Why Fighting Games Are Bad For Gaming [Supposedly]

Well… It’s comforting to know there was actually something to be learned from that wreck of a game…

EDIT: NVM… Just read 360… thought you meant that game on N64…

Because to really understand a culture you have to spend a lot of time with it. Making any type of commentary based on casual observations is destructive. This is why I tell errybody to avoid using the word culture since it comes with a lot more complicated issues than they likely understand. Unless you are a trained professional odds are really good that you should shut the fuck up on making any type of authoritative commentary on a group of people.

Finding all 300 of unique items is fine. donkey kong country did that and it is hailed as genius. The thing is it has to be done well. If all 300 are in plain sight and achieving is a matter of making sure you click the gem thingy that’s boring. DKC hid coins in each level, following some bizarre rules. As you learned the designer’s tendencies you got better at finding them. Until the designer started breaking his own rules intentionally. that’s smart and fun achievements.

I see lots of RPG achievements do things like kill 50k enemies. Really?

Then fighting games. Win streaks should never ever be an achievement. I don’t really care what they are though it is pretty obvious at this point what achievements should NOT be.

The best experiences I’ve had in my life have always been related to fighting games and the FGC.
This community changed my life in a positive way. I know there’s so many people in here who fee like I do.
If you want to get to know us, how bout we get some games in and compete? how about you beat me and force me to become better so we can then develop an unspoken bond that will last for years and years? Why don’t we have a discussion about what’s the best way to use a character? Why don’t you live the FGC first, and then form an opinion about it? Why don’t you realize that assholes in this world just happen to exist, and are not exclusive to the FGC?

I love the FGC…

The true achievement is that anyone even payed for this game in the first place. Even putting money down to rent it seems like a cardinal sin.

Last time i checked, the FGC is the people who participates on gatherings, the local scene, tournaments and/or helps to organize them.
Dumb fucks that only “participate” via watching streams asking “When is Marvel?” or saying “spooby plz” are not part of the community, But, i certainly agree that we need a better way to moderate those fuckers since they give the wrong impression to newcomers with all the massive amount of stupidity that they exude.

…and this is why I don’t understand why everyone is giving 2 shits about the article, and its author.

We’re just bored and love to argue and criticize. More importantly though, he wrote something insulting the vast majority of us so we have to gather together and fight him

No, it isn’t. This is bordering on sensationalism.

Yep. Participate in them, too. Yet more reason why I strongly disagree with your opinion.

No, they’re not. FFS, they’re overactive kids spouting nonsense and memes in the hopes of “trolling” for attention. They’re not racists or misogynists. You don’t really think they believe a word of the crap they type, do you?

Most of it isn’t even anything you could realistically consider racist or misogynistic, and I’m not going to consider any of it a problem until I see it happening IRL. (Don’t make the mistake of confusing stream monsters with the FGC.)

Okay, now we’re into territory where we’re discussing the entire damned Internet, and not just a particular gaming community. Idiots with anonymity are going to rage and say dumb shit. Everywhere. In any community.

Where to start with this…

If I had a ¥1000 for every time I had a… ehh… let’s just call it an “awkward racially-related encounter” to keep it PC… with a Japanese person I’d have bought a house in Shibuya, found a nice girl, and settled down. And why not? After all, I’d be rich.

There are racists and misogynists in Japan, even within the gaming communities. Anyone who’s been there longer than a week or two, gamer or not, has probably had to deal with it in some form or another. That said, most people I met in Japan (gamers or otherwise) were cooler than the other side of the pillow, just like in the States. But, there are jerks everywhere. This is a “people” thing. Not a “North America” or “Japan” thing.

I’d be really interested to hear more on the completely different approach you mentioned, though. You have my interest.

I also find the use of the term “grow up” to be mildly ironic when discussing a community predominately made up of younger people, many of whom are still teenagers. I think I’m firmly in the minority at the age of 35.

Anyway, I’ll start believing that racism and misogyny are “running rampant” within the FGC when I stop seeing Blacks, Asians, Hispanics, women, etc. at events.

That’s dumb anyway. Top half woman could suck your dick and you could suck dem titties. Win win.

Thousand people watching, like 100 typing in the chat is still a few. That’s only 10% ignoring the people attending. You’re condemning the entire “community” because of a small percentage of them being dicks.

All I ask for this thread is that you guys don’t prove him right. Please!

It’s far easier to shine spotlights on the oddball instances that really don’t reflect an entire community when we are one of the few gaming communities that actively meet IN PERSON, on top of streaming/recording damn near everything.

Online communities are holy shit worse, but that’s just it, they’re online so all you get at most is a soundbyte or screen shot with a gamertag to associate with it. I stopped playing most of that shit because unless you’re playing with friends, it’s quite possibly the worst thing ever. CoD, CS, a number of other FPSs. I won’t even touch LoL unless I’ve got friends online who want to play. I stick to single player and fighting games these days, because the amount of things that come as cross to me in the latter are so miniscule it’s hardly worth mentioning since so much good has come from it.

It’s impossible to be 100% free of negative output, because human nature always gives that random pop off that can be skewed to serve an article, top that with the face to face competitive nature of FG’s and it just compounds.

Its a variety of things coming together

  1. The FGC is surrounded by highly unintelligent viewers called Stream Monsters. They have the gall to call everyone who loses “Free” even if the person losing is Dieminion or Daigo.Stream Monsters revel in their ignorance and believe their “Freedom of Speech” is being infringed on when someone like Spooky loses it and says no more.

  2. To be fair, we do give off a bad and toxic attitude at times. For every member like UltraDavid, we have at least 2 Aris’s. Now, while I think politically-incorrect humor is hilarious, you need to remember most of the people who label us as “Bigots,Racists,Sexists” come from the outside world and typically don’t think or say the things we say. So when they watch an FGC stream and see 500 stream monsters creeping James Chen’s GF or something of that nature, they tend to create a picture around that.

3.Our community to be fair is primarily made up of poor people. Our pots are low in regards to tournament winnings and while I know that most of the “thugs” in the FGC are just big nerds who are more likely to talk about DBZ or the Avengers than do something illegal, we do give off a certain, “thuggish” look that some people do not like.

How we can solve this-

  1. No Stupid people on MIC- I watched a stream and some random guy decided to talk on Mic and I don’t think my IQ dropped that fast in my entire life.In comes a barge of just Anti-Homosexual slurs and then he even made up some, he only commented on the match like twice and the rest was him saying some bullshit and yelling. Now, I’m saying we need to have robots on stream who just relay the match but more people like Yipes, people who are funny but knowledgeable.

2.Paid Stream Chats- It won’t stop every troll but at least people benefit from their trolling.

People like the guy who wrote these articles should be invited to an event. Let him come to his own conclusions about the FGC.

Why do you guys think that the online fanbase (whether it’s stream monsters or online players) aren’t part of the community? I mean, I wish they weren’t (because of how much they overall embarass the FGC) but the reality is, they are part of it.

But in any case, the online community is like this whatever game you’re playing, unlike what the article seems to suggest. I was just saying that there definitely isn’t “just a few” of these kinds of players, they probably make up a large percentage of the entire gaming community.

Sometimes I like to watch stream chats to see the snowballing ramble of offensive nonsense. It’s proof that mankind can be collectively dumber than our individual parts.

Because they’re not. Stream monsters are not the FGC. Most of them don’t go to events or meet-ups, play IRL matches, or contribute anything. Sitting on a stream asking when Marvel starts isn’t a contribution, nor is it being a member of any community.

If streaming wasn’t a thing, you wouldn’t even know these people existed.
