Why do people like Tyler Perry films?

I’m pretty sure Tyler Perry gets funding because his movies are light hearted and pretty easy to digest. You want a movie with complex and heavy subject matter, I doubt you’ll get a lot of funding. And the fact of the matter is, Spike Lee is controversial. That’s the drawback if you choose to be controversial. Tyler Perry isn’t controversial, he makes light hearted movies that entire families can enjoy. So why wouldn’t studios fund his movies? That just makes sense.

I’m sure a heavy movie about the drug trade isn’t going to get the funding that some silly children movie is going to get. I mean a movie you can take your family to see is going to get more money than a movie that only 18-35 year old may see.

And no I don’t like Tyler Perry, but people can’t deny why his movies appeal to people.

Tyler Perry movies are successful for the same reasons why shit like WSHH is successful. I’ll let you draw your own conclusions.

The Madea plays actually WERE funny.

People’s gripe is that Tyler Perry plays towards the close minded strong-willed christian blacks, but they made him a millionaire.

Also, its pretty obvious that he’s a closeted homosexual, which can amplify anyone who already doesnt like him in the first place. He’s not coming out, for a LONG time. If he comes out his demographic would turn their back on him.

Hey, now.

Don’t put the onus on us for that shit.

Except Larry the Cable Guy isn’t even 1% as successful as TP is. The lone film Larry put out was a massive flop, whereas Perry’s movies are a license to print money. In recent years, the guy has been more successful than fucking Spielberg.

Anyways, this all reminds me of a quote (paraphrased) from Adam Carolla’s book;

“Why do black people feel the need to “support” Tyler Perry? I don’t tell all my white friends; “Hey, let’s go watch the newest piece of shit Rob Schneider film to support him!””

…but Rob Schneider is da bes

I have watched a few of his movies and for the most part they felt like a waste of time. But I did like some of the. The why did I get married movies and The family that prays. I’m sure that some of you might be able to appreciate those if you can look past the blackness.

The Family that Preys and Daddy’s Little Girls are the only respectable movies he has. And the only reason I like Daddy’s Little Girls is because it features a black man that is NOT a deadbeat dad. Other than those 2, all his other movies are shit

Haven’t watched his tv shows in depth, so I don’t have an opinion on those

Melanin obviously. Find out more about appreciating Tyler Perry and other melanin related super-powers here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melanin_theory

I just read the wiki article of “For Colored Girls”. That movie sounds depressing as hell.

My gfs mother wrote the original poem.

Really? I hope I didn’t offend you or anything. I just watched two scenes from that movie and I’m rather upset right now. However, it looks like a really deep film, so I can’t say it’s bad.

Oh no…it was written in the 70s (from what I remember) so it is bound to be depressing considering the state of male female relations back then.
Here is some information on her

Very powerful presence in real life too. Use to hang out with her after school while in high school since I was friends with her daughter. Her daughter is a genius by the way.

For Colored Girls WOULD have been a good movie, minus Janet Jacksons character.

The “DL black man” that sleeps around and infects his girl with HIV is such an overused theme and talking point in the black community, the rate of HIV infections doesnt correlate to women being the highest growing population of infections due to DL men. Its just a pet peeve of mine being that I am very gay friendly, and this just propagated the idea that all gays have aids and masculine gays are on the DL.

Not to mention Tyler Perry is on the DL.

Meanwhile…

The rest of dem niggas just jelly.

Tonight at a Red Box, a little white girl talking about how funny Maedea was.

My god. It’s jumped species.

That is some good information on her, and yes she does have a very powerful presence. Out of curiosity, what was her daughter’s IQ, going by you saying she’s a genius?

I just wish I didn’t have seen the kids’ death scene and the rape. What was the point of that? I know rape is about control, but I seriously wonder what goes through the head of a rapist. It’s also sad that as a man, I fear of rape, despite my size, but even that wouldn’t save me. However, what got to me the most was when the man dropped his children out of the window, and no one called the cops or anyone. I know the mother wasn’t thinking straight, but I wish she had knocked his ass out or shanked him before he got to the window.

I came here just to unlike…and then re like this post. LOOOOL.

To contribute to the topic, I do like his work. I haven’t seen The Family That Preys or For Colored Girls, though I will say that Madea’s Witness Protection was a bit dragged and slightly dull compared to the other films, but maybe it’s because it centered around the male protagonist instead of Madea. However, it will come off as ignorant and is without an explanation, but maybe it was because compared to his other work, the protagonist was Caucasian while the others were of course, black, and that Perry didn’t know how to handle that. Also, there was the “clash”; an upper-middle class family receiving witness protection in the ghetto, and the uppity, preppy, bratty teenage daughter high off her fucking hormones didn’t help either. If anything, I was expecting some action in this film, and the movie just ended in an odd manner. I didn’t feel much conflict in this one, but I liked it nonetheless.

Problem with this is. I’ll let the late Dwanye Mcduffie explain
