Why does everyone hate the mortal kombat series?

MK - Shit.

MKII- Shit.

MKIII- Huge leap in the right direction, but not enough experience on the developement and design teams to get it down.

Everything after that was a failure.

Glad to see some MKDA love here. And yes, that game WASNT broken.

It needs a big overhaul. I never hated MK. I like it a lot but it seems to be the same game every time a new one comes out. I think it needs to go back to 2D. Make it look like KOF12 with lots of blood. People who say its sucks say that because they suck at it and cant pull of any moves. Trust me, I have heard this a million times since MK came out. I remember being in arcades and killing people in Mk and every time they would say this sucks, I cant pull off any moves, They would say SF is better and easy to play. Thats BULL!!! Back when the MK vs SF rival was going on in the early 90’s i would play MK over SF any day of the week.

MK was one of the few US produced fighting games, right? Was there ever a big scene outside the US? I know MK2/UMK3 got lots of love here in Cape Town when it came out, but there were only a couple of UMK3 cabs in the city so it never grew to SF, or even KOF status.

Who cares if it wasent big outside the US. This is America! Who gives a F*** about outside the US. People act like better players live outside the US when it comes to fighting games. Bunch of hype if you ask me.

Because you’re posting on a Street Fighter forum.

Dude. This if the fighting game thread. Not the SF thread. Keep in mind, MK was hugh back in the day and SF is big once again thanks to SF4 seeing how many people didnt like 3rd strike and it kind of died off the hype of SF which IMO 3rd strike is the best SF game ever.

You don’t realize how stupid you just sounded.

Right on the head man, right on the head.

Well firstly, you’re a fucking moron. Secondly, you’re a fucking moron. And thirdly, I don’t know anything about the MK scene, other than UMK3 seems fairly popular (in a niche way) in the US. And that is exactly why I’m asking what the MK scene is like outside the US.

I always hated this system of blocking using a button

The first two MKs were quite popular when they came out in Australia. While there was all the violence/blood contoversy shown on the TV, MK was probably even a little more popular in arcades than SF. It was already starting to die off by the time MK3 was released (although UMK3 and Trilogy still sold quite well on Playstation), SF was definately more popular at this point. The 3D MKs pretty much killed the franchise here, to the point were you could get MKvsDC for half its release price after less than a month. Now days you see the occasional MK cabinet around, probably a 1 to 5 ratio when compared to SF/Vs Series cabs.

MK was never popular in Singapore. They have VERY strict censorship laws, the only way to play MK in the early days was to get pirate copies of the console releases. Even after MK was allowed into the country, almost no one played it (and pretty much only once if they did, to see what the fuss was about). Singapore still has quite a strong arcade scene, in recent years I’ve probably been to 10 to 15 arcades there. They have quite a range of popular (SF series, Vs Series, GG, BB, etc) and some more obscure/old (Rumble Fish, Fifa, Metal Slug, Bishi Bashi, etc) machines, but I have NEVER seen an MK cab.

I personally hated the MK series for its art style,VA & music. And the way characters jumped was too restricted for me. I also didn’t like the combo system at all, was just kinda weird. Yet for some reason I found Killer Instinct more appealing. Most people in my area jumped to MK when it came out but I stuck with SF.

I like Mortal Kombat honestly, I bought the latest one and didnt have any big problems with it besides the fact it was rated T and was ten years too late compared to MVC2. And of course like all Mortal Kombat games, they are basically impossible to play online lol.

MKII and UMK3 were really good I thought. Definatly not as good as SF though. When I was a child I always thought it would be cool to make a SF vs MK but it will probably never happen. I did hear Ed Boon, the co-creator of MK, say that at one point Midway and Capcom talked about a vs game in the late 90s but they argued too much over who would make the game, the rating, and several other things. The main reason why the game was never made, and why a vs game took so long for an MK game, is the fatality. Nobody wants their characters to be killed in a gory fashion, and that is why MKvsDC was rated T.

Now then, MK9 is being made, Midway went bankrupt, the MK rights were bought by Warner Brothers, which is hilarious because WB also owns DC characters and helped make MKvsDC, but this new MK9 is going to be rated M, and is so gory and crazy, that Ed Boon has said that he fears that it might be rated AO…I look forward to it!

The only recent MK game that I really like is MKvsDC. It’s the first MK game to feature a real wake up game, 2 in 1’s and throw escapes. I’ve waited years to be able to buffer special moves off of normals in an MK game. Everything in MKvsDC flows smoother than any MK game before it.

Is the game perfect? No. Is it fun? Yes. The online component for the game is a joke due to the move property changes and what not, but offline, the game is fairly decent. I like the pro-move system of this game. It’s basically the MK version of what would be EX moves in 3rd Strike. I did like UMK3 and MKII but so far MKvsDC is my favorite MK as far as gameplay is concerned.

What I do not like about it are the Flash and Superman infinites. How these glaring flaws made it passed Q.A. is beyond me. The Superman infinite was found even before the official release date! Many fighting games have flaws like this but these two can be done by old grannies in retirement homes after having had a debilitating stroke. Lame.

Like many other fighting games, characters and/or infinites get bannned in competitive play. This is true with some of the tight nit MK communities. Since this is mainly an online competitive game, there is no way to keep the Superman and Flash infinite spammers in check. Had this game been offline and had a decent scene, things would be more positive as far as impressions go.

I’m sure many here will disagree with me and that’s fine. No matter what, I stand by my opinion of this latest MK game.

Peace.

Your the fucking moron when your making a comment about MK when you know nothing about it. You dont see me making comments about SF4 when i dont play that GOD awful crapfest of a video game. Check all my posts, I always chat in the OTHER fighting games forum because SF4 ruined the SF franchise for me. Please capcom, Bring back Darkstalkers and save all of us DS fans.

UMK3 is all the matters, MK2 sucks nothing but spamming fireballs.

True, If your a scrub who keeps backing a fighter into the corner and keep on doing a low kick sweep. LMAO! I use to hate players like that but when i would do a combo on a player he would claim im “CHEATING” whatever that means. MK Trilogy is my all time favorite.

you just sounded like a stupid redneck with that post, lol

How? Because i love my country? Or because everyone hypes up the japs of being the best in the world. Thats bullshit.
