FPSs do require an astounding amount of dedication and an acute comprehension of game theory. So the point about FGs being more complicated than FPSs is kinda moot, atleast on the highest level of competitive play. The answer for FPSs being so dominate in main stream culture is much more complicated. A combination of online play, industry capitalizing on a trend, and sociologically the whole of American culture has an underlying current of violence that has attracted a generation to FPSs. I dont think FGs will ever be accepted in the mainstream like they were because of the progression of our culture. Fighting Games dwell in a realm of intellect that FPSs will never venture near, i think the players that play FGs love to think and analyze (not that Counter-strike players analyzing maps, and revising tactics don’t). FGs are so complicated at a high level!! Its kinda impossible for a casual fan or spectator to understand the intricate game theory at first(i.e mind games, the match-ups, the shenanigans). Although the niche that Fighting Games inhabit can be expanded maybe, with, if i may suggest, a team format for tournies and of course with the advent of all the new FGs this year that should bring in new fans. And most importantly with the death of the arcade scene, atleast outside of Cali, online gaming for Fighters should really help restore some the former glory to the scene. I hope though that FGs break into mainstream though… All this is coming from a Halo 2, Rainbow Six player…
IaMP is different, but not hard to figure out in a timely manner control-wise. If anything, I struggled more with the confirm button magically changing as I progressed options in the select screen than anything that went on in-game.
Oh god yes, I would love a new Power Stone for the PS3. a new Darkstalkers would be amazing as well. I loved how DS was the “testing” platform for SF for many years. Many of the features that became staples in the newer SF games started in DS because they didn’t want to “taint” the purity of the SF franchise.
yesh, they offer the same things, but not as good as fps games do
which was all svenghali said…that fps games do it better
and this is fact, not opinion
fighting games jus have dialogue and pre-rendered cutscenes
fps games actually “immerse”, as svenghali said, u into the story
and unless ur playin like the adventure mode of the 3d mortal kombats
u dun have free roaming and exploration like u do in fps games
its really not a limitation of the genre
its jus the game devs of fighters either dun have the budget or really jus dun care to bother to do these things as good as fps devs too
the fact that there arent many fighters bein developed at all isnt a good thing for fighters
and also that those fighters that r being developed arent done so wit such a high finesse for “extras”
(mostly u’d find the big budget fighters in titles like doa or soul calibur do it well)
Part of the reason belongs to the developers. Fighting games now aren’t marketed very well to the public eye. Most compannies who produce great fighters usually have poor advertising experience, because of this some games hardly get noticed outside of the hardcore base.
its less work to use a gun than to fight with your hands (generally speaking - not necessarily true in certain situations). same applies to games - close range combat requires more thinking, mind reading, and a higher level of intimacy with the opponent.
but thats probably a very minor reason. a lot of leet-speak and internet culture which is so popular with youth these days originated from early FPS days. fighting games never really made the jump onto the internet train, and have been left behind in the early 90s.
I’ve never had any problems with execution or using common sense, even as a kid. Granted I’m no Daigo, but as far as SF2 goes, namely ST, I’m ok. 3S is my real game.
That shit doesnt make you good. People can have less than 3 years of experience and be good. 20 years, Pfft. Wait 20 years? GODDAMN!? I’ve been playing fighters since I was 3, But thats only 17 years Didnt get good till I got a snes and sf2 on it about 2 years later, And was mopping people up in KI a year or 2 later.
So… with SF4 coming out and the opportunity to get more people into the scene, can we make up fliers with SRK’s address, and add contact info for a local player, and post them at our local gamestop or something? Will this do us any good?
Did I say anything about overall skill, I was referring to the lasrge variety of different games I have seen and that it was very unlikely that any new game could really be unique enough that I couldn’t at least figure out the basics is a few minutes.
Truth be told it is only relatively recent that i have got any good at Fighting games. Yes, i would always cream my friends pretty decisively…but overall I spent many years as a scrub. I understand all the mistakes most scrubs make over and over and get stuck with because i was there. In my area throws were cheap and you always gave second round out of respect. I learned alot of bad habits and attitudes. Then before I could learn any better I moved away from the big city and lost access to any real competition.
While I have been playing for 20 years (actually more if you count the fact i played Karate Champ when it was first released in the arcade), i only really would concider myself as decent within the last few years…with most of my real breakthroughs in the last six months since I found GGPO.
I think if you can be good at street fighter, Then go and whoop on someone in primal rage you were considered good. Back then this wasnt uncommon. I think skill comes either naturally, Or it depends on how much you put into said game/games. I have dropped all things capcom honestly, Unless its sf4 I strictly stick to SNK or tekken 6. I wish the fighting game state was big like it used to be, I mean its still somewhat big in certain areas, But back then it was huge Almost every spot had a street fighter cab lol.
ya but the fighting game craze died along with the arcade scene. Thank you xbox live. I can no long physicaly shake the hand of the person i just defeated
How is this XBL’s fault? They saved community gaming when Arcades failed for reasons unrelated to M$.
And LOL at the consistent argument that fighting games require certain skills and FPS games are casual fodder. High level shooter gameplay employs a lot of skills that go beyond “point and click”. If someone were to come in and say “fighters are little more than hitting the other guy before he hits you” this place would be livid.
I wouldn’t call it elitism, but there’s a definite lack of respect for the other genre going on in this thread. As an avid fan of both shooters and fighters - I just needed to point that out.
Learning curve.
A casual gamer can get into a shooter and score a couple of lucky kills (due to the way multiplayer shooters are designed), his K/D ratio might suck but that is not going to stop him from having some fun (by getting some kills). Whereas for FGs… its much harder for a casual player to beat a good player, in fact, I’d say its nearly impossible if the skill gap is large enough. Getting raped 100-1 isn’t likely to be fun for anyone, so the causal gamer is going to want to shun FGs for obvious reasons.
Multiplayer.
Shooters can accomodate more players in multiplayer games, and more players = more “fun” for most gamers.
Level playing field.
Unlike FGs, there are no stupid tiers for gamers to grapple with in shooters, some people will argue that “yea but you can use the same char as your opponent”… but diversity is what makes FGs interesting, I don’t think SF will be too interesting if there was only Ryu and Ken.
