All Darkstalkers fan should read this. It’s a really good read on why Ressurection didn’t sell so well and why it’s unfair to use its sales to determine Darkstalkers future.
I bought Ressurection because it was my first introduction to the series. But now I can see why most people passed on Ressurection and even hardcore fans. Capcom should be happy it even sold what it did, let alone the ridiculous expectations they had for what is basically the 3rd re-release collection of games that are now 17 and 20 yrs old respectively.
I was only a kid when Darkstalkers first came out so I wasn’t able to get into the series back then. But I play Vamipre Savior on Ressurection almost daily. I want to support the local scene but I can’t find one here in Georgia. But Vampire Savior does have a competitive scene. It was at this years Evo as a side. Also if you check the Darkstalkers thread I posted some vids of Vampire Savior at UFGT10, it’s pretty cool.
Lastly VH and VS sees most of its competitive play in Japan. Darkstalkers did very well over there and is still played over there. Hell Hunter and Savior is where some of Japan’s fighting game god’s first made a name for themselves. Most notably. Daigo’s win streak in Hunter and Sako’s BB Hood/Bulleta combos in Savior.
I think people over hype how popular the game is in japan like tekken players bring up korea. But you never see footage of a 1000 to 500 man tourney from either. Its a fairy tale. Like bigfoot or the lockness monster.
Just because it doesn’t do masive numbers doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a scene. I never said Darkstalkers was all the rage in Japan or anything like that. I simply said Japan is where Darkstalkers saw the most success and its scene is still active over there.
Nope, none of those really. I like fighting game designs with strong, pretty freeform movement and SFIV/SFxT are basically the antithesis of that. Marvel I don’t have a console for and BB just has zero appeal visually, so not interested. Not that I’m a serious VSav player to begin with though, but I think if you want recruits SF players are the wrong place probably. KOF players (apart from a certain idiot above) might be closer to the mark, VSav and KOF13 feel surprisingly similar to me.
Well IDK if you check the Darkstalkers Ressurection Thread, but I made a post saying that me and others are hosting open lobbies every week. Look it up. If you want people to play all you gotta do is look it up. Also no series ever needs a new game, it would just be nice to see a new game. Also a new game could get people interested. Most new gamers don’t want to play almost 20 yr old games.
No, it’s the opposite. Resurrection is a failure, that’s the reason people stopped playing it. Darkstalkers needs a reboot with a completely different gamplay to be succesful, not people playing an old game no one likes.
Blazblue is cool but inferior to Guilty Gear, still one of the best games this gen. SFIV was mildly amusing but oh so inferior to 3s and ST. I actually enjoyed SFxT cause it felt like SF (besides being too combocentric), unlike SFIV. I never played MVC3 much but X factor is really dumb, still there are a lot of cool characters in it.
A new Darkstalkers just needs a stunning modern presentation that retains the visual style of the old games. Needs to keep the core gameplay of Vampire Savior intact with some tweaks, add some characters, great soundtrack, call it a day. Guilty gear xrd is getting a lot of notice from people who never played the old games cause of how impressive it looks visually. BTW GG never exactly had a strong scene in the US either, the few players often commuted long trips to play each other. However Xrd will likely sell very well here…cause it is new, shiny, and looks good. There is nothing more important. (See below)
As far as getting a massive scene for Vampire Savior it just isn’t possible here. Most 90s games have tiny scenes if at all. Looking at the US how many people even play ST seriously? That probably has the healthiest scene of the old games but the point is most people don’t like old games, games that were around before them. Most people think SF4 is way shittier than 3s or ST but yet SF4 is a million times more popular. Cause people want new games, especially in the US. Old games can survive in Japan with its strong arcade scene, they can’t here.
Name another fighting game besides SFII, that’s as old as a HS senior that gets as much play. There a 100s of fighters that old, but only a few that still get played at all. That’s why I say, people who play VS and wanna build a bigger community around that are fighting a losing battle. The game is too damn old. They should be proud the game is still played at all, but them continuing to try is still quite noble.
I was just asking because people want DS4 but refuse to admit Capcom makes bullshit. You’re essentially asking for a mediocre sequel in a series that was pretty much a bright spot for Capcom.
Last Dragon. I agree. As much as me and the people I play with love Vampire Savior, the game is near 20 years old. No way today’s gamers are gonna be into it. Only a new game will grow the scene.
Magegg. Do you honestly believe you know what you’re talking about? Or are you just trolling?
I wasnt playing VS so much, mainly the older SNK games (arcades or emulation). but they more or less are similar.
to be frank, I was never interested in SF4. Saw the re-launch of that game in 2010 and regarded it as another cash-grab. Design was horrible and it played nothing like the old games. Capcom opted for the 3D look of Tekken, DOA and VF so as to attract players from those games. But this was like taking the worst elements of 3D and 2D design and adding them together.
MvC3 and SFxT followed that trend with the same questionable results regarding design.
I was surprised to find then that SF4 was so popular, while games like 3S and the older SF games were almost into oblivion territory.
While MvC2 at least retained more popularity than 3S.
Blazblue belongs to another territory and has a different audience. I didnt grow up with that short of fighters, since I didnt own a Playstation 2. But it had far more in common with the older 2D games than SF4, especially Last Blade and Samurai Spirits.
Main reason I got into SF4 was the online community and information available. Bought an arcade stick too but now I use it mostly for the older fighters. While in older fighters I dont mind training for hours, training in SF4 seems like a chore. Kudos to the people that can stand this…
Vampire Savior was a game I had overlooked back then. No arcades had it. I played Capcoms Versus series back then. So I decided to delve deeper into that game a little late.
Whoever buys them out needs to make the next Capcom fighting games 2D. They made SF4 to appeal to young people who are graphics whores and see 2D games as being obsolete and inferior. Now what did that get them? SF4 looked bad back then and looks bad now. I prefer the Alpha 2/3 graphics over SF4 graphics.
It is more than obvious that Darkstalkers needs a complete 180° change in gameplay. People kept on playing MvC2 played not because of the graphics because of the gameplay. Darkstalkers was not as good as to manage that, outside of the Japanese, the market for a game with Darkstalkers gameplay is very limited, as the game’s too demanding and too complicate for most people, even for hardcore fighting fans is too much.
They have to make it more casual and with pretty graphics. The concept is OK and attractive, the characters have good designs, personalities, superpowers and the movelists are all great and attractive. They just have to change the game system to something friendlier, it’s obvious the nowadays audience didn’t dig Darkstalkers Resurrection’s gameplay, they have to change it drastically.
Accept it or not, the gameplay is the problem and the reason people’s not playing the game.
