No, it isn’t. This is bordering on sensationalism.
Yep. Participate in them, too. Yet more reason why I strongly disagree with your opinion.
No, they’re not. FFS, they’re overactive kids spouting nonsense and memes in the hopes of “trolling” for attention. They’re not racists or misogynists. You don’t really think they believe a word of the crap they type, do you?
Most of it isn’t even anything you could realistically consider racist or misogynistic, and I’m not going to consider any of it a problem until I see it happening IRL. (Don’t make the mistake of confusing stream monsters with the FGC.)
Okay, now we’re into territory where we’re discussing the entire damned Internet, and not just a particular gaming community. Idiots with anonymity are going to rage and say dumb shit. Everywhere. In any community.
Where to start with this…
If I had a ¥1000 for every time I had a… ehh… let’s just call it an “awkward racially-related encounter” to keep it PC… with a Japanese person I’d have bought a house in Shibuya, found a nice girl, and settled down. And why not? After all, I’d be rich.
There are racists and misogynists in Japan, even within the gaming communities. Anyone who’s been there longer than a week or two, gamer or not, has probably had to deal with it in some form or another. That said, most people I met in Japan (gamers or otherwise) were cooler than the other side of the pillow, just like in the States. But, there are jerks everywhere. This is a “people” thing. Not a “North America” or “Japan” thing.
I’d be really interested to hear more on the completely different approach you mentioned, though. You have my interest.
I also find the use of the term “grow up” to be mildly ironic when discussing a community predominately made up of younger people, many of whom are still teenagers. I think I’m firmly in the minority at the age of 35.
Anyway, I’ll start believing that racism and misogyny are “running rampant” within the FGC when I stop seeing Blacks, Asians, Hispanics, women, etc. at events.
