s and KOF98 90s fighters are largely ignored.

b) Darkstalkers has been ported a million times for every system, usually with the extra characters in both versions. Most people interested already own a port.

Anyways if SF4 is how Capcom handles its iconic Street Fighter franchise, maybe darkstalker fans have been saved from a world of disappointment.

You just said.

The fact the Darkstalkers “are known” doesn’t mean people like to play with them, or care about them, or that they want to play their game. I think no one was using Morrigan, BB Hood or Anakaris in MvC2, there were tons of characters there to pick from, probably many of the “casual” people who played the game didn’t even care to find out who those characters were and just saw them in a glance and that’s all. It’s not like Darkstalkers 4 is released and everyone will go like “Wow, I know that girl with claws! She was on Marvel Vs Capcom 3! I gotta buy this game!” If that was the case, probably there had been more Star Gladiator, Captain Commando and Sonson games. Or Mega Man games, LOL.

Mm? I’m pro a new Darkstalkers game. Just saying it is far from being a “necessary” thing. It may actually not be that succesful (and that’s what Capcom cares about).

The game has potential, I think some cool graphics like the ones of Soul Calibur 4 or the new Killer Instinct could do much for the game to be appealing, but I wouldn’t be mad if they simply left the series die and we stay with the original trilogy. It’s not like one of my arms are going to fell off because of that.

  1. Well tier whoring is prevalent and actually necessary in Marvel, which is why so many use Morrigan in MVC3, but not in MVC2 or MVC1. Really only the 10 or so viable characters in MVC2 were used, the rest were rarely seen. U didn’t see Chun Li much at all in MVC2, but she is maybe the most popular female fighting game character of all time.

  2. There are a lot of things going for a new darkstalkers being successful. The west is now much more accepting of over the top games and exaggerated animations. ArcSys games are thriving. Vampire Savior is still huge in Japan, so an arcade release there would do wonders. In addition, tons of people will buy any new fighter that is made by Capcom…cause its Capcom. Nothing is guaranteed, but solid gameplay and a good look (though hopefully nothing like KI which looks really dumb) would go a long way towards insuring success.

THIS! You can use all males to promote a game, but if you use all females, you will send the wrong message. Especially with a series that’s suppose to be horror themed. If more badass characters like Talbain, Raptor, and Demetri ( isn’t he suppose to be the star of the series? ) where promoted I think more would’ve gotten into the series. Maybe Morrigan could stay in the lime light. But as much as I like Felicia and Hsein-Ko. They need to take a backseat for a while.

@Magegg I’m not saying a new game has to be made. I’m not one of those foolish fanboys who be like “Darkstalkers 4 could save Capcom!”. I know Darkstalkers is niche and wasn’t a huge seller. But it has a cult following that still play Vampire Savior competitively to this day. I’m just saying when it comes to reviving a series it’s gonna be a risk. You’re either willing to take that risk or not. If Capcom’s not willing to take that risk, cool. But to try to have a re-release determine that for you is dumb. There could be a market out there for the series, maybe most people just didn’t want to buy a re-release of old ass games and where expecting something new.

No body posted this video, its talked at 2:40 in. I agree with James on maybe it wouldnt be a good thing for a new game. Capcom is incapable of making a great fighting game. Especially when one of the execs was talking about SF V being pay to win. If anything if they made DS 4 it would have the pay to win model to test the waters.

Im more than fine playing an “old” game with incredible graphics than a newer one with mediocre 3D graphics.

Oh wait, nevermind, they already ruined Darksttalkers.

Woooooow, the Darkstalkers Anime is far far FAR better to watch than the cheap camp throw away american cartoon. Im serious, watch this. Chun Li is even in it, wink wink.

Wow that asian dude has some awesome ideas, and seems really passionate about Darkstalkers. I’d love for him to be a lead designer for a new Darkstalkers. And yeah it may be for the best for Modern Capcom to not touch the series. Also Darkstalkers the animated series. Do we really need to remind people that happened? LOL.

I don’t think I want to see a new DS4. The stuff that makes Darkstalkers play so unique is very subtle. SF4 and MVC3 prove that not only did the developers not understand the subtle aspects of the game, but they also probably didn’t think these things could matter. By looking at the game before I ever played it I thought “hey its like 1v1 Marvel”. After playing (low level play I admit) the game I know that really isn’t the case. I wouldn’t expect Capcom to understand that though.

AsteriskBlue.

Very true. At first glance the earlier games looked like SF with monsters. But when you play them, you see the subtle things that make it play differently than SF. I.E air blocking. You’d think that wouldn’t be such a big deal but it is. It really changes up the gameplay, allowing players to move through the air easier. As oppose to SF where there is no air guarding. So you can just jump around because a poorly timed jump or a careless jump in will result in a punish. Also Vampire Savior is where MVC series gameplay came from, more or less. Hence why some people see Vampire Savior as 1v1 MVC.

As they said in the video “SFXT, SFIV and MVC3 are a hair’s width from being horrible”. I think like James Chen many darkstalkers fans are very passionate, those who’ve actually played the game see why it is so special and why it stands out so much from other fighting games. Many fans envision this magnificent game however there is dream and there is reality. Considering Capcom’s current fighting games, we can assume a Darkstalkers 4 would at best be mediocre.

The best thing to hope for is Capcom getting bought out by a company that still has a lot of talent on their staff.

though I did not watch the cartoon, I dont doubt the superior quality of the anime
yet as a whole it was rather average. too serious, depressing and dark with a very slow pace.they tried to follow the SF formula on this one, due to SF popularity. But DS is not SF

Pyron=M.Bison, Donovan=Ruy, Dimitri=Guile, Lei-Lei=Chun-li, Felicia=Cammy etc

SNK, despite featuring mediocre features too, had more polished adaptation than Capcom
eg Art of Fighting and SamSho OVA are better than everything Capcom has produced.

An american cartoon would have been better indeed, but not like the one above.
one co-produced with a Japanese studio, like it happened with Batman, Ducktales, Animaniacs etc

.

Petran79. I agree for the most part. I was able to sit through and enjoy each 40 min episode. However I too feel it’s WAY too serious and Dark. While lore wise it stays true to the games It doesn’t capture the feel of the games. The games while horror themed and dark, are also goofy and silly with funny attacks and damage animations and bright vivid colors. To me Darkstalkers looks like a classic Disney cartoon with a horror theme. As appose to being actually uber dark, scary and violent.

As lame as the American Cartoon was, it had the right idea just VERY poorly executed. It had the bright colors and it didn’t take itself too seriously with the story. It’s just that they bucthered the characters in both design and personality. The story was lame, just your typical good vs evil plot and nothing more. Darkstalkers lore allows for a way more epic story than that. And the writting was painfully cheesy. Like that Lord Raptor rap. There’s being silly then there’s going completely out of character

They chose Japanese studio Madhouse for the OVA. hence that peculiar character design with tall and skinny figures and the dark theme.
this had more in common with their darker adaptations like Ninja Scroll, X-Movie, Tokyo Babylon etc

surprised also they chose to add Huitzil, since Madhouse usually lack in mecha design

that studio is the complete opposite from Disney.
Telecom or TMS would have been better

Well guys…there will be Capcom panels at San Diego Comic con, and Ono will be there perhaps with a surprise or two? Could this be a new Darkstalkers!? Unfortunately we all know how Ono works.

God. I’ve reading this once and again and again and again for what? The last 7, 8 years? Just leave it die.

Capcom has gone on record saying they have no plans for Darkstalkers in the immediate future. And I don’t blame them, Darkstalkers just doesn’t make money. So I suggest just enjoy Darkstalkers Ressurection or Savior on GGPO. Honestly I’m glad they made Ressurection. I never played Huntef and Savior in the 90’s so it’s my first introduction to the series and I love it. Japanese players on ranked brutally kick my ass though lol.

You clowns should have bought the damn rehashes LOL! No use crying now.

Seriously, I hope they never bring another out. It’s game play and mechanics have been out-shined by waaaay too many games as it is. It would take them having to completely change it just to NOT be considered an unneeded entry. It would lose it’s identity very quickly and it will alienate a large margin of it’s fanboy contingency, whose central concentration is in this very thread.

Not that I care though. DS has been surpassed ages ago in most every way possible.

Just a mostly unbiased and boundary-centric note from a very rare, non-DS fan. I don’t like the game, but it’s fans make me hate it even more.
