Why does everyone hate the mortal kombat series?

I guess it’s because of the unique move lists on top of the constant threat of the universal normal attacks?which require more than the pressing of a single button (direction + button).

In the Capcom fighters, each character does have unique attacks, but they’re all single button attacks, and their special moves are in many ways very similar to the other characters moves?I’m talking about the half/full fireball motions, dragon punch motions, charge moves, etc.? followed by any of the punch/kick buttons. All of this is ideal for button mashers.

In MK, each character does have the same high/low punch/kick attacks, and they also have the same sweep (<+LK) and roundhouse (<+HK), etc… but most have a completely unique move list to memorize, and you can’t use either punch or either kick like the Capcom special moves (only HP or LP or HK or LK will work).

Add the block button factor to all of this, and it’s a lot to take in at first… and button mashing will get you nowhere.

As for the projectiles/zoning, yes they are completely different, and a matter of individual taste. The universal attacks do the zoning (sweep range, roundhouse range, uppercut, etc). The projectiles are less of a factor because you can fire a projectile of your own or block or duck under them or jump over them and “retaliate” (another perk of the MK series). Do any of you have dumbass friends whose only SF strategy is a constant stream of fireballs? I sure do, and although you can retaliate against it, it’s annoying as hell and is usually not even an option in MK because of what I previously mentioned.

EDIT: damn… been getting a lot of neg rep for supporting MK. To be more specific, the “button mashing” I am referring to pertains mostly to the Xmen/Marvel games, and is less of a factor in all the other SF games. You’ve got to see where I’m coming from, right?

MK2 tournaments from what ive seen is nothing but spamming fireballs, its not even fun to watch or play. MK Trilogy is nothing but BS brain dead infinite combos, Noob Sabiot and boss characters.

I still play MK2 occasionally with a friend of mine. There’s not much else in the series that still holds my interest.

Actually, yeah, the inclusion of a block button in a 2D fighter at the time made MK feel different from SF.

Actually, the whole entire game felt different from SF. Why am I here, again?

I gotta find another thread to post in.

faggot^

lmao^

^^^ barrage of insults I was referring to ^^^^

Is that all the input you have to offer?

eh…it’s likely the same reason when some 2-D players couldn’t make the switch to 3-D when those games first started to drop. they either didn’t like (ie: unfamiliar territory, etc) and/or simply couldn’t play it. it’s an old story.

I personally think that the announcement of a MK vs Sf game would make the fighting game renaissance of the past two years complete. Oh and with the announcement of a KI3,. i am surprised there was never a KI vs Sf since the KI games toned down the gore.

What i liked about the MK games was that they invested in the characters and they all had personality. MK and SF had truly excellent presentation for their time and maybe even gameplay although the MK games don’t hold up. I played MK1 and it felt too slow but i had a blast on MK2 and 4 back in the day. For all of the hate the MK games get, they contributed greatly to popculture and fighting games. With the get over here, awesome movie, fatalities, toasties, finishing moves and knocking someone through stages, the MK games contributed greatly to popculture and a little to other fighting games. I am not sure what the point of this post was but i just wanna talk about how awesome the MK games were as a kid. I still hold out on hope that a MK VS Sf game that played like A2 would be made. A mk game developed by Capcom would be awesome.

lol bitch. You know statement and comment are synonyms right. Please play in traffic becausenobody cares about you.

In any case I think that most Capcom games were great by accident(heh combos were never meant to happen technically a glitch lol), but Im with most people as far as believing mortal kombat was poorly designed with violence as its only gimmick. Its fun casually but I hate playing this as a competitive game. Deception would probably fit on my list as one of the best simply because of the ability to interrupt a combo(combo breaker I believe) to keep your ass from losing eating a 40-50% damage combo.

yeah, but you only had three breakers in one match. so it’s a lose lose situation with the whole breaker shit. i know MKA had some type of parry shit, but only done with certain moves muc like tekkn 4

Breakers are only useful when you are this much away from dying and a connected combo can potentially kill you off. Breakers aren’t meant for you to pull off anytime you get caught in one.
I never figured this out until I played some people who spammed out the breakers until they had none left, and the match had just started.

Kinda funny, yeah.

MKII was the first game I remember playing in the series. I was a kid back then, so I really got into the blood and gore gimmick. I was trash at the game, but I enjoyed it. UMK3 looks like the best in the series, but I never really played it much. I just saw many others come into the arcade and play and enjoy it.

After UMK3, I had no more interest in the series. Didn’t like MKIV (except that pit fatality at the game over screen. That was cool. Scared the hell out of my when I was younger), and the rest of the series looked like crap IMO.

Just to clarify, my brother was REALLY popular and well-liked. (That’s why everyone hates Mortal Kombat.)

not every one hates mk. i dont know what you are talking about.

I grew up on the old school MKs (from 1 to 4). I enjoyed it much more than Street Fighter as a kid. I used to go to arcades and play MK even though I had no idea on how to do special moves. It felt like a user friendly game to me so it stuck with me for a while. Then the shit went 3D (Deadly Alliance). It felt like a really bad version of Tekken so I stopped playing. I still love MKs 1-4 to this day. I still play UMK3 on Xbox Live and MK2 on PSN every once in a while. It’s what I grew up on.

The MK scene also suffers from places like the Midway Forums, MKO.com & MKU.com (aka MKO Pt 2) who continue to suck the lifeforce from the community, not to mention the morons who run those places.

Good places like UMK.com (forums are currently closed, but the site is still has a wealth of info, and the forums are still viewable.), ClassicMK.com (where most of the UMK.com guys went after the forums were closed @ UMK.com), and now, the newest entry into the true drama less, High level side of MK, MortalKombatEmpires.com.

The community itself is a huge part of the blame for why MK is so looked down upon, when in fact, there IS 2-3 really good MKs, not to mention UMK3 i still think, is an EVO worthy fighter, because yes, at a HIGH LEVEL, its IS THAT good!!!

I get it, I understand the MK hate, but to say its ALL MK’s suck its just idiotic and makes whoever says that look like a retard.

I brought UMK3 to SB4 to show people that UMK3 is worthy (thanks to Stream guys for dissing it yet tell us how great SFIV is, gtfo) for the attention. Guess what? UMk3 will be back at SB4 next year, and it will be a huge spectical.

So if you havent played UMK3, play it, so PM me or EWAShock about it. Its a great game that shouldnt die. Just because Ed Boon wants to make SC/Tekken MK games, doesnt mean we’re gonna let UMK3 fall to the wayside.

Get on the old NEW crack, UMK3!!!

MK2 for life.

Meh I like UMK3, but then again there are PLENTY of braindead 50-100% damage combos in this game and I hate this. Fun casually but not competitvely, its like “something gets blocked, smoke easy juggle combo for 80 percent damage, and where’s my fight money!!”

Mortal Kombat is great for fatalities and characters(not the pallet swaps). I also liked the main story of Mortal Kombat when Tobias was still working at Midway. I have always gone back and fourth with SF/MK growing up. Now I know SF is alot more complex then MK, and just a greater game. I can’t hate on MK because it’s part of my childhood.
