Why fighting games arent mainstream like shooters?
The same reason good underground rap music isnt respected like wack mainstream music(club bangers, southern snap crap, garbage lyricism).
Its all about following a trend, and what makes more money. it pisses me off to see MLG tourneys and all that playing counterstrike instead of 3rd Strike. Its boring to watch shooters cus its like the same thing- Aim, shoot, kill, grenades. It takes more skill and practice to be a good fighting gamer than a good shooting gamer. Theres also more new shooters out than fighters, so naturally, its all about keeping up with times and money, and what the mainstream wants. Fighting games is more of an underground genre now, which isnt respected as much as shooters, just like good rap music(Nas,common,Jedi mind tricks, etc.) isnt as respected or mainstream as wack rap music (plies, souljaboy, lil wayne, etc.)
I pray street fighter IV and others puts Fighting games back in their rightful place, ON TOP!!!
No disrespect to shooters, i love my shooters, But im a fighter. Why shoot an M16 when I can shoot a HADOUKEN.
I think you guys hit a good point with the team aspect of shooters, and how it gives people wasy opportunities to avoid giving respect to better players.
I had a group of friends in high school who played RPGs heavily and shooters on the side. I tried to get them into fighters and Smash was what they compromized on.
One guy got into it, but got emotionaly flustered at all losses. Another was seriously offended because I threw too often so he quit.
Fighters are a very personal 1v1 experience that most young people fear. If someone beats you, there’s no excuses which is the best part if you’re on the winning side.
I was speaking with friend(who is a member here) and he brought up how excited he was for street fighter IV and he would tell his class (he’s a grade school teacher) about his memories with the game, going to the arcade, etc. His students weren’t interested. I think one of the responses his students gave answers this question
One student said
’it takes too long to get good at street fighter’
It is a matter of patience and willing/wanting to get good, not to down fps but they are more twitch gaming and less mind games. You can pick one strat and run it not really deviate from it too much, fighting games you have to worry about a lot more, (screen, bar, mode, etc) Plus there’s always the random move threat.
Games like brawl I don’t know I can really consider that a fighting game.It is popular because of the pick up and playability of it and yes it is combat but something about it seems off.I never really played the first few but i’m able to snake dash and do other crazy stuff. Also i’m able to beat people who have played the game longer than I have. That shouldn’t happen, even if you have the most rudimentary fighting game knowledge.
I think it is also very hard to market fighters here in America because American gaming scene is different from the Japanese one. The games that get the bigger budgets and big production value here are the FPS’es and the action games. Constant stimulation beats build up tension in this market. if you’ve ever been a match with a good player and there comes that brief instant where you both are crouching staring at each other you know what i mean. Horror games like resident evil moved from puzzle solving and some action to balls to the wall action that it is in 4 and 5 (Leon Kennedy back flipped through lazers in 4)
also fighting games are imported while most of the mainstream games are homegrown except for Brawl.
It would be amazing to have most of gaming given the same respect here that they give fps, some rts and I guess WoW.
And guitar hero is the dumb’d down version of Guitar Freaks and (now because of world tour) Drummania
can we just delete this whole page its really horrible
Generally speaking, to become good at fighters you have to do alot of outside reseach. The majority of players don’t just play 24/7 and discover new tech. They read frame data, combo’s, traps, wake-up options, priorities, match-ups…
In a shooter, while the top players do research best movement routes, projectile speed, hiding/sniping spots… the majority of players can in fact just play with little or no outside reseach. They will eventually learn the maps, weapon placements, spawn points, sniping angles- all from just playing
Shooters require no time outside of the game to become decent. while to become decent at a fighter not only requires you to spend time on the game, but also reading what other players have discovered. This extra involvement is not what alot of people want. They are gamers for as long as the game is on. once they are no longer playing, they are back to being whatever the hell they were before the game was turned on.
Still goes in my book as one of the most underrated games of all time and possibly the greatest team-oriented shooter. Mid-air flag passes are still some of the most intense, awe-inspiring things I’ve ever seen in gaming.

This is the primary component here. It’s not so much that fighters are “harder”, but the fact that, compared to other genres, the time it takes to get good in a fighter is much longer. Not that other genres don’t require skill or are shallow by design, but relatively, the time it takes to get to high levels in a fighter (granted, some take longer than others) for a completely new player is much, much longer. And from a new player perspective, it’s simply not worth the time and effort to learn to get good at a fighter, when they can jump in a FPS and start (again, relatively) kicking ass early on.
There are other factors, like more players being able to play simultaneously in FPS, but those are incidental. It’s really a “time/effort:reward” ratio thing. I don’t see it as Western players being lazy per se, but rather that genres that offer more instantaeous levels of gratification are easier to get into.
BTW, all folks who claim “SSB is not a fighter” are all wrong.
Um…not really. Especially not compared to the numbers SF2 originally did in the early 90’s in its prime.
250k in this day and age in the US VG market is quite decent. Nowhere NEAR “huge”, though.
You are my new favorite SRK poster.
For a DLC game it is pretty huge actually :I
To the message I got saying I should give SSB a chance. i have. I see why people enjoy it. The game playing state of mind I had when I was 19, I would have loved it. Right now with what I look to get from games I can tell you it just does not offer me enough.
I think you people are giving the difficulty of fighting games way too much credit. I know its your shit, but c’mon. I have also been playing SF since 92, and have been good since 93.
Alot of you haven’t even played shooters, and probably didnt get new systems until they had some Capcom games. Everyone I know thats into fighters have a closed mind about ANY other genre. But I have moved on; with all the systems, there is NO way I can give half a damn about this shit when all this new eyecandy is out.
And now that I think about it; there is alot of elitism,(look at this page) the games are old already said this) and after seeing the hype of Street Fighter IV, and everyone being all amazed by the graphics, you guys have some LOW ass standards. Graphics whores will not be impressed, being able to see joints on characters, and looking at the funky movements (WTF Bison has the SF-EX walk) makes me cringe, so I KNOW a casual gamer would throw up at SFIV.
Shooters from 2 years back look better than todays fighters.
You guys think its just because a noob will get owned, I guarantee thats not the case. Yeah,. they’ll get owned, but I imagine someone used to playing the more popular genres is alo used to a whole lot of shit going on, when you play a usual fighter, all you see is (usually) 2 characters running around a static, or near-dead background, and the graphics usually suck. Thats not going to hold someones interest. There’s a reason non-fighting people picked up DOA and Soulcalibur. Pretty enough to catch the eye of the casual.
Basically, I sum this thread up as jealousy.
I have no hang-ups. My favorite game is REAL Super Turbo (FUCK Sirlin and HD Remix) but I’m also real. With all this other eye-candy, and games that play GOOD online, just about every genre has eclipsed fighters overall. I know I didn’t buy all 3 systems just to play some damn fighters.
You need better mutual acquaintances.
i dunno…theres a lot of closed-minded ppl these days
if this topic was discussed on an fps board
u’d see the exact same kind of closed-mindedness, but jus the other way around, dissing fighters
and i partially agree wit em
sf4’s graphics looks pretty dam amazing for a fighter
but only looks pretty average, perhaps even sub-par for a “next-gen” game
Well, the majority of Fighter fans are less likely to be swayed by pretty graphics than the majority of FPS fans. In a fighter, the mechanics and gameplay stand out more and are more telling.
There is a lot of silly elitism in this thread. Pfft, in SRK in general. But I wouldn’t call it jealousy. It’s a pack thing.
Any group tends to be elitist of its own. It is perfectly normal.
When Fighting games were big, graphics and flash were a big seller. Alot of really bad games sold well because they stood out graphically. As they faded and the market became more of a niche, it became harder to market a fighter on looks alone and games which are old and dated are still marketable. You can expect the same for shooters when they run their course and some new genre overtakes them. The ones with the best mechanics will have their followings and the ones that got by mostly on looks will fade away into dust.
A truly good game doesn’t need to look amazing, just memorable. Memorable graphics and solid gameplay means longevity, amazing graphics with poor gameplay and forgetable designs means a quick buck and into oblivian. You can still find Pac Man machines in most arcades for a reason.
Wrong.
Keep the generalizations to yourself, son.
I’ve never understood why people care about graphics so much. All thats ever mattered to me is the gameplay(in ANY genre,FPS,RPGs, fighters, etc)…I guess I’m in the minority
