I wouldn’t put OTK up there in CVS2. He’s kind of like CVS2’s version of Clockwork. Made a really nice high tier team work, but can’t compete with the high level metagame. I haven’t heard from OTK in forever, but I’d imagine he still couldn’t compete with the competition in CVS2 these days. Plus there isn’t nothing he does that someone like Daiosuke (the Kyo and Chun player) doesn’t do better.
In terms of Marvel, the top 3 without a shadow of a doubt are
Justin
Yipes
Sanford
This isn’t even up for debate. For YEARS these 3 played at a level that few others could touch. Below them people like Desmond would probably be 4th. I also think names like Finese are highly underrated. When you can dominate the fucking FFA scene for years (no small task), you get a nod in my book. What other hotspot for MVC2 outside of CTF existed but FFA.
Neo is the top of the new blood of MVC2, but the new blood can’t hang with the old. Top 5 Marvel is easily
Justin
Yipes
Sanford
Schmit
Pinkey
I would dare anyone dispute Desmond is outside of top 5. He hangs in there with the best of the best, has handsdown the 2nd best Sentinel in the world, and makes even some of the best MSP players look totally free.
I haven’t followed CVS2 in so long to know the names, but some of the more recent match videos are insane. Wish I knew some of the players names.
3s is pretty easy:
Kuroda
MOV
Ino
RX
Rikiomaru - this guy is WAY underrated
Yeah you’re right on all points, I was mainly just making a list to kick off some discussion the more and more time past after the list the more and more I realised I Duc and Clock shouldn’t be Top 5 and Chari I found myself going am I fucking retarded. Especially with Chari no idea what the fuck I was thinking. I’m sticking with Iyo being up there maybe not No. 2 though, one of the few people who could really go with Bas at an even level back in the day. Uma yeah he’s number one now and probably till the games dies out completely but I don’t think he will be able to reach the level of dominance Bas did, or I’m probably just talking out of my ass Most likely. And I would pay money to see Steve H vs Chari >.>
RX doesn’t fit. Also that list doesn’t have Boss or Nuki and I’m not really SURE about Ino. He’s got that JP god status but I’m not totally sure you couldn’t fit a Matsuken/K.O/Deshiken in there.
That’s because being able to win at high level at both 2d and 3d is the biggest challenge and therefore it’s those players who I have the most respect for. It’s like a tennis player who is able to win majors on both clay and grass (the most different surfaces emphasing different skills). Nukki I think has won major tournaments at VF4FT which is a big achivement over Daigo in the comparison between the 2 especially with that being such a hard and well balanced game that rewards the better player.
No… Not this.
Justin, Yipes, Sanford, and I’m going to give the last spots to Schmidt, Fanatiq, Clock, or Duc. Desmond is top 5 in NYC, easy, even Top 3 (Yipes, Sanford, Desmond)… but that doesn’t mean he fits in the world. I would even argue that Neo’s sentinel is better than his.
CvS2?
Bas, Tokido, Buk, Choi, and Kindevu.
Chari, Ricky, IMO are honorable mentions.
3S??
Boss, Kuroda, Nuki, MOV, Nitto.
Though, Raoh and Kokujin are pretty godlike too.
To add another… this one causes a lot of debate, because there are SO MANY good players…
Super Turbo:
MAO, Nuki, Tsuji, Muteki, and Futachan.
That does NOT include players who are no longer active in it… Komoda… that really fucking good Ryu player… I haven’t seen Pony in a while, but that could be a mistake… Choi? Afro? I wouldn’t know how to rank Sako… I don’t know who else plays still… But the five that I just mentioned were all at SBO2k10
Kinda unrelated but I’ll say the best fighting game match I’ve ever seen was Evo 2008 CvS2 finals Choi vs BAS. Choi played so well it was dumbfounding, beating roll-canceled specials with normals and completely shutting down his opponents. BAS is the best but Choi’s performance was absolutely incredible.
Also any top 5 of 3S without Nuki is incorrect. Riki is the top Chun nowadays but I don’t believe he is better than Nuki. Betting against Nuki is never smart, Tokido sent him to losers at Evo 2008 and I made $20 on a bet with a guy on my right who didn’t believe Nuki would win the whole thing. He also had lots of strong showings/wins at SBO.
Choi’s performance in 2008 CvS2 finals was legendary. 8AM finals, too. That room was hype. I’m glad I was there for that.
Still not top 5 in the world though :-/
And my head is spinning with multiple people putting Chari as Top 5 in CvS2. That’s like saying Dark Prince is Top 5 Marvel all time. Yeah… Chari was good, but he was decidedly middle of the road, when it came to high-level Japanese play. There are literally dozens of players at, or above, his level, including the top American players.
I’m still shocked at NOBODY mentioning Row or Chunk for Top 5 in Marvel, but multiple people mentioning Desmond.
sanford loses faith in cable pretty quickly hell use him and rape and then lose one match and drop him, which is a shame cause i love watching his cable
Sanford’s Sentinel is what you should be scared about. CTF, back in 2k3… Wow, this dude… I double snapped his commando, arped the shit out of his Storm… I had a full life MSP, and he has 80% Sentinel… Dude comes back and smacks me, I get his Sent to 50% or so before he demolishes me… and this was BEFORE unfly existed. Never again was I so locked the fuck down by a solo Sentinel. I hated Sent from that day forth.
